Thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself to the widercommunity of our Family of Parishes. I am the sixth child of Bruce and Shirley Georgeof Delhi, a little tobacco town down by Lake Erie. (Prior to that, my family was military,so my siblings had a very difficult experience of growing up.) Dad taught history andEnglish in the local high school, so we kept up on everything! (Before the internet, wehad four daily newspapers and six weeklies delivered to our house: it was literally read,or be crushed)! We were all served by the priests in Delhi and Fr. Mike Dalton was a friend of the familyand a hero of mine. I told my grade 1 teacher I wanted to be a priest and that sentimentremained with me my entire life. (While most vocations are happening later in life likemarriage, I went off to the Seminary at 18, too young to drink)! I served my internship/diaconate at St. Clair Beach, a suburb of Windsor. I was an Associate Pastor at OurLady Help of Christians in Wallaceburg for two years, with two years at St. Justin’s inLondon to follow. My first placement as a pastor was five years at St. Mary’s,Tillsonburg. After asking for more than ten years, I was allowed to go to the Missions:two years at Watson Lake, in the Diocese of Whitehorse. While there, I was diagnosedwith colorectal cancer and so I returned to London for treatment. Following the surgery,(permanent colostomy and ileul conduit) I filled in at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Windsor, while the pastor was having by-pass surgery. After nine months there, I was appointedto St. Boniface in Zurich and St. Peter’s in St. Joseph.Growing up, my family was very involved in Pro-Life and other justice issues: as apriest, I have served as the chaplain to the Catholic Rural Life Conference and theDiocesan Development and Peace Committee; as director of the Mission Office andcurrently, as a member of the Ecumenical Commissions. When it comes to recreations, I like to think of myself as an outdoorsman: my familycamped each summer and I had 10 years in the Scouting Movement as Cub, Scout,Venturer and a Cub leader.I look forward to meeting more parishioners God willing when our epidemic ends. Untilthen, we’ll probably meet at an Adult Faith Development event: while I’ve tried to avoidbecoming a teacher like my father and brothers, you cannot escape some of this stuff!Thank you to all the volunteers and people in the pews who have gone out of their wayto introduce themselves and make me feel welcome in our Family of Parishes!God Bless, Fr. Pray with Us: Oct. 4 — 12We invite you and your family to join brother Knights and fellow Catholics around theworld in a Novena for the Cause of Life beginning on Sunday, Oct. 4, and ending on Monday, Oct. 12. Throughout these nine days, we will pray for an end to abortion, euthanasiaand other social ills that result in broken families and unhappiness, and which threaten themost vulnerable. The novena calls upon the intercession of Our Lady and draws uponunique quotes from the teachings of Pope Francis regarding the sanctity of all human life.Joinbrother Knights and their families to pray this novena for the defense of life and invite your pastorand fellow parishioners to do the same. By uniting in prayer, we’ll be able to stand up against — andultimately defeat — threats against life.A downloadable version of the novena can be found here. You can also sign up to receive a dailyemail, which will include the unique petitions for each of the nine days of the novena. Click here fordetails.Christian hope is not the same thing as optimism, Optimism is a tendency to emphasize the goodpart in a situation at the expense of noticing: the bad part, or the feeling that the future good thingsare more likely to happen than bad things. In the thought of the German philosopher G.W. Leibniz, optimism is the belief that we are already living in the best of all possible worlds.Christian hope is very different. According to Thomas Aquinas, hope is the virtue that gives us confidence that a very difficult and arduous task to be completed or a goal to be reached can beachieved with the help of God's grace. So, Christian hope is fully aware of the difficulties that willhave to be fated to overcome a present injustice or evil. Christian hope also acknowledges ourweakness and the fact that only God's help will see us through. But Christian hope is also confidentthat just as God's labours have empowered us in the past, so now God's faithfulness will not fail us.This month, we enter into the final weeks of the liturgical year, and the Scriptures begin to be filledwith eschatological images of judgment and future victory. It is important that we approach theseimagesthroughthelensofChristianhope.Isaiah and Jesus call us to confront the very real injustices and evils in our midst: racism, economicinjustice, colonialism, exclusion based on gender or orientation, among others. They call us toacknowledge that God condemns all forms of persecution of the neighbour. We are to purify ourhearts of all these evils. They also present a vision of what a recreated and reconciled humanity willlook like, and they want us to hunger for the coming of that vision of the reign of God, to ache forGod's final eschatological wedding banquet. They speak confidently that just as God's labours haveempowered us in the past, so now God's faithfulness will not fail us. Like Isaiah's Servant, we aregiven grace that enables us to participate in the coming of God's reign. This year has been filledwith many struggles and difficulties, enough to destroy any and all optimism. But Christian hope liberates us to look reality in the face, to ask for the divine help we need, and to work alongside Jesusas he labours to bring about a re-created and reconciled humanity. We may not see the eschatological wedding banquet any time soon, but we are confident that the coming of God's reign is worththe effort.Gilles Mongreay. S. J.Wishing everyone a safe and blessed Thanksgiving Weekend!
