Section III.INSPECTIONInspection Procedures2-4. General2-6.This section provides specific instructionsfor guidance during inspection by direct andgeneral support maintenance personnel ofmateriel in the hands of troops in the field, indirect and general support shops, and in alertedunits scheduled for oversea duty. Inspectionsare made for the purpose of: (1) determinethe condition of an item as to serviceability,(2) recognizing conditions that would causefailure, (3) assuring proper application ofmaintenance policies at prescribed levels, and(4) determine the ability of a unit to accomplish its maintenance and supply missions.Warning. Before starting an inspection, besure to clear the weapon. DO NOT actuate thetrigger until the weapon has been cleared. In-'spect the chamber, to insure that it is empty, and check to see that no ammunition is in position to be introduced (magazine). Avoid having live ammunition in the vicinity of workarea.2-5.Categories of InspectionRefer to AR 750-8.a. Refer to table 2-3 and TM 9-1005-21112.b. Complete inspection of all parts is notalways necessary, good judgment should be exercised pertaining to the degree of inspectionof integral parts within assemblies.Table 2-3. Inspect for pitting, bulges, and sharpness oflands. Barrel must be straight, as determinedvisually, clean and free of corrosion. Pits inthe chamber are allowable if they are not largeenough to cause extraction difficulties. Pits aswide as a land or groove and less than threeeights are allowable. Barrels containing pits,as indicated in figure 2-5, will be rejected.Scattered or uniformly fine pits or fine pits ina densely pitted area are allowable. Tool marksor scratches are accepted regardless of length.Tool marks will appear on lines runninglaterally in the grooves or may run spirallyacross the top of lands. Definitely ringed boresor bores ringed sufficiently to bulge the outsidesurface of the barrel are cause for rejection. However, faint rings or shadowy depressionsdo not indicate an unserviceable barrel andshould not be cause for rejection. Barrels willbe rejected if worn sufficiently to affect sharpness of the lands. However, pits cutting intolands are acceptable if within the limitationsdescribed above. Lands that appear dark dueto coating or gilding metal from projectilesshould not be cause for rejection.Inspect the barrel bearing for burs and excessive 4, fig B-2wear.XXXXXXXXXXInspect slide for breaks or cracks, especiallyaround the ejector port. Inspect the interiorgrooves and ejector port of slide for excessivewear or burs. CHAPTER 3REPAIR INSTRUCTIONSSection I.3-1.GENERAL MAINTENANCEassembly as indicated in TM 9-1005-211-12.GeneralThis section provides instructions on generalmaintenance procedures.3-2.General Repair Methodsa. Disassembly and Assembly Procedures.(1) In disassembling the pistol, removethe major groups and assemblies (fig B-l)whenever possible. Groups and assemblies maybe disassembled, as necessary, into individualparts.(2) Complete disassembly of a unit is notalways necessary in order to make a requiredreplacement or repair. Good judgment shouldbe exercised to keep disassembly and assemblyoperations to a minimum.(3) During assembly, assemblies andgroups should be assembled first, then installedto form a complete unit. Lubricate parts beforeSection II.b. Replacement of Parts.(1) Parts will be replaced when unserviceable.(2) When assembling a unit, replacespring pins, if available. If screws, nuts, washers, and retainers are damaged they willbe replaced.(3) All springs should be replaced if theyare broken, deformed, fail to function properly,or fail to meet specific requirements.(4) If a new part is not available, a reconditioned part may be substituted. Such reconditioned parts should be examined carefullyto determine their serviceability.3-3.CleaningRefer to TM 9-1005-211-12 for detailedcleaning procedures.MAINTENANCE OF CALIBER .45,AUTOMATIC, PISTOL, M1911A13-4.Generala. With the safety unlocked, rest theweight on the floor and hook thenotched portion of the rod overthe center portion of the trigger.Note. Make certain the rod does notcontact or rub any portion of thepistol and that rod and barrel areparallel. Empty magazine must beinstalled when checking the triggerpull.Step 2. Depress grip safety and carefullyraise the weight from the floor. When using the 5 pound weight(minimum), the trigger should;, .not release the hammer. When using the 6.5 pound weight (maximum), the trigger should releasethe hammer.Caution: A slow and steady liftmust be utilized to assure atrue and accurate check.3-6. Correcting Trigger PullCaution. While stoning, critical dimensionsshould not be altered.a. Trigger Pull Too Light. This is evidenceof a worn cocking notch on the hammer, wornor damaged sear, or a weak helical compressionhousing spring. Examine the components forwear or damage. If trigger pull cannot be corrected by stoning, replace with new components, as required.b. Trigger Pull Exercise. This is evidenceof burs or surface irregularities on the hammer full-cock notch or sear. A helical compression housing spring that is damaged or toostrong and/or interferences or binding betweenthe mating surfaces of the pertinent partswithin the receiver group are other probablecauses. If the .trigger pull cannot be correctedby stoning,-replace with new components, asrequired.c. Creep in Trigger. Creep is defined as aperceptible movement of the trigger after theslack has been taken up and before the hammer is released. It is caused by rough or uneven mating surfaces of the sear, hammer, anddisconnector and also by unserviceable searand hammer pins. If the creep cannot be corrected by stoning, replace with new components, as required.3-3
