WATCHMENINT. EDWARD BLAKE'S APARTMENT - KITCHEN - EVENINGCLOSE ON: A "Have A Nice Day" HAPPY FACE PIN. STEAM risespast the pin. We hear a KETTLE BOILING.We PULL BACK and find that the pin adorns the lapel of a ROBEworn by EDWARD BLAKE, 50, .but still in his physical prime-body chiseled, built like a truck. Handsome too, save theLONG SCAR running down the side of his face.Blake removes the kettle from the stove. He scoops some Asiantea leaves from a can, dumps them in a cup . INT. EDWARD BLAKE'S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - EVENINGThe apartment is expensive but not quite luxurious. TerrificNew York view from the window. Blake lives well, if alone. Hehits the REMOTE while still in the kitchen mixing his tea, turning on the big screen TV--"THE MCLAUGHLIN GROUP":MCLAUGHLINIssue: The Soviet Union continued theirrecent series of military exercises, conducting a bomb test today in theBering Sea-CUT TO: A Satellite video of a bomb EXPLODING in the water-MCLAUGHLIN (CONT'D)--just 1500 miles off the southern coastof Alaska. President Richard Nixon issuedthis warning to the Soviets:CUT TO: PRESIDENT RICHARD NIXON-PRESIDENT NIXONThe United States does not start fights.Let it be clear that we maintain ourstrength in order to maintain peace. Soany adversary of ours should askthemselves this: Do the risks ofattacking America outweigh the potentialbenefits?CUT TO.: The cover of the BULLETIN OF ATOMIC SCIENTISTS, withan image of the "Doomsday Clock" on the cover.MCLAUGHLINAs a result of the Soviet activity, theBulletin of Atomic Scientists moved the"Doomsday Clock" up to 4 minutes untilMidnight: destruction by nuclear war./CON'T'TNTTRn\

Pat Buchanan:PAT BUCHANANZero. The Board of Directors of theBulletin of Atomic Scientists are not andhave never been familiar enough with thepolitical landscape to make theseproclamations which could send the publicinto a panic. The Soviets would neverrisk starting a war when we have awalking nuclear deterrent on our side.MCLAUGHLINDr. Manhattan-CUT TO: Stock footage of DR. MANHATTAN--a man, at least heappears to be, who has glowing blue skin. The stock footageshows Dr. Manhattan flying through the air as an ENORMOUSWARHEAD heads straight for him. With a wave of his hand, Dr.Manhattan stops the warhead in its flight--frozen in mid-air-inches from his face.MCLAUGHLIN (CONT'D)But does Dr. Manhattan's existenceguarantee world peace? Eleanor Clift:ELEANOR CLIFTWell, it hasn't stopped the Soviet Unionfrom stockpiling record amounts ofnuclear weapons. With another wave, Dr. Manhattan DETONATES the warhead in anexplosion of . LEAVES? Colors as brilliant as thenortheastern autumn MCLAUGHLINYou don't think it's all just posturing?ELEANOR CLIFTSome in other parts of the world mightthink we're posturing, parading this reallife superhero around. Maybe the reasonwhy the Soviets are doing these bombtests is because they feel threatened byDr. Manhattan, cornered. Maybe the wholeworld feels like that.

3.CONTINUED: ( 2 )Blake snorts as he sits on the couch, changes the channel-CRASH!--The FRONT DOOR EXPLODES, splintered by a KICK; Blakejumps up, immediately at the ready---when we see the INTRUDER'S FEET entering. With sudden, blinding speed, Blake WHIPSthe SAUCER from under his cup, sending it FLYING like a sawblade. The Intruder BATS IT out of the air with even quickerreflexes, but the act buys Blake time to get to the .45. He'sa pro . . . . but so is our Intruder. Before Blake can get a shotoff, the Intruder is already upon him, SNATCHING the gun outof Blake's hand---Blake PUNCHES the Intruder in the chest--the Intruder dropsthe gun. Blake fights. Not like an old man, but like thetrained killer he is. But the Intruder is much, much faster.Younger. Deadlier. SMASHING Blake with an elbow to the head.Blake falls. BLOOD blurs his vision. The Intruder picks Blakeup off the ground. Brings him to the window with the greatNew York view. Thirty stories up. Blake looks the Intruder inthe eye and starts laughing. Hysterical.BLAKE (CONT'D)You'll never pull it off . He laughs. The INTRUDER seems to regard Blake a moment---then, with incredible strength, he LIFTS BLAKE OVER HISHEAD AND THROWS BLAKE THROUGH THE WINDOW. Blake never makes asound as he plummets to the sidewalk.EXT. STREET - DAYCLOSE ON: Blake's dead body. His eyes are wide open, not infear, but in resignation. Dan picks itup, runs his fingers over the RED-BROWN SPLOTCH.DANThis little stain, is that bean juice or-RORSCHACHHuman bean juice. Badge belonged to theComedian. Blood too. He's dead.DANThe Comedian?Nervous now, Dan glances out the window.DAN (CONT'D)Let's talk downstairs.

12.INT. DAN'S HOUSE - HALLWAY - LATE NIGHT/EARLY MORNINGRorschach follows Dan to a CLOSET, at the end of the hall.Dan opens the closet, revealing an old BOOKSHELF. With somedifficulty, Dan PULLS OPEN the HINGED BOOKSHELF with a RUSTYCREAK. STEEL STAIRS lead down into the dark.INT. I heard he was working forthe government. Maybe it was a politicalkilling.RORSCHACHMaybe. Or maybe someone's decided to killoff costumed heroes.DANYou don't think that's . . . a littleparanoid?RORSCHACHIs that what they're saying about me now? That I'm paranoid?DANI'm just saying the Comedian made a lotof enemies over the years, even amongsthis friends, if he had any. The manwasn't exactly endearing. Just becausesomething happened to him doesn't mean itinvolves us.

13.CONTINUED:RORSCHACHEven if we theorize the Comedian waskilled for political purposes, thatdoesn't mean we're exempt. Our owngovernment attacked us through the KeeneAct. One of our own has been murdered. Ithought you might be interested. Anattack on one is an attack on all of us,right?Dan hesitates.DANI'm out, Rorschach. I've been out, we'veall been out. Except you. You know that.RORSCHACHYes. I know that. Anyways, I thought I'dlet you know. Just in case.DANYeah, thanks. I assure youhe'll see me.Dan glares at her. She glares right back. A game of chicken. She reluctantly gets up, goes inside the office.Once she's gone, Dan's glare disappears, replaced bynervousness. Picks up a Forbes magazine with Adrian on the cover.DOUG ,ROTHMr. Veidt, would you acknowledge that youare considered the world's smartest man?ADRIAN(laughs)I think it's better to be the world'smost modest man. You should ignore my PRpeople, they tend to be a little tooenthusiastic.ANNIE LEIBOWITZ(interjecting)Why don't you take your shirt off?She photographs Adrian as he unbuttons his shirt . we seehis perfect chiseled frame--Adrian is a physical specimen.DOUG ROTH(continuing)If we could move off the subject ofbusiness for a moment, I'm curiouswhether the world's smartest man thinkswe're headed for our next World War.At the other end of the room, Dan re ds the Forbes article onAdrian. There is a photo of Adrian in costume and a photo ofhim and Dr. Manhattan in suits, shaking hands.ADRIANPredicting stock prices isn't the same aspredicting world events. I hope thereisn't a war with the Soviets, or even askirmish for that matter. Because VeidtEnterprises has some exciting plans, plans that will, pardon the cliche, trulymake this world a better place. My teamof engineers and scientists have beenworking with Dr. Manhattan himself onsynthesizing a new, cheap form of energywhich will eliminate the worlds relianceon fossil fuels with no toxic emissions. This energy could power cars, aircrafts,stadiurns--the possibilities are endless-(MORE)(CONTINUED)

Is everycompany in North America listed?ASSISTANTYes, we'll start working on Europetomorrow. She leaves as Adrian picks up the phone. He speaks inflawless Spanish, and then:ADRIAN(on phone)Yes, General, I can extend your country aline of credit but I am concerned thatthe Unidad Popular is gaining politicalmomentum. 17.CONTINUED:Adrian continues in Spanish and then hangs up, turns to Dan.ADRIAN (CONT'D)Chilean Spanish--such a bastardization ofthe language.(back on track)So is that why you came to see me? You'reworried about this mask killer theoryRorschach's pushing?DANYou're the world's smartest man, Adrian. You tell me.ADRIANRorschach's a sociopath suffering throughnostalgia. The Comedian had tons ofenemies, political, criminal, personal.Sure, he was part of our . fraternity, but the man was practically aNazi. It's nothing I'd lose sleep over.Adrian notices the news on one of his TV projectors: Membersof the Soviet Army at the firing range. Taped to the head oftheir targets are photos of the head of Dr. Manhattan.ADRIAN (CONT'D)No, there are other things in the worldI'm far more concerned about.DANIf the Russians launch their nukes, Joncould stop them all. Couldn't he?ADRIANActually, no. The latest intelligencereports show that the Soviets have over51,000 nuclear warheads stockpiled. Let'ssay our military could intercept oraffect 64% of those--which is a generousestimate--that still leaves over 18,000warheads that could be launched at us.Out of those, let's s on c);,uld stop97% of them, that mea5400 uclearwarheads would still re h oµr soil-depending on certain vari b1es, thatmight be enough to effectively endorganic life in America. I think theSoviets are realizing that even Jon can'tbe everywhere at once.

TheCIA suspects it was KGB.Dr. Manhattan shrinks from sixty to six feet in size. Hespeaks in a cold, even, matter of fact manner.RORSCHACHKGB could be after us all. Butneither of you seem too concerned.DR. MANHATTANA live human body and a dead human bodyhave the same number of particles.structurally there's no difference.LAURIEWell, I might not be able to count atoms, but either way, Blake was a bastard.
