InstallationTopaz ReMaskUser ManualTopaz ReMask works as both a standalone editor andplugin. This means a compatible host editor is notrequired to use Topaz ReMask, although you mayaccess it as a plugin in a few compatible host editors.System RequirementsMac OS X 10.8 or higherWindows 7/8 x64 Open GL 2.1*Does not support Windows 32bitDownload Instructions To download ReMask please visit topazlabs.com/downloads.Locate Topaz ReMask and click on the appropriateMac or Windows button beneath that product tostart your download.The download should start automatically, howeverif prompted, select ‘Save’.The downloaded installer will then be located inyour Downloads folder or desktop as an .exe file(Windows) or a .dmg file (Mac).Installation1. Exit Photoshop or any other image editing program ifit is open.2. Open the Topaz ReMask .dmg or .exe file,doubleclick on the Topaz ReMask installer and thenfollow the on-screen instructions.3. InstallationTopaz ReMaskUser ManualAccessing ReMask in HostProgramsImportant: Your image will need to be 8-bit or 16-bitand in RGB mode. Go to Image- Mode to change this.Photoshop, PSE, and PSCCAccessing ReMask in LightroomTo use ReMask as a plugin in Ps, Pse and PsCC you mustfirst run it as a standalone editor (Mac only). ReMaskwill then be available to use in Photoshop via the Filtermenu. For Windows, the plugin should automaticallyappear in the Filter list.I can’t find ReMask in the Photoshop Filter menuAfter installation is complete, open Lightroom andnavigate to Photo - Edit In - Topaz ReMask 5.Please Note: Lightroom does not support layers.Any transparent masked areas will be returned toLightroom as white. Any images with solid color orimage backgrounds will be returned to Lightroomas flattened images.Accessing ReMask in Corel Paintshop Pro1. First launch PaintShop Pro.2. Go to Menu file - Preferences - File Locations.Select “Plug-ins” from the “File Types” list and click“Add”.3. Choose C: \ Program Files \ Topaz Labs \ TopazReMask plug-ins and click “OK”.Should ReMask not appear in the Filter menu, you mayneed to exit out of Photoshop and then re-open it.4. Now you can run ReMask 5as a standalone program or as a plugin. This will alsoenable ReMask to be used with Lightroom. Wheninstalling ReMask 5 the icon will be added to yourApplications, along with your other standalone Topazprograms.2. Background Replacement and EditingWe’ve added new features that allow you to replaceand edit the background of your masked imagewithout having to leave ReMask. Once you computeyour mask a background panel will appear in theediting parameters on the left.you select an image background.The orange transform icon will allow you to scaleand rotate the background image. Once you havethe background image to the size and position thatyou want, click the orange icon again to deselect thebackground image and continue editing.The yellow image select icon will allow you to changebackground images from the image you originallyselected.8Beneath the background icons are sliders that willallow you to edit the background image to bettermatch the masked foreground.3. Using the green, red and blue primary brush tools, youwill define the areas that you want to keep (green), remove (red) and compute (blue).1. Work AreaTopaz ReMaskUser ManualToolsGeneral ToolsThe general tools include: undo, redo, selectionmarquee, hand tool, and zoom. The square selectionmarquee tool allows you to select a certain area of yourimage to mask without affecting the areas outside ofthat boundary.BRUSHESPrimary BrushesThe primary (or basic) brush tools allow you to selectthe elements in the image t hat you want to keep(green), remove (red) and compute (blue). The primarybrushes will turn into the Topaz Magic brush after youselect Compute. Brush sizes range from 1 - 255.14To pan the preview image, select the hand tool(press H ) and hold the left mouse button on thepreview image and drag it around. You can alsopan your preview image by holding the spacebar keyand moving your mouse or by using the red selectionbox in your preview navigator.Topaz Magic BrushThe Topaz Magic Brush tool (which becomes availableafter you select “Compute Mask”) allows you to makeintricate detail eliminations and recoveries to selectedparts of your image. It will only affect the blue area ofyour initial trimap. It will not change your original redand green selections.

Topaz ReMaskUser ManualColor Range BrushesThese brushes allow you to brush out the foregroundor background area in your image, based on the colorselected and the setting of the Color slider.Color RangeThe Color Range slider allows you to determine thespectrum of shades affected within the image based onthe main color selection.Work AreaTransparency BrushesThis brush allows you to define two colors (keep/ greenand remove/red) to target at once. The transparencybrush is key for images where transparency is a factorbecause it will allow users to select a foreground color,such as the white of a wedding veil, and a backgroundcolor to be removed from behind the veil.ForegroundColorBackgroundColorFILLSThe fill tools allow you to fill all of your image or just aportion of your image with the selected color.Compute MaskThe Compute Mask button will analyze your trimapselections and create your image mask. After youclick this button additional mask refinement tools willappear allowing you to create a more accurate mask.15

User ManualTopaz ReMaskADJUSTMENTSAfter you make your trimap selections you will needto click on “Compute Mask” for your selections to beanalyzed and your mask created. Once your mask iscreated the Adjustment options will appear, allowingyou to refine your mask even further.Work AreaEdge HardnessDetermines how hard your mask is applied to subjectedges in your image. The higher the parameter theharder your edges will be. The lower the parameter,the softer (more feathered) your edges will be.Mask StrengthDetermines the brightness of the mask. Increasingthis parameter will give you more detail by making theweaker mask details stronger.Edge ShiftShifts the mask edge by one pixel in either direction.Recovery (Foreground Color)Revives the color of your foreground in weaker / moretransparent areas.Desaturation (Foreground Color)Desaturates the edges of your mask (in weaker/moretransparent areas) to help with color contaminationand bleeding.ResetThe reset tools allow you to reset your entire image tothe selected trimap color. Using this feature will eraseany previous selections made.16

User ManualTopaz ReMaskBACKGROUNDOnce your mask is refined you have the ability toselect which type of background you would like foryour image: transparent, solid color, or image. Youalso have the ability to make some adjustments to thebackground, if you choose an image background.Work AreaTransformThe transform icon will allow you to make changes tothe scale and orientation of your background image.Image SelectThe image select icon will allow you to change yourbackground image to a different image.17TransparentSelecting a transparent background will hideeverything that you selected to Cut in your mask andwill appear on screen as a gray and white checkerboardpattern.Solid ColorThe solid color background option allows youto choose what color will appear in place of Cutselections. This is an excellent way to check your maskas well.ImageSelecting this option will open your computer filebrowser, allowing you to select an image as thebackground.BrightnessAdjusts the brightness of your image. Drag to the leftto decrease brightness. Drag to the right to increasebrightness.ContrastAdjusts the difference between light and dark colorsin your image. Drag to the left to to increase contrastdifference. Drag to the right to decrease contrastdifference.SaturationAdjusts the depth of color in an image. Drag to the leftto decrease depth and brightness, moving closer to amonochromatic image. Drag to the right to brightenand deepen colors.

Drag to the right tocreate a warmer (yellow) image.TintAdjusts the color tones of your image. Drag to the leftto give your image a green tint. Drag to the right togive your image a magenta tint.BlurAdjusts how clearly you see the background image.Drag to the right to increase the amount of blur on thebackground image.Saving Your ImageSaving your image with ReMask is a fairly simple task.To save navigate to the bottom right corner and select‘Save As’Another way to save your image is to navigate to thetop menu bar and select File- Save As18You’ll then have the option to name the file and choosethe file types: JPEG, TIFF and PNGSubject masked out and background blurred using ReMask 5 asa standalone program.Depending on the file type, you’ll then be presentedwith several options including color space and bitdepth.

Topaz ReMaskUser Manual50% Gray – The undefined area that the computer(Topaz ReMask) will need to figure out.Achromatic - Without color.Action – A recorded task that works as an automatedmemory of the enhancement and adjustment stepsexecuted on an image. Once an Action has beenrecorded it can be invoked and reapplied to otherimages without manually making the changes.Adjustment Layer – A layer that allows you to adjustthe look of an original image with out making itpermanent. With adjustment layers you can makevarious changes to a layer without damaging it and goback and readjust it at anytime.Algorithm – Any bit of code or programming thatdefines a process.Alpha Channel – Photoshop alpha channels are masksthrough which you can apply effects. The alpha channelis an 8-bit channel, which means it has 256 levels ofgray from 0 (black) to 255 (white). An alpha channellets you save and load selections.Black Area - The masked area, which indicates theportion of the image that you wish to get rid of.Blue Area - The undefined area that the computer(Topaz Mask) will need to figure out.Chroma - Purity or intensity of color.CMYK – Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. A colormodel commonly used for 4-color printing by printersto define and mix all of the colors they are capable ofoutputting.GlossaryColor Bleed (Color Contamination) - the transfer ofcolor between nearby objects, caused by the coloredreflection of indirect light.Color Decontamination - reduces color cast on theedges of a selection.Color Channel – The visual component of a color digitalimage that represents all the pixels in that picturemade up of a specific primary color. For example, in atypical digital photo, the primary colors of red, greenand blue (from the RGB color model) create all thecolors in that photo, which may be represented bythree color channels, each of red, green or blue.Desaturate - Decreasing the intensity of a color (hue).Diameter (brush) - Controls the size of the brush.Download – The process of transmitting or transferringdata from one device to another.Export – Outbound data transfer in a format that canbe used by other programs.Filter Adjustment – Allows you to shift the overall colorin an image.Green Area (Trimap View) - The active area, whichindicates the portion of the image that you wish tokeep.Gradient - The gradient tool creates a gradual blendbetweenmultiple colors.Hardness (brush) - Controls the size of the brush’s hardcenter.22

User ManualTopaz ReMaskImport – Inbound data transfer into a file or document.Layer Mask – An editable selection, attached to a layerthat tells Photoshop how to deal with the layer that itis attached to. It enables us to get rid of a part of thelayer but with the possibility to go back and edit theresult at any time (also called nondestructive editing).It in fact blocks part of the layer from appearing, asif erased, while still being there. Layer Masks provideextra flexibility to your Photoshop layers.Quick Mask - Allows you to paint on your selection (orthe masked area). Then once you have your selection,you can delete it, recolor it, mask it, etc.Red Area - The masked area, which indicates theportion of the image that you wish to get rid of.Refine – Improve (something) by making small changesto make it more subtle and accurate.Non-Destructive Editing - A form of editing where theoriginal content is not modified in the course of editing- instead the edits themselves are edited. This allowsfor easy adjustments and images effects at a later timemaking photo editing quick and flexible.RGB – Red, Green, Blue. The color model that is used indigital cameras and by computer monitors.Opacity – The amount of transparency a layer has.Trimap – User-generated mask map with three tones.In Mask View: White (keep) , Black (remove) and Gray(compute)In Trimap View: Green (keep), Red (remove) and Blue(compute)Pan and Zoom - A useful function that allows users tomagnify the captured image in the preview and then,by using the cursor, to move or pan around the image.Typically Pan and Zoom allows users to magnify theimage 2x or 4x time.
