INTRODUCTIONCentral WheelComponents 120 Not Out!Central Wheel Components (CWC) are celebrating5 generations of the same family owning and runningthe Company over the past 3 Centuries. The fifthgeneration having joined the company in April 2016.CWC may not have invented the wheel, but we have builtand restored it many times since its inception. In fact, since we started in 1897, we’ve built motorcyclewheels for every motorcycle - from Adler to Zundapp, withbikes named with every letter of the alphabet in-between.We currently produce all the spokes for Norton Motorcyclesand we rebuild all the spoked wheels for The NationalMotorcycle Museum and Sammy Miller Museum. Bothmuseums use CWC because of their requirement for thehighest quality workmanship.Until 2007, when they relocated their cruiser factory toThailand, we supplied Triumph Motorcycles with upto athousand spoked wheels a week. With 120 years of trading under our belt, we have amasseda vast amount of knowledge and expertise and consider nojob too small or too specialised for our skilled workforce. We scour the World for the very best Rims to offer bothvalue and quality to our customers, the current selectionare shown within this catalogue. Whether you require a newrim, a blast and polish for your old hub, a set of spokes andnipples, or even a complete wheel rebuild, CWC is here tohelp. We can also supply and fit tyres and tubes, suppliedby our sister company Wheelhouse Tyres.(see ACOTTONDKWDOUGLASDUCATIEXPRESSFRANCIS BARNETTGILERAHARLEY SKAWASAKIKTMLAVERDAMAICOMARSMOTO GUZZIMOTO MORINIMOTOBIMV ERYAMAHAZUNDAPP3

In the UK, salesare becoming more retail orientated asolder wheel builders find it increasinglydifficult to pass on their skills to the youngergeneration. The following pages detail our classicwheel building capability, showing the manydifferent types of rims, spokes, nipples andtyres we supply. All can be built by yourselfor CWC or your own wheel builder onto youroriginal hubs.4Please keep this brochure in a safe placeand use it for future reference on any aspectof classic wheel building, from spoke gaugesand rim sizes through to tyre fitment details. We suggest you photocopy the order form(leaving the original to be reused), and eitherfax or post it back to us with sample spokesand/or hubs, or scan and email it to us atinfo@central-wheel.co.ukThere is a 50% Discount Voucher forThe National Motorcycle Museumat the rear of this brochure.

INTRODUCTIONAccurate InformationYour order is important to us and to enable us to getthings right first time, we need you to supply us withas much accurate information as possible. The biggestproblem our sales team has to deal with is inaccurateinformation, often due to the many changes that haveoccurred during the lifetime of your motorcycle. For example, motorcycles from the 1960’s are nowover 50 years old and have seen great changes, anda machine from the early 1920’s will potentially havealso seen many changes! Original equipment hubs, rims and spokes may well have been replaced, and youcannot assume that the OEM’s spoke dimensions inthe original workshop manual will fit your wheel today. Please remember that CWC supply replacementparts not replicas!Enquiry Form ChecklistWhether you are an enthusiastic amateur orprofessional motorcycle restorer, we require full, accurate details so as not to waste our time or yourmoney. It is important you supply us with the followinginformation when you prepare your order:1. Make, Model and Year of motorcycle manufacture.2. What are you trying to achieve? eg. Are you lookingfor the cheapest option to get your bike up andrunning, or restoring your bike to ‘Concours’ status?3. Type and Size of Rim you require.(Diameter, Width & Number of holes)4. Type and Dimensions of Spokes and Nipplesyou require. (A, B, G, L & Nipple Diameter) -see illustration on page 16.5. F ull Name, Address, Delivery Address (if different),Contact Phone Number/s and Email Address.5

RIM ORDERINGUseful TipsWe can supply anything from a singlewheel rim or set of spokes rightthrough to a complete wheel assembly, built in-house by our specialistwheelbuilders. Whichever you require, please remember we can work betterfrom a sample than a poor sketch withinaccurate measurements. You mayfind it helpful to look at our websitewww.central-wheel.co.uk toascertain the type and size of rims andspokes you require. Please note, we supply replacementrims not replicas. Some may differin dimple pattern or drilling to theoriginal equipment parts, but will fitthe hub specified.6Rim DetailsWhen ordering, please confirm thefollowing details: Width and diameter of rim and number ofspokes, eg. 19” x 1.85” x 40 hole. Type of rim: chrome-plated, powdercoated steel, stainless steel, or alloy. Most rims will be dimpled and drilled(depending on the type of hub), and wheelswill usually have 36 or 40 spokes, althoughdon’t be surprised to find 28 or 32 holes ina rim, plus one for the valve hole and oneor two for the security bolts (which werefitted in bygone days to the rim to stop tyreslippage). Every hub requires the holes in the rim tobe set at a unique angle, so it’s essentialyou supply the correct dimensions D1, D2,W1 and O1 when ordering replacementrims. (See diagram opposite). If a complete rebuild is required, your old hub will need to be supplied. (Bearingsremoved). When ordering new rims, if possible statethe type of hub the wheel currently haseg. Full width, conical, disc brake, QD, cotton reel or single sided. Also the typeand model of bike and year of manufacture.

RIM ORDERINGHub DetailsWe receive hubs in all types of condition, from ancient to new, and of every size andtype imaginable. Our in-house powdercoating and blasting facilities enableus to restore an ancient hub to superbvisual condition, but we cannot be heldresponsible for the hub’s integrity when it isre-tensioned using a new rim and spoke set.Single Sided HubD1The two hub sketches show a single-sidedhub and a full width hub, with dimensionsD1, D2 and W1; along with a sketch (below)of a sectioned wheel rim, showing the O1hub offset dimension.D2W1Hub OffsetFull Width HubO1D1D2W17

SPOKES & NIPPLESSpoke DetailsSpoke material: Galvanised (high carbonsteel), bright steel (for painting), stainless steelor bulldog (high tensile stainless).Spoke dimension: Length, gauge of wire, angle of bend, length of bend. Straight spokesare measured over total length.Spoke finish: Polished, unpolished, powdercoated, black chromed, chemically blacked, galvanised or bright steel.Nipple size: Gauge, diameter underhead, material and type of finish.Spoke type: Single gauge, single butted ordouble butted. Please note: Similar material, such asstainless steel spokes with stainless steelnipples can seize together over time. If indoubt, please ask before you order!Spoke Materials Galvanised steel was the traditionalmaterial for spokes, although stainlesssteel is now more popular and gives abetter longer lasting finish. Unpolished stainless steel spokesresemble galvanized spokes with theadded benefit of being corrosion resistant. Polished stainless steel gives spokes achrome-like appearance, but without thesame level of maintenance. Bright steel single gauge and singlebutted are available (for painting) incertain diameters (see page 19). Single and double butted spokes are only produced in stainless steel and canonly be supplied polished. Bulldog spokes are made from a hightensile stainless steel developed for theMotocross / Offroad market. The materialis very hard wearing and will not stretch with use. Bulldog spokes can onlysupport bends up to 35 degrees. Galvanized spoke sets are usuallysupplied with zinc plated steel nipples. Stainless steel spoke sets are supplied with nickel plated brass nipples for RoadBikes or nickel plated steel nipples forOffroad Bikes. Bulldog spokes are usually supplied with aluminium nipples. (can be Nickelplated steel). Chemically dipped black spokes (singlegauge or single butted). In Satin finish. Black chromed spokes (single gauge orsingle butted.
