April EditorialWe are being warned about imminent hosepipebans, solar flares are bombarding the planetand heavy rain showers have been falling overLondon. This can mean only one thing. British summertime has arrived. Did you remember to change theclocks on the 25th, or did you turn up for work onMonday and hour early? As it’s now officially summer time (yes I know it’scold), we have no excuse for leaving our cars in thegarage, unless of course your pride and joy happensto be spread around in various boxes. Those of uswith cars all bolted together with most of the bits inplace, should be out and about cruising the highwaysReceiving the Briault Trophy from Billand byways of the UK enjoying the pleasures of classicMcGovern, outright winner of threemotoring.British Touring Car ChampionshipsAs you will see in this month’s events section, there isThe Needham Awardplenty to do, in addition to which many of the regionalareas have their own schedule of events. Make surethat you contact your area rep to find out what’s goingon and if you have any interesting events coming up,do let us know.Do you ever look at the front of the magazine and think“I would like to see my car on the front cover.” Yes? Wellall you have to do is send me an image of your prideand joy and I’ll do my best to put it up there over thecoming months. The image has to be in colour, portraitand over 1mb in size (preferably bigger). It also helpsif the photo is clear, unless it is artistically blurred onpurpose. Once your car has been immortalised in print, you will receive a high resolution copy of the magazinecover which should be large enough for you to take toyour local printers to be blown up, should you wish to place it on your garage wall.I’ll now sit back in the sure knowledge that I will be inundated by all three of the photos whichwill be emailed to me.Gaps and I had a very enjoyable March and by some strange fluke we have managed to collectanother couple of bits of silverware. I think that one was for driving around more dangerouslythan other people. And the second one was possibly for having a car almost completely heldtogether by dirt which looked like it was going to disintegrate at any moment but actuallydidn’t. Either way, were feeling pretty pleased withourselves if not a little surprised. The deadline for articlesHave a great month and what ever you do, don’t forget toand reports for inclusion inwrite a few words about it for next month’s magazine.next month’s magazine isFriday 13th of AprilGary & GapsThe statements and opinions expressed in each and every issue of the MASCOT are not necessarilythe considered views of the Midget and Sprite Club. A Sprite of Many(additional) PartsYPart 2 (The Interior)ou may remember (and how could youforget) the “augmented” Mk1 Spritewhich appeared on page 16 of lastmonth’s MASCOT. In part one, I describeda few of the added extras which appearedon the exterior of Reg Imry’s Exeter basedFrogeye. The fact that I can now tell youthe owner’s name is thanks to Spridgetexpert Mike Authers (read more about Regand his vehicles in the Letters pages of thismonth’s magazine). This month I concludemy description by highlighting more of thishighly individual car’s interior features. Someof which may be useful aids to driver andpassenger comfort and safety. And someless so. Hold on tight here we go in noparticular order.Sticking out through the rear shroud, wehave a pair of chrome roll bars. I have no ideawhether they have any structural rigidity, butin the event of the car ending up the wrongway up, the fact they are below the level ofthe headrests means that they would providenext to no driver (and passenger protection). The adjustable headrests themselves look tobe bolted to the underside of the rear shroud. However, I may be wrong on that. The seatslook like very nice period buckets seats.Perhaps the eagle eyed among you can puta name to them. There also looks to be aracing harness fitted. The centre console has three switchesand a round thing. “Round thing” isn’t themanufacturer’s official name for it, it’s justthat I have no idea what it might be for.Moving forward we see a chromium platedgearlever turret, embellished by a laterrubber gaiter and a “T” shaped gearknob, whilst tuck to the side is what looks to me likea chrome ashtray. The inside of the doors have pull handles, padded pockets and the passenger door hasanother ashtray. The windscreen has Perspex sun visors/winddeflectors which really are a really usefuladdition. There are two rear view mirrors, one with its own anti dazzle filter and a veryrare period Helphos spot lamp, beloved of1960s rally drivers.Moving on to the dashboard, the fun reallystarts. As well as the usual four clocks.Speedo rev-counter, fuel gauge and dualwater/oil gauge. I have counted an additionalten gauges and clocks. Some of which Irecognise such as a Vacuum gauge, an Ampmeter and a clock. The other seven are a bitof a mystery to my untrained eye. I can countseven dashboard knobs on top of the usualHeater, Washer, Wiper and Starter knobs anda couple of extra switches thrown in for goodmeasure. There looks to be four separateinterior lights including the map reading light,a push button radio, an extra dashboard grabhandle on the drivers side (perhaps as an aidto getting in and out) and finally a very niceperiod Formula Steering Wheel. The car really is a tour de force and clearlythe owner has spent many years getting itexactly as he wanted it. I’m not quite surehow the battery and dynamo handles all theadditional electrics, perhaps it has more thanone battery. I’d also be intrigued to see whatlies under the bonnet. Maybe a supercharger, which would definitely explain the purpose ofat least one of the additional clocks. Perhapssomeone out there has the answer?Once again my thanks to John Short, forpermission to reproduce his photograph.Gary7

IFrogeyeWindscreen WasherBottle HolderFrogeye windscreenwasher bottlewas recently asked where someone mightbuy a new windscreen washer bottle holderfor a Frogeye Sprite restoration project.Well, a well known parts supplier lists thebracket at 27.50p and the plastic washerbottle at a staggering 30.60p. I should atthis stage point out that the Frogeye Spritehas a quart water bottle as opposed to themore common half pint bottle.I offered to fabricate the bracket which Imade out of three strips of steel – two at12 x ½ inch and one at 20 x ¾ inch. Thelengths allow fortrimming.I had some sheetsteel in thegarage but if youcannot find someat a local supplierthen discardedwashingmachines orclothing lockersare about thecorrect gauge ofsteel. Waste not, want not, andrecycle as Granused to say!I had a templateDrilling mount holemade from a coathanger that I usedpreviously to make a holder for my Sebringreplica so if you fancy making a holderfor yourself then just ask a Frogeye Spriteowner if you can bend a template copyingthe original. Using the template the 20 x ¾strip is bent to shape. I used a vice and someodd bits of wood lying around the bench asformers. The photographsmost probablyshow, far betterthan I candescribe in words, how the strips areassembled. Finalassembly needstack welding withgas or Mig or aspot welder butask around at anyclub meet and youare sure to findFinished Frogeyesomeone who canwindscreen washer bottleweld for you.viewed from insideTry an auto jumblefor the bottle, they can sometimes be had forpennies rather than pounds, which is how Icame by the last one I bought.Alan AnsteadPrior to welding9

Lopsided DebateThe GreatOn the left is Rick Bastedo’s 1964 MK2 Sprite and on the right isa '69 Sprite belonging to Bill Masquelier. Image Rick BastedoIseem to have been drawn into the debateon front sidelight/indicator light unit height.Spridgley thing folklore would have usbelieve that the light units were droppedaround an inch lower beneath the headlightunits upon the introduction of the HAN10/GAN5 facelift versions. A slimmer frontbumper dictating that the lights be loweredto even up the aesthetics. The sidelight unitswere in fact repositioned prior to this, fromHAN9-77591, GAN4-66226 (December 1968).The facelift HAN10/GAN5 did not appear untilOctober 1969. Certainly, some productionchanges saw a period of overlap as revisionswere introduced. Somehow, a period ofaround 9 months seems excessive for thesidelights to be lowered in readiness for thefacelift’s slimmer front bumper.I must confess that I believe there wasanother reason but I know not what. Tohazard a guess, probably a change in NorthAmerican lighting regulations. At the sametime (December 1968) the Midget lost thebonnet centre chrome strip. Rumour hasit that a frontal impact test saw the trimstrip forced through the windscreen. Safetyconscious U.S.A. then demanding it to bedeleted. North American regulations generallygoverned the way in which Spridgley thingswere to evolve from the late 1960s so I thinkthere may be the real answer. On a defensive note concerning CliveWagstaff’s mineral blue Sprite on page 86of Original Sprite & Midget – yes, it did slipthrough the net. I failed to spot it beforegoing to press, so did Clive. I caught up withClive some months later at an event andconfessed my lack of attention. Clive gaveme a funny look, gave his Sprite a funny look– and groaned. He had not noticed either. He spent the rest of the day sat on the frontwing hiding the cause of the embarrassment.Certainly, Clive was not alone, for someyears, the early ‘high light’ wing was notavailable from stock and so lopsidedSpridgley things were not at all an uncommonsight.Editor Gary sprang to my defence inthe March edition, saying I was ‘young, impressionable and needed the money’. Twoout of three is still true – I will leave you towork that out.Terry Horler (Age 63)11

Note another of Alan’s cleverideas, a spare coil alreadybolted inside the engine bayUnder Bonnet Toolboxfor Mk1 & 2 Sprite and Midget Mk1From the very first time that I saw Alan’sSprite with its bonnet up, I have admiredhis ingenious method of storing “extrastuff” in the engine bay, where it is so easilyaccessible yet doesn’t interfere with themechanical bits or detract from the look ofthe engine bay. In fact I’d go so far as to saythat it makes the under bonnet area lookmore functional.Sprites and Midgets don’t have a lot of spacefor luggage, especially if the spare wheel iscarried.I am sure to attract bad luck now but neverin all my travels abroad, over the years, haveI had to use the spare tyre. But I would feelnaked and vulnerable if I left it at home. Icould take a can of the stuff you inject intoa flat tyre but again, I would rather keep to aspare wheel. It’s not so bad travelling alone but bringalong ‘her indoors’ and she thinks we areemigrating. This she needs and that in case, that as a spare, again in case the formergets dirty or perhaps subject to some otherdisaster, this for a warm day, that for a coldevening, another (for an arctic convoy?) andshe must take that in case we meet royalty.Pyjamas in case of a stay in hospital! I doobject to finding room for the tiara!Perhaps if BMC hadn’t been so keen to keepcosts down, they may have even consideredadding the tool box inside the engine bay ofthe early Sprites and Midgets. I would guesshowever, that the reason that it was neverfitted as standard is simply that no one otherthan Alan has ever thought of the idea before. So I asked him if he would be kind enough towrite a small article about his under bonnettoolbox (let’s hope that yet another can ofworms hasn’t been opened here.)12

All that stuff rammed into the boot and nothalf of it will be worn. It will all have to comeout if I need the spare wheel which will beburied beneath it. What if I want to top up theengine oil or brake fluid? So where do I put the spares and some oil fortop ups on our marathon adventure. Addingmy 10% of luggage, for that is all I can nowfit in. There is little room for ought else. If Ican fit anything else in it will be in the furthestdepths of the Frogeye boot and do rememberthat the Frogeye has no boot lid so that sparewheel, luggage, and anything else has to beremoved, and loaded, from behind the foldforward seats. To reach fully into the blackhole, that is a Frogeye boot, requires theagility of Houdini and the mining expertise ofa ‘Bevan Boy’.So where else can we look t
