Colorado Mesa University Athletic Training ProgramSECTION I – Overview of the Colorado Mesa UniversityAthletic Training ProgramPrefaceThis handbook is designed to give you, as an athletic training student (ATS), a place toreference all academic guidelines, policies, procedures and expectations while you are inthe Athletic Training Program (ATP) and Colorado Mesa University (CMU). As youcomplete your immersion experiences during your second year in the ATP, some of thesepolicies and procedures may not apply to you. If you have questions about variouscircumstances, please ask either the Program Director (PD) of Coordinator of ClinicalEducation (CCE).Profession of Athletic TrainingThe athletic training profession is recognized by the America Medical Association(AMA), Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA), and the Department ofHealth and Human Services (HHS) as an allied health care profession. Athletic trainers(ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who collaborate withphysicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis,therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Athletictrainers work under the direction of a physician as prescribed by state licensurestatutes. The NATA Code of Ethics (included in Appendix I) states the principles ofethical behavior that should be followed in the practice of athletic training.TerminologyStudents, faculty and staff are encouraged to use the appropriate terminology to describeone’s self, one’s experiences, and one’s profession. As guided by the National AthleticTrainers’ Association (NATA), the terms “trainer”, “training room”, and “athletictraining room” are discouraged. Replace these terms with “athletic trainer” and “athletictraining facility” or “athletic training clinic”. Additionally, as a student, you are anathletic training student (ATS). Colorado Mesa University Athletic Training ProgramSECTION II- CMU Athletic Training ProgramProgram OverviewThe Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) Program is designed to preparegraduates to successfully take and pass the BOC examination and become an athletictrainer. We strive to produce competent athletic trainers that will continue to drive ourprofession forward.The MSAT Program is a two-year, standalone master’s degree, delivered via traditional,online, and hybrid formats. The degree employs course content that focuses on thecompetencies needed to practice both the art and science of athletic training, leading tocompassionate and exceptional care to meet the regional needs of western Colorado andbeyond. In alignment with the mission of the Department of Kinesiology, the programemphasizes promoting wellness and physical activity across a diverse population ofpatients. Students learn the importance of self-care and fostering resilience and wellnessin themselves, in order to extend better care to others. Over the course of the two yearenrolled, students will complete a number of clinical rotations, including immersionexperiences during year 2 that most likely will take place remotely. During year 1students should plan on spending an average of 20 – 25 hours/week in a clinicalassignment which will increase to an average of 30 – 50 hours/week during the year 2immersion experience.Mission StatementThe mission of the Athletic Training Program at Colorado Mesa University (CMU) is toproduce competent athletic trainers who use clinical decision making to provide patientcare on varied populations. Through the program's professional preparation, whichemphasizes patient-centered care and evidenced based practice in both didactic andclinical education, CMU Athletic Training Program graduates are well prepared to helpathletes of our region and beyond enjoy wellness and physical activity.Athletic Training Program OutcomesGraduates of this program will:1. Differentiate between risk management practices, health care deliverymechanisms, insurance and reimbursement options, forms of documentation, andfacility management strategies.2. Develop policies and procedures to aid in the prevention of athletic injuries andillnesses.3. Evaluate and care for athletic injuries and illnesses based on an understanding ofanatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and abnormal social, emotional, and mentalbehaviors, while maintaining patient privacy.4. The Athletic Training PD will work with the AthleticTraining Program Coordinator of Clinical Education (CCE) to ensure that all ATSs areexposed to the clinical experiences necessary to satisfy the requirements to be eligible totake the Board of Certification examination.Athletic Training Program Coordinator of Clinical Education (CCE)The Athletic Training Program CCE is responsible for scheduling which clinicalexperiences the athletic training students will be assigned to. The Athletic TrainingProgram CCE will work with the Athletic Training PD to ensure that all athletic trainingstudents are exposed to the clinical experiences necessary to satisfy the requirements tobe eligible to take the Board of Certification examination.Athletic Training Student (ATS)An athletic training student is defined as a student who is officially accepted into theAthletic Training Program. Colorado Mesa University Athletic Training ProgramAdmission RequirementsThere are two tracks for admission into the MSAT Program, the traditional track and the3 2 track. Colorado Mesa University Athletic Training Program CASPer ExamCASPer SnapshotNote: Slight preferences are given to those applicants with ties to the westernslope of Colorado.Additionally, applicants are encouraged to obtain 150 hours of post high school athletictraining experience (3 credit hours of KINE 499). The Graduate Record Examination(GRE) is not required for admission to the Master of Science in Athletic TrainingProgram. To be considered for an interview, all applicants for whom English is a secondlanguage must achieve a minimum score of 550 paper-based on the Test of English as aForeign Language (TOEFL), within the past two years. Advanced placement will not begranted under any circumstance. All students who enter the program must fulfill allprogram requirements.3 2 track:Applicants must meet the following criteria in addition to all of the criteria for thetraditional track. Declared Exercise Science major. Classified as a senior (i.e., at least 90 credit hours including hours in whichstudent is currently enrolled and for which the student is registered for a futuresemester.). At least a 3.0 overall GPA and must have at least a 3.0 GPA in courses in thestudent’s declared major. A 3 2 Concurrent Enrollment application form to the MSAT Program Director. Submit to the MSAT Program Director how all remaining bachelor degreerequirements and all MSAT requirements will be met in two years.
