DO YOU PRACTICE THE 10/5 RULE?Volunteers have a wonderful opportunity to connect with their patients, families and visitors by using the 10/5 rule.We encourage you to make eye contact when someone is within 10 feet of you and to greet themwhen they are within 5 feet of you. This practice will go a long way to install a positive firstimpression for the thousands of guests we serve each year.Make an emotional connection! “People won’t remember what you say, people won’t rememberwhat you do, but people will always remember how you made them feel.” -Maya AngelouThe Health Information Privacy and Portability Act(HIPPA)The 1996 law established privacy and security protections for patients health and demographicinformation in all forms– paper, verbal and electronic. What does this mean for UnityPoint Healthvolunteers? We must continue to be diligent about safeguarding patient information. Please review thefollowing checklist:I do not leave patient information (reports, documents, patient charts) face up in public areas.I discard patient information by shredding or placing it in a covered recycling bin.I do not discuss patient information in public areas where my voice can be overheard.(elevators, cafeteria, lobby, gift shop, ect.)I only access, discuss, use or disclose patient information on a “need to know” basis.Patient information must never be the subject of casual conversation. (Gossip is not professional)Patient information is accessed only as required by my volunteer placement responsibilities.I wear my Volunteer ID badge every time I volunteer (above the waist).I log off all clinical or non-clinical computer applications after I am finished.I do not leave any patient information on fax machines or copiers.I will notify Volunteer Services , my unit supervisor, if I observe a breach in confidentiality.AIDET Training for volunteers has begun! Why do we use AIDET?It reduces patient anxietyIt increases patient complianceIt improves clinical outcomesIt increases patient satisfactionWhat are the 5 Fundamentals ofPatient Communication?AIDET .Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration,Explanation and Thank youTaking the Introduction to the Next Level:Think about how you can manage up yourself. Take sometime to think about your own keep words for introducingand managing up yourself. For example: job title, certification, years of experience, any special training, etc.5
