NXNX Mach Series Machiningsolutions capabilitiesNX Mach Series Machining solutionsprovide all the tools you need to create, refine and optimize NC tool paths aswell as state-of-the-art solutions forprogressive die and mold design. Fromgeometry import through simulation andpostprocessing, these solutions delivercomprehensive NC programming plusmold and die design capabilities in a fullyintegrated system.Data translationAll of the NX Mach Series Machiningsolutions include data exchange tools forimporting CAD part geometry from a broadrange of sources. NX machining worksdirectly with NX geometric models, and isassociatively interoperable with modelscreated with NX I-deas software or SolidEdge software. Since NX is built withSiemens PLM Software’s Parasolid software modeling kernel, the de factoindustry standard, it also easily readsParasolid data from many CAD systems. NXalso translates data from several standardexchange and neutral formats, includingIGES, STEP 203 and 214, DXF and DWG.In addition, the NX machining solutionscan readily interface with resource librariesof cutters, feeds and speeds and machinetool information. The interface enablesprogrammers to search, review andretrieve resource information through NXquery dialogs.Assembly modeling and basic modelediting tools All NX Mach SeriesMachining solutions also include theassembly modeling capabilities needed forbuilding fixturing and robust setupenvironements. In addition, the tools areprovided to edit models in order toimprove the NC programming process.Surface extension and patching tools areprovided, as well as other geometryextractions, including synchronousmodeling capabilities.Fixed-axis millingPlanar milling – NX Mach Series Machiningsolutions support planar milling operationsincluding multiple-pass profiling andfollow pocketing, and include three linearmotion area clearance routines. Thesoftware automatically creates tool pathsfor predrilling holes and machining aroundmultiple islands.Core and cavity milling – creates toolpaths for fixed-axis core and cavity milling. The tool paths remove volumes of materialin planar layers that are perpendicular tothe fixed tool axis. This type of machiningoperation is most commonly used to roughout material from cores and cavities inpreparation for finishing. Multiple cuttertrajectory options are available, as wellas control for high speed machining.Initial stock material and in-processmaterial can be used to define machiningregions, thereby avoiding unnecessarycutter moves.Programmers using any of the NX MachSeries Machining solutions can also selectparts from NX assembly models formachining.NC tool path creation and programmingGeneral NC programming tools All NXMach Series Machining solutions includetools for creating and editing NC programs. The base capability enables programmersto edit cutter location source files, toreorder tool paths within the cutterlocation files and to program point-topoint, drive curve machining and drilling. In addition, programmers can graphicallydisplay NX tool paths and upon selectionof a graphical element, can edit thegraphical component or its correspondingtextual representation (GOTO statements).selects machining methods appropriate toeach feature type, applying templates, rules and machining parameters automat ically. Automated tool path creation thencreates the tool paths, selects tools andoptimizes the paths for tool type and toolpath length. Output includes the final NXprogram and associated shopdocumentation.Machining wizard builder All of the NXMach Series Machining solutions include amachining wizard builder. This capabilityenables companies to capture standardmachining procedures and company bestpractices in step-by-step wizards that helpautomate NC programming. The customwizards can be re-used throughout thecompany to assist less experiencedprogrammers and to promote standard ization of NC machining practices.Feature-based machining The NX MachSeries Machining solutions automate NCprogramming with feature-basedmachining, which can reduce programmingtime and effort by 90 percent. Featurebased machining auto matically recognizesmachining features in the part model andsorts them by feature type. NX CAM thenFixed-axis surface milling – enables 3-axismachining of surfaces and solids. NXincludes a broad selection of drivemethods including boundary, radial cut, spiral cut and user-defined. Boundary drivemethods offer cut patterns that includeconcentric and radial patterns. Thesoftware features controls for upward anddownward cutting and helical engages, and geometry creation to identify uncut orcleanup areas.Facet machining – creates tool pathsfor machining faceted models such as STL(rapid prototyping format) or Parasolidfaceted bodies. This capability can beused in reverse engineering fromscanned models.

NXFlow cut milling – generates fixed contourtool paths along concave corners andvalleys formed by part surfaces. NXautomatically determines the direction andorder of the flow cuts using rules based onmachining best practices. The resultingtool path is optimized to maintain toolcontact with the part and minimize noncutting moves. Manual assembly isavailable for the cases where humanintervention can improve the results.NURBS path generation – provides amachine control dialog with an option foroutput of nonuniform rational B-spline(NURBS) tool path, the application code forthe generation of the tool path and thenecessary enhancements to postprocessthe new format. The format is supportedby machine controllers that have NURBSinterpolation option.Five-axis machiningSequential milling – NX includes tool pathcreation for machining a series of edge-toedge surfaces (sheets or faces) insuccession. This sequential millingcapability is used to finish surfaces oncethe area has been roughed out with planaror cavity milling. The software creates toolpaths that carefully follow surfacecontours using three-, four- or five-axistool movements while exercising a highdegree of control over each tool move.Variable-axis milling and profiling – NXsupports both fixed and multi-axis millingfunctions on any NX part surfaces.Programmers can specify full 3- to 5-axiscontouring motion, tool orientation andquality of surface finish. Tool paths may becontrolled by surface parameters, byprojecting tool paths onto the surface andby arbitrary cures or points.TurningNX packages include a comprehensiveturning solution that is easy enough to useon simple programs and capable enoughto tackle your toughest geometry in multispindle, multi-turret applications.Turbomachinery milling – NX providesspecialized operations to addressturbomachinery components wheremultiple blades are arrayed on a hub, suchas impellers, turbines, fans, etc. 5 Axisroughing and finishing strategies quicklymachine even the most challengingconfigurations. The specialized operationsare even tolerant of geometry stitchingerrors in imported data, making theproduction of these components the mosttrouble-free available.NX creates tool paths for profile contourmilling operations that semi-finish andfinish walls. The software defines the toolaxis so that the cutter removes materialwith its side only. For example, uponselection of a cavity floor, the software willcreate tool paths for all the wallssurrounding the floor in that region. Ifmultiple floors are selected in a singleoperation, then all the surrounding wallswill be machined.Wire EDMNX CAM solutions can create tool paths forwire electrical discharge machining ofparts in 2- through 4-axis mode. Thesoftware works with parts defined inwireframe or solid geometry. It supports arange of wire EDM operations includingmulti-pass profiling, wire reversing andarea removal.Multi-function machine synchronizationHarness the power of multi-functionmachine tools with a graphical means ofdisplaying an unlimited number ofchannels, with scrolling code in a choice offormats, time displays and functions to addwait and sync codes. The SynchronizationManager is directly linked to the internalpostprocessor and runs from postedoutput for the greatest accuracy.NX automates tool path creation formachining holes, pockets and faces withfeature-based machining. This advancedcapability automatically recognizesfeatures in NX design models, includinguser-defined features and geometry items

NXwith machining feature attributes. Thesoftware applies templates with predefined processes for each feature typeand rules for adjusting the process forspecific geometry and material conditions.According to the rules, multiple operationsare provided for machining the features, including tool selection and parametersettings. An optimization procedureconsolidates tool selections and optimizestool motions across the feature sets.Machining simulation and tool pathverificationToolpath verification – all NX Mach SeriesMachining solutions provide visualizationcapabilities that display, animate and verifyNX tool paths for milling and turning. Thevisualization enables shaded display andstorage of the in-process workpiece andstandard display of the tool path andholder with gouge detection. The softwareanimates the material removal process andprovides analysis tools for remainingmaterial and undercutting.to create and simulate customizedmachine tool/controller combinations. Thesoftware simulates tool paths and machinetool G and M code programs. Custommachines can be stored and retrieved inoptional Siemens library tools. Plus, specialtools are provided to build completekinematic machine tool models.PostprocessingPost builder – all NX Mach SeriesMachining solutions include an interactivepostprocessor generator that creates NCpostprocessing programs used to producemachine-specific output from NX toolpaths. Standard milling, drilling andturning machines are supported. Thepostprocessor development tools includeWindows-like structures with drag-anddrop options for defining the postpro cessor parameters. In addition, the outputcan be manually modified by users withprogramming experience to extend thepostprocessing features. Postpro cessorscan be executed to convert NX tool pathsto machine-ready programs.Design and draftingSeveral of the NX Mach Series Machiningpackages include powerful design toolsfor a complete CAD/CAM solution. Machining metals follows a predictable pattern with minimal creep. When machining plastics, quick adjustments must be made to accommodate substantial creep — not to mention that the material has a strong propensity for chipping and melting during machining. Simply stated, the basic principles of machining metals do not apply when machining
