www.TheExaminerNews.com3September 1 - September 7, 2020State Teachers Union Calls for Mandatory Mask Use in SchoolsBy Martin WilburThe state teachers’ union last weekdemanded that all districts require students, teachers and staff to wear face masks inschool virtually all the time to minimize thetransmission of COVID-19.New York State United Teachers (NYSUT),along with President of the AmericanFederation of Teachers Randi Weingarten, called on state lawmakers and Gov. Cuomoto make mask wearing mandatory exceptfor socially distanced breaks and for medicalissues.NYSUT President Andrew Pallotta saidwhile the state has strongly recommendedthat masks be used there are dozens ofdistricts that are treating the guidance asoptional.“We need to get this right and there’s noroom for mistakes,” Pallotta said. “Mistakesmay cost lives, and we must err on the sideof caution. We also must be clear and conciseabout what that means.”Weingarten called out several of the morethan 200 school districts throughout thestate that have failed to adopt mandatorymask policies. Most are upstate, includingCairo-Durham in Greene County, WatkinsGlen and numerous school systems in theFinger Lakes region, she said. There areabout 700 public school districts across NewYork. While opponents of mandatory maskwearing have argued that children arefar less likely to face serious healthconsequences because of COVID-19, thevirus can be transmitted to adult relativesor members of the faculty and staff at schooleven youngsters are asymptomatic.Weingarten said that in some areasthe use of face coverings is being viewedthrough a political lens, rather than a publichealth matter.“When you see these examples of ignoringor defying the mask issue, which is absolutelythe foremost safeguard, then you know, unfortunately, this needs to be a mandateinstead of simply strongly recommended,”said Weingarten, who pointed to the state ofConnecticut and many areas in Pennsylvaniathat are requiring mandatory mask use.Dr. Ken Spaeth, chief of occupationalenvironmental medicine at NorthwellHealth, said with the absence of a vaccine ortreatments for the virus, the simple step ofwearing a mask can go a long way.“I think at this point it goes withoutsaying, it’s simply six feet, that use of masksand social distancing are the most effectivetools we have to have any effective infectioncontrol,” he said. “In places where these areutilized, you see good control, and in placeswhere these are not utilized that’s whereyou tend to see (transmission) rates goingup. In a school community, indoors, I thinka reasonable approach here is to mandatemasks and to maintain social distance.”Wearing masks and maintaining socialdistance is no small task, particularly whenteaching younger children, said Pallotta, whostarted his career as a kindergarten teacher.State Records 100,000 Tests in OneDayResults from just over 100,000 tests werereceived on Saturday statewide, the firsttime since the start of the COVID-19 crisisin March, that New Yorkrecorded that manytests in a single day.Of the 100,022 tests, there were 698 positiveresults accounting fora nearly 0.7 percenttransmission rate.In Westchester, through Saturday, therewere 496 active cases and 37 COVID-19related hospitalizations. During the pastweek, two additional deaths were recordedin Westchester. On Sunday, New York recorded a statewiderate of just under 1 percent, according tothe state’s coronavirus dashboard.
