Heli-Coil screw thread insertsTypes of InsertsThere are two styles ofHeli-Coil inserts. TheSTANDARD or Free RunningInsert – available in bothTanged and Tangless – whichprovides a smooth free-runningthread; and SCREW-LOCK –available in both Tanged andTangless – which provides selflocking torque on the malemember by a series of “chords”on one or more of the insertcoils. They are available in inchseries, coarse and fine andmetric series, coarse and fine.Inch series Screw-Lock insertsare dyed red for identification.Heli-Coil inserts are precisionformed coils of extremely hard,diamond shaped 304 stainlesssteel. When installed into anSTI tapped hole, they providepermanent conventional 60 internal screw threads. Thisassembled insert accommodatesany standard bolt or screw asper MIL-S-7742 and AS8879(UNJ controlled root radius). Seepage 9 for material availability.Heli-Coil inserts are larger indiameter before installationthan the tapped hole. Duringinstallation the inserting toolapplies torque to the tangreducing the diameter of theleading coil permitting it toenter the tapped thread.
