Install multiple communication-interfacemodules into the ControlLogix backplane to configure a gateway to bridge or route control and information data betweendifferent networks. You do not need a ControlLogix controller in the chassis.

1756 ControlLogix Communication Modules SpecificationsAdditional ResourcesThese documents contain additional information concerning related products from Rockwell Automation.ResourceDescriptionEtherNet/IP Modules Installation Instructions, publication ENET-IN002Provides information on installing EtherNet/IP modules.EtherNet/IP Secure Communication User Manual, publication ENET-UM003Provides information on system architecture, configuring secure communication, anddiagnostics.Industrial Automation Wiring and Grounding Guidelines, publication 1770-4.1.Provides general guidelines for installing a Rockwell Automation industrial system.Product Certifications website, http://www.ab.comProvides declarations of conformity, certificates, and other certification details. You can view or download publications at http://www.rockwellautomation.com/literature/. To order paper copies oftechnical documentation, contact your local Allen-Bradley distributor or Rockwell Automation sales representative.Studio 5000 EnvironmentThe Studio 5000 Engineering and Design Environment combines engineering and design elements into a commonenvironment. The first element in the Studio 5000 environment is the Logix Designer application. The Logix Designerapplication is the rebranding of RSLogix 5000 software and will continue to be the product to program Logix5000 controllers for discrete, process, batch, motion, safety, and drive-based solutions. The Studio 5000 environment is the foundation for the future of Rockwell Automation engineering design tools andcapabilities. This environment is the one place for design engineers to develop all of the elements of their control system.2Rockwell Automation Publication 1756-TD003F-EN-E - December 2013

1756 ControlLogix Communication Modules SpecificationsCommunication ConnectionsA ControlLogix system uses connections to establish communication links between devices. The types of connectionsinclude the following: Controller-to-local I/O modules or local communication modules Controller-to-remote I/O or remote communication modules Controller-to-remote I/O (rack-optimized) modules Produced and consumed tags Messages Controller access with the Studio 5000 environment Controller access with RSLinx software for HMI or other applicationsYou indirectly determine the number of connections the controller uses by configuring the controller to communicate withother devices in the system. The limit of connections may ultimately reside in the communication module you use for theconnection. If a message path routes through a communication module, the connection related to the message also countstowards the connection limit of that communication module.EtherNet/IP NetworkThe Ethernet Industrial (EtherNet/IP) network protocol is an open industrial-networking standard thatsupports both real-time I/O messaging and message exchange. The EtherNet/IP network usesoff-the-shelf Ethernet communication chips and physical media. If you need toSelect this interface Control I/O modules and drives1756-EN2F bridge1756-EN2T bridge1756-ENBT bridge Act as an adapter for I/O on remote EtherNet/IP links Communicate with other EtherNet/IP devices (messages and HMI) Bridge EtherNet/IP links to route messages to devices on other networksSupport device level ring (DLR) and linear topologies1756-EN2TR redundant bridge1756-EN3TR redundant bridge Provide control in environments where temperatures range from -25 70 C (-13 158 F)1756-EN2TXT bridge Support device level ring (DLR) and linear topologies Provide control in environments where temperatures range from -25 70 C (-13 158 F)1756-EN2TRXT redundant bridgeSecure access to a control system from within the plant network1756-EN2TSC bridge Use an Internet browser to remotely access tags in a ControlLogix controller1756-EWEB web server Communicate with other EtherNet/IP or generic Ethernet devices (messaging only; no I/O control) Bridge EtherNet/IP links to route messages to devices on other networks4Rockwell Automation Publication 1756-TD003F-EN-E - December 2013

1756 ControlLogix Communication Modules SpecificationsControlNet NetworkThe ControlNet network is an open, control network for real-time, high-throughput applications. TheControlNet network uses the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) to combine the functionality of an I/O networkand a peer-to-peer network providing high-speed performance for both functions. The ControlNet network givesyou deterministic, repeatable transfers of all mission-critical control data in addition to supporting transfers ofnon-time-critical data. I/O updates and controller-to-controller interlocking always take precedence over programuploads and downloads, and messaging. If your application requiresSelect this interface128 ControlNet connections per communication module1756-CN2/B1756-CN2R/B1756-CN2RXT/BControl in environments where temperatures range from-25 70 C (-13 158 F)1756-CN2RXT40 48 ControlNet connections per communication module1756-CNB1756-CNBRConnect to Other Devices via a ControlNet NetworkThe Studio 5000 environment supports a generic ControlNet module that allows connections to ControlNet nodes forwhich there is no specific support currently available in the programming software. A module configured as a genericControlNet module communicates with the controller in the form of input, output, status, and configuration tags. For example, use the generic module configuration to set up communication between a ControlLogix controller and a1203-CN1 ControlNet communication module. Then use the CIP generic MSG instruction type to send and receivemessages from the 1203-CN1 module.Table 7 - Technical Specifications - 1756 ControlNet ndantControlNet communication rate5 MbpsLogix communication connections12840 48Connections supported, max131(3)64Number of nodes, max99Current draw @ 5.1V DC1100 mACurrent draw @ 24V DC3 mAPower dissipation5.7 W6.7 W5.1 WThermal dissipation19.5 BTU/hr22.9 BTU/hr17.4 BTU/hrIsolation voltageStandard: 30V (continuous), basic insulation type, ControlNet network to backplaneRedundant: 30V (continuous), basic insulation type, ControlNet A/B to backplane, and ControlNet A to ControlNet BNo isolation between NAP or USB and backplaneType tested at 500V AC for 60 sWeight, approx.0.26 kg (0.57 lb)1300 mA970 mA1.7 mA0.293 kg (0.64 lb)0.26 kg (0.57 lb)Rockwell Automation Publication 1756-TD003F-EN-E - December 20130.293 kg (0.64 lb)11
