Saturday, M arch 1 7, 2 007DailyVolume 5 0, N umber 950th S pring N orth A merican B ridge C hampionshipsDefenses to 1NTAsk a group ofexperts about theirfavorite methods ofcompeting when anopponent opens astrong 1NT (15—17), and you willreceive a variety ofanswers. The DailyBulletin has featuredone method each dayduring the NABC.Note: Players should be aware that several ofthe systems described in this series use Mid-Chartconventions and are not permited in events thatare restricted to the General Convention Chart. The director in charge can provide the informationyou need.Today’s expert is Jerry Helms from CharlotteNC.Helms, like many top players, loves tocompete over the opponents’ opening 1NT. Beforehe created HELLO, he disliked having to doubleor bid 2 with one suit. After experimenting withvarious methods, he, along with co-inventor BillLohmann, came up with HELLO (the name isformed from the first initials of their surnames).“The weakness of many methods is that theycan’t bid 2 or 2 directly,” said Helms. “Thisgives the opponents free rein at the two level. They can bid Stayman or make a transfer bid. When we created HELLO, addressing this was ourfirst priority.“When you own a major, especially spades, you want to be able to bid it immediately for thepreemptive effect,” Helms said. “We want tointerfere, but also bid accurately when it is ourhand. The whole idea is to be constructivelyobstructive. HELLO gets your partner involved.”The system can be used against either weak orstrong 1NT since the double is not needed to showone of the hand types.Helms points out other advantages of hisDouble 2 2 2 2 2NT 3 3 penalty or a strong hand.diamonds or a majorminor two-suitertransfer to hearts.majorsspadesclubsminorsmajors, strongerthan 2 system. In certain HELLO auctions, the unknownhand, the partner of the one who bid, will be thedeclarer. This happens when you bid 2 totransfer to hearts, for example. The partner acceptsthe transfer and “He might have something crazysuch as a low doubleton heart and a six-card clubsuit or just about anything,” said Helms. The strong hand is on lead and has no idea ofthe strength or distribution of the declarer. Daily BulletinPage 3JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSSlam bidding toolsB y M ark E hrettWhat’s more funin bridge than gettingto the right slam? Notmuch! Usually, thefirst slam biddingconvention we learn isBlackwood. Since itmight be the onlyconvention we have to find slams, it tends to beoverused by newer players. Knowing when notto use Blackwood is important. For example:— Don’t use Blackwood with a void.— Don’t use Blackwood with a worthlessdoubleton.Consider this South hand: – A K J 9 8 6 4 3 K Q 7 A QWestNorthEastSouth1 Pass2 Pass3 Pass? What if we bid 4NT (Blackwood) and Northbids 5 , showing one ace? Do we know whatace it is? We can’t assume that partner’s ace is inthe spade suit just because he opened 1 .Partner’s hand could be K J 10 7 2 Q 10 5 2 A 8 K 3That makes you ice cold for 7 , but usingBlackwood can’t help you get there.Try bidding 4 . That shows the A. Youand partner have already agreed on hearts astrumps, so 4 can’t be anything but first-roundcontrol of the suit (a void is a possibility, butmost often it will be the ace). Now it’s partner’s turn. 4 shows the A. Ifpartner bids 4 , that denies the A - he will bidhis controls “up the line,” so skipping 4 deniesthe ace of that suit. Here’s another. As South you hold: A K J 8 3 K 7 J 3 A 8 4 2WestNorthEastSouth1 Pass2 Pass3 Pass3 Pass?If you bid 4NT (Blackwood) at this point andpartner shows only one ace, you could be off twoquick diamond losers - and guess what theopponents are going to lead.Bid 5 . A jump to the five level of theagreed-on major asks partner to describe hisholding in the unbid suit (or the opponents’ suitif they are in the auction). In this auction, partnerhas four choices.Pass No first- or second-round control indiamonds, the unbid suit.5NT Guarded K.6 Singleton diamond.6 A or void.Note that the 5NT bid by partner will protectthe K from the opening lead if the finalThinking bridgeNorth should even bother with Stayman giventhose “robust” spades. A direct 3NT is a viableoption.Defensive commentary: When East playsthe 10 at trick one, West knows South hasthe A K Q 9. Why? (1) The play of the 10denies the 9. With the 10?9, the proper play isthe 9, the lower equal. (2) When the openingleader (West) has the card directly above thecard partner has played ( J), this is a telltalesign that third hand has played his highestcard. Two tips to tuck away.Play commentary: As declarer, it isusually most deceptive when holding threeequals to take a trick with the middle equal( K). With two equals it is almost alwaysright to take the trick with the higher equal. One major exception: At notrump, holding theB y E ddie K antt arDlr: NorthVul: E-W Q6 10 9 J8765 A542 8543 KQJ 42 K J 10 9 AK92 876542 10 3 3 J 10 7 A3 AKQ9 Q876WestNorthEastSouthPassPass1NTPass2 Pass2 Pass3NTAll PassOpening lead: 6.Bidding commentary: It’s not clear thatThis cartoon is from Jude Goodwin's new book, Goahead, Laugh, published by Master Point Press, andavailable from bridge suppliers and majjor bookstores.contract is notrump. North might have Q 2 A Q J 9 6 4 4 K 9 6 3,in which case he will bid 6 over 5 .What a great bidding sequence. EasleyBlackwood would be proud you didn’t misusehis convention.A-K-(x), take the trick with the king. Afterwinning the K, South leads a club and, assuming East plays low, a second club.Defensive commentary: On the secondclub, East discards a low heart, not a highspade. Keep winners, discard losers. Uponwinning the A, West counts declarer for ninetricks: three diamonds, three clubs and byinference, three hearts. East must switch to the Q. Risky? Not really. North is known tohave the A K Q, the Q and the A for 15high-card points. Voila! Partner must haveboth top spades. When East leads the queen,West plays low (can’t afford the 9 with the 8 5 4 3 in dummy). Not to worry, partnerwill continue the suit.Intermediate-NNewcomermasterpoint leadersLocall playersBarbara and DollphBriidgewater won theIN Swiiss Teamsearllier.123456789101112131417.66 Don Grider, Georgetown TX17.66 Inez Grider, Georgetown TX16.52 Jay D Shah, St Louis MO16.45 James Carey, Clinton IA15.86 Michael Smith, Des Moines IA15.55 Marlene Beranek, Glenview IL15.55 Mary Hilman, Mt Prospect IL13.86 Mike Arnheim, St Louis MO12.99 Daniel Spangler, Saint Peters MO12.83 Vyrn Muir, Coon Rapids MN12.71 Camilla Rabjohns, Peoria Heights IL12.71 Doris Niemann, Charlotte NC12.71 William Welborn, Waxhaw NC12.39 Gayle Segar, Rochester MNContinued on page 9
