We are happy you agreed to interview for a new career opportunity with General Motors, and are interested in helping lead the changethat will make our world better, safer and more equitable for all.Whether you are a current employee or new to General Motors, this toolkit provides helpful information to use when preparing foryour interview. The Interview ProcessBEFORE If your interview is in-person,someone from the GM team willmeet you when you arrive atGeneral Motors to help escort youto the first interview and answerany questions you may have. If interviewing virtually, test yourinternet connection beforehandand log in early to ensureeverything is working properly. Each interview is typicallyscheduled for 2 HOURS, but mayrun shorter or longer. Be sure toask ALL of your questions beforethe interview is concluded.DURING Interview questions ARE BASEDON GLOBAL COMPETENCIESvalidated for each position. The interview is structuredaround behavioral questions thatdetermine how you regularlyAPPLY YOUR TECHNICAL ANDLEADERSHIP skills to situationsand tasks. EX: “Tell me about a time whenthe actions you took wereresisted or blocked and how youmanaged the situation.” Use the STAR format.AFTER THANK YOU for your time! After your interviews, if youhave further questions, besure to ASK YOURRECRUITER. Your recruiterwill contact you once a hiringdecision has been made.

The STAR Interview StructureSITUATION or TASKACTION You TookBriefly describe a specificSITUATION when you wereresponsible for completing adefined TASK. Do not generalizethe description. Provide theinterviewer enough detail tocreate the context for thesituation or event. You can use anexample from your current job, aprevious job, a volunteerexperience, or any relevantsituation.Talk about the key ACTION youtook and be sure to keep thefocus on you. Even if you arediscussing a group project oreffort, describe what you did – notthe efforts of the team. How didyou approach the situation ortask? What did you do to solve it?Give specific action steps.Explain your thought process.Why did you select a certainapproach? Be sure to explain yourrationale and any alternatives youconsidered.RESULTS You AchievedA strong interview alwaysconcludes with yourRESULTS.
