How the water pump works4

Doing a demanding job:the water pumpFor an engine to work effectively, it must reach itsoptimum operating temperature quickly and constantlyremain as close to this temperature as possible underchanging conditions. The components in the coolingcircuit that allow this to happen are the cooler, thecoolant, the coolant lines, the thermostat and the waterpump. The task of the water pump is to regulate the heatcreated by the engine by effecting the circulation of thecoolant within the closed heating and cooling system.A thermostat is used to regulate the cooling circuit – andtherefore the engine temperature.However, water pumps are exposed to a myriad ofstresses during day-to-day operation, for example due toresidue in the cooling circuit, abrasive particles andwear. The engineeringknowledge that we accumulate together with the Schaeffler OEM expertise for water pump bearings and thermalmanagement modules is incorporated into all INA waterpumps.Next-generation cooling system:the thermal management moduleUnlike conventional thermostats, this module cancontrol the temperature of multiple systems independently and in response to requirements. It does thisby operating on a proactive basis and continuouslycalculating the required cooling performance for theindividual vehicle components. This halves the timeneeded to achieve the optimum engine temperature.Perfect design:bearings from INAHigh-grade bearings are a deciding factor for the durability and long service life of a water pump. The INA bearings for water pumps are arranged in a double row and,in contrast to standard double-row bearing arrangements,have running surfaces that are incorporated directly intothe shaft instead of an inner ring. As a result, there ismore mounting space for the rolling elements, whichmeans that the specific load carrying capacity is higherthan on solutions with standard single bearings.ball/ball bearingInnovative material:the mechanical sealTo counteract the main cause of coolant loss, we equipour water pumps with slide rings made of silicon carbide – an extremely hard, wear-resistant material that isextremely resistant to thermal shocks. For the counterrings, a comparatively soft material called carbon graphite is used, which is optimally adapted to the slide ring.ball/roller bearing6

It works based on an on-off principle,so the coolant only flows when it is actually needed.8Electric water pumpThe water pump is fully electric and is operated via theon-board 12V network, not via a belt. It is completelydecoupled from the engine speed. This means that theelectric motor continuously adjusts the individual outputof the pump.

Thermal management module with water pumpWith the thermal management module, INA has broughtabout a whole new evolutionary stage. This moduleenables the optimal operating temperature for internalcombustion engines to be reached and adjusted withinextremely short periods of time. Taking into account theoperating state and driving situation, it controls the volumeflow of coolant in a range of circuits, thereby increasingefficiency. Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions arereduced by up to 4%. This is becausewhen a timing belt is replaced, it is also recommendedto replace any components located within the belt driveat the same time, as in many cases, any integrated waterpump present will also be affected by wear.With timing belt kits with water pump from INA,you are ideally equipped for any eventuality, so you canavoid consequential damage and follow-up costs. Inaddition to the water pump, the kits also contain tensioner, deflection and guide pulleys and the timing beltas well as all accessories required for installation, suchas screws, nuts and seals.
