Someof our church celebrationswere at times when ourchurch was going throughdifficulttimesand weneededreminding ofGod'smany blessings. Many of thecelebrations were closedwith a communion service. The celebrations could nothave been accomplishedwithout the help of many ofyou. It is amazing how manypeople have been a part ofthe hours of planning it takesto have a celebration.“Many Gifts—Same Spirit.”Sunday morning's theme was“God's People are our People” and the evening themewas “We are God's Family.”The Sunday evening meal wasserved by Hope MennoniteChurch.Ourfirstcelebrationwas in1990with the theme of CelebrateGod's Blessings. We learnedto know each other by bringing tools of our trade to useas centerpieces. The themefor the Saturday evening mealwhich was served by theFaith Mennonite Church was“PraiseEvents” washeld in 1993with a largetent in theeast parking lot of the church. The tent was filled to overflowing. In 1991the celebrationwas a reunion ofthe New Directions whichhad been a singing group directed first by Vyron Schmidtand later by Roger Smith, both of who had been youthdirectors of FMC.The Hobby Fair was in 1992during the time we wereworking with outreachthrough the LIFE (Living inFaithful Evangelism) program. Many people filled the basement rooms with their hobbies.Verney Unruh retired in1998. The church celebratedhis retirement. In 2000we celebratedwith“Blessingand Beginnings.”Fun Fest was held in 2002.The community was invitedto share in this event withinflatable rides and games setup in the west parking lot.Over 900 persons attendedthe event on Saturday despitethe 100 degree temperature.Numerous thank you cardswere received from community persons attending.The125thanniversary ofthechurch was celebrated in2003. A bus ride with narration was provided to varioushistorical areas around Newton that had been instrumental in starting FMC. Historical skits were given. Theworship service gave praiseto God for all the blessingsgiven to the church. In 2016 and 2017 severalmini-celebrations were held. The first was celebrating thecompletion of the Nebraskahouse. The evening celebration was held at Son WrayRanch. Another celebrationwas in the form of a serviceproject to the Wichita Food(Continued on page 4)

Inaddition to the many activitiestaking place at VBS, the children created original leaves tobe included on a banner representing the logo. The banner will be shared with thecongregation later this summer.Once again, we acknowledge itwould not have been possiblewithout those who volunteered to help out with VBS.Thanks is extended to thosewho donated items, plannedlessons and activities, helpedsupervise children, preparedand served the Friday eveningcook-out and Saturday lunch, and who upheld Vacation BibleSchool in prayer.

With those namesI’ll have to be spiritual!!My brother-in-law built thisrental home in the early1990’s. I am filled with gratitude at how God has providedand continues to do so. Thehelp I have received in different ways during this transitionis nearly overwhelming. These weeks are busy: cleaning, lots of yard work, houserepairs, painting, getting toknow the area through furniture shopping and visiting areachurches, time with three different visitors, and even get-ting out in the abundant woods inthis area.Future ministry is still a question. God has reminded me several times that I need to keep mymind off my own inadequacies, that it will be His leading and onlyHis power and presence that canaccomplish it.Thanks for your prayers for meduring this time.

Volume 28, Issue 7Outreach: Showing God’sLove to People OutsideOur Church WallsDid you know that FMC has helpedto set up 3 apartments for refugeesarriving in Wichita this year?As a result of connections that weremade after FMC’s Adult SundaySchool class on Issues of Immigration in the US in January 2017, wewere asked by St. Francis MigrationMinistries to set up two apartmentsfor refugees arriving from Democratic Republic of the Congo on theevening of January 23, 2018. Oneapartment was to be set up for afamily of 3, and the other apartmentwas to be set up for a single man.Thirteen individuals from our congregation (in an informal groupcalled the Refugee Interest Group)met up in Wichita and movedcouches, dressers and varioushousehold items. We arrangedrooms, made beds, washed all thenewly donated dishes, set up thekitchen and even got a crock potgoing. (Thefamily ofthree wasarriving thatvery night!)Typically, theMigrationMinistry inWichita isonly given aPage 7few days’ notice before a family arrives. They rely on volunteers likeus to come with only a few days’notice to set up. It took us almost 4hours, but was a thrilling experience. Afterwards, several of us hadthe amazing and heart-warming opportunity to greet the family at theairport. It was an experience we’llnever forget! On June 6, 2018 we were onceagain asked to help set up an apartment for a refugee who would bearriving in Wichita only days later.Once again, it was a young manfrom the Congo (age 22). Can youimagine moving to a completely newplace, new culture at the age of 22?Never mind the trauma he’s mostcertainly already endured in hishomeland. Luckily, the apartmentcomplex we moved him into wasthe same one with the family of 3 inJanuary. And we were told thatthere are at least 10 other familiesin this large complex that arrivedhere from the Congo as refugeeswithin the last year. So there willbe a community for him of peoplewho can wholeheartedly relate. ACongolese family next door alreadyoffered to make him his first mealon the evening that he was to arrive. We loaded up a couple of truckswith furniture from St. Matthews’Episcopal Church, picked up totesof toiletries and household stapleslike toilet paper, hand towels, clean-ers, dish soap, and toothbrushesfrom St. Francis Migration Ministries head office, and moved theitems up 3 flights of stairs to theapartment (with help from theneighbors), set it all up and made itfeel welcoming for the followinghour or two. It was challenging, exciting, bonding and outreaching.Since the SS class on Immigrationand our firstapartment setup, we havehad severalpeople fromour congregation contactSt. FrancisMigration Ministries to donate household items and lightlyused furniture. Thank you! Pleaselet any member of the OutreachCommission know if you are everinterested in helping with an apartment set-up or donating an item. You can also emailkendra.alison606@gmail.com if youhave lightly-used furniture that youwould like to donate.Thank you to all of you who encourage, pray, help, donate andshow God’s love to immigrants andrefugees in ourwider community!
