MCO OER Report – Summer 20192018-2019This report reviews the usage of Open Educational Resources (OER) at Michigan community colleges for thesummer 2019 semester and final review of 2018-19. Along with the number of colleges, courses and students,the report estimates the total cost of savings to students for those classes where OER are used. The MCO OERSteering Committee agreed in fall 2016 to determine cost savings for students based on the multiplier of 100per student. This multiplier is a common method used throughout the nation to reflect the multiple options such as purchasing used texts, rentals, e-textbooks, etc. - that students may/can use when purchasing a requiredtextbook. Because there may not be a commercial text by which we can compare savings to, this report willshow the estimated cost savings based on the 100 per student multiplier for each course.During summer 2019 semester, seventeen colleges reported usage of Open Educational Resources and low/nocost instructional materials to the Michigan Colleges Online. See listing below. The combined statewide savings to students for summer 2019 was 1,186,900 using the 100 multiplier for eachcourse enrollment. For 2018-2019, the total estimated savings is 7,476,600. This is an increase of 29% over2017-18 savings.
