Cover Letter / Letter of Application NEVER send a resume’ without a cover It’s a transmittal letter for your resume’ An introduction to who you are and whyyou are submitting a resume’ Establishes a link of purpose betweenyou and the recipient“A handshakethrough themail”2

Cover Letter Goals It’s your 1st impression.Make it count! Shows how you caneffectivelycommunicate. Should contain theappropriate format,content and tone.3

Cover Letter vs. Resume’A resume’ is a listing of education,experience and qualifications.A cover letter is: A way to highlight, expand upon andcomplement your resume’. A place to add tidbits of info that youwouldn’t normally add in the resume’.Don’t regurgitate your resume’!4

Cover Letter vs. Email CoverSending a cover letter via email is tricky. The cover can be an attached fileOR The cover can be the body of the email Don’t do both! That would be a bitrepetitive and a disappointment whenthe reader opens the attached file.5

Email Cover It gives you the opportunity to make astrong, memorable first impression themillisecond that reviewer’s eyes openyour email. A chance to draw reader in with anincredible opening line. Feels just a bit less formal.6

Cover Letter Length Most normally an effective cover lettercan be crafted to be one page long.– Easier to read and assimilate your story– Shows you can communicate succinctly However, if your situation requiresmore explanation, a longer letter isacceptable provided it’s not redundantand too detailed.8

AddresseeTo whom should the letter beaddressed? Best to address an individual– Dear Mr. Smith, Dear Ms. Jones Generic corporate position– Dear Hiring Manger Generic salutation– To whom it may concern Address no one– May be best to skip anysalutation and jump right intothe letter if you haveabsolutely no clue who will bereading your letter.9

Cover Letter Goals Express your intent, interest, andenthusiasm in position– to connect yourself with the job– to connect with the recipient– to demonstrate you’ve done your “homework” Demonstrate your personality and writingability– to impress with your style and clarity Complement and emphasize highlights ofyour resumé– to “flesh out” the resumé as it relates to the job10

StrategiesFit the Argument to the Context1. If you’re well qualified for the job,convince with your experiencee.g.: “ My record as an engineer at ABCmanufacturing is excellent, and I amexcited at the possibility of contributingto the success of your company.”12

StrategiesFit the Argument to the Context2. If your general background fits, but the jobdescription doesn’t really,convince with related skillse.g.: “The education and experience I’vegained as an engineering technologystudent have prepared me for the co-opposition.”13

Structure Opening Paragraph– State which position you are applying for,and how you found out about theorganization and/or position– Express what is attracting you to work forthis organization and in this position– Arouse the reader’s interest in readingmore about your qualifications16

Structure Middle Paragraph(s)– Give detailed information about how yourqualifications fit with the position’sresponsibilities– Use key words from the job description to makethe connection between the employer’s needsand your skills– Include information about academics, jobexperience, and/or personal attributes relevantto the position17

Structure Closing Paragraph––––Summarize your qualificationsRefer the reader to your enclosed resumeMention your interest in an interviewState when and how you will contact themNote: Follow up exactly when you sayyou will follow up!18

Common Errors Don’t overuse “I” – try me/my or“burying” the I in mid-sentencee.g., “When working in the engineeringdepartment, I accomplished .” Negative commentsVague form lettersTypos!19

Summary Good cover letters have the followingqualities:– formatted as a professional business letter– well written with no grammatical or spellingerrors– written to a specific company or organization fora specific position – NO MASS MAILINGS– contains detail that makes the reader want toread your resume more closely and interview you20

Thank You Notes: Why? Showing your appreciation is theproper thing to do. Allows you to reiterate a summary ofyour qualifications. Confirms your interest in the position.25

Thank You Notes Can be formal letter, email or handwritten note. Follow up within 24 hours Send a thank you to each person whointerviewed you.26

Email or Letter or Note Letters are very formal but can take awhile to process and deliver. Emails are a quick response but canseem a bit impersonal. Hand-written notes can seem verygenuine and personal, but can againhave a long delivery delay.27

Thank You Don’ts Don’t stalk your interviewers. One thank youand a follow-up one week later is enough! Don’t send anything that makes you lookbad. Social media pages, odd pictures, etc. Don’t carry too casual of a tone. Don’t go too long. Stay short & to the point. Don’t plead and re-sell. Just reaffirm. Don’t forget to spell and grammar check!30
