VSCS.Dr. Barton graduated from Missouri andthen completed her residency in ClinicalPathology here at Texas A&M University.She is currently a professor at Texas A&M.Her clinical interests include oncology andher scholarly interests are aspirationcytology and small animal reproduction.Dr. Steven Brinsko, DVM, M.S., Ph.D.,DACT - Professor of EquineTheriogenology.Dr. Brinsko received his DVM from theUniversity of Florida in 1985. He completeda combined residency and Master’s Degreeprogram in Theriogenology at Texas A&Min 1990, followed by a PhD from Cornell in1995. He is currently Professor ofTheriogenology at Texas A&M University.He has been an invited speaker atnumerous national and internationalmeetings and has authored or co-authoredover 100 manuscripts related to the field ofreproduction. He is a past president of theAmerican College of Theriogenologists andis the Chair of the TheriogenologyFoundation’s Research Grant Committee.Kristen Childress – Vet Anesthesia TechII.She got her first job at the VeterinaryMedical Teaching Hospital teaching hospitalas a caretaker out of high school. Krisgraduated from Texas A&M University in1998 with a BS in Wildlife and Fisheries.After completing her degree, she startedworking in various private practices doingsmall and large animal primary care,surgery, and emergency and critical care.She returned to the VMTH in 2014 to theanesthesia service in the small animal clinic.She is currently working on her VeterinaryTechnician degree through a distancelearning program. She is a Diplomate of the AmericanCollege of Veterinary Surgeons. Her specialinterests include equine sports medicine,advanced diagnostic imaging, andorthopedics.Wendy Greathouse, VeterinaryTechnician IIIMrs. Greathouse graduated from TexasA&M University in 1997 with a Bachelor ofScience in Zoology. She has worked forTexas A&M Small Animal Hospital for 22years, in three different positions. Wendy iscurrently the Orthopedics ServiceTechnician. Her interests are teachingbandaging and canine behavior. She enjoysspending weekends with her three dogs andher husband, ScottDr. Justin Heinz - Clinical AssistantProfessorDr. Heinz graduated from Purdue Universityand went on to complete a small animalrotating internship at Louisiana StateUniversity, followed by his residency inemergency and critical care at Texas A&MUniversity. He also is a Diplomate of theAmerican College of Veterinary Emergencyand Critical Care. He currently works inemergency and critical care in theDepartment of Veterinary Small AnimalClinical Sciences. His interests include acutekidney injury and renal replacementtherapies, transfusion medicine,cardiopulmonary resuscitation and postarrest care, and sepsis.

Dr. Hoppesearned her Doctorate of VeterinaryMedicine from Oklahoma State Universityin 1993. Prior to that she worked as aregistered nurse for 10 years caring forhuman patients. She completed an avianmedicine and surgery residency in 1999 atNorth Carolina State University and becamea Diplomate of the American Board ofVeterinary Practitioners in avian practice in2000. She is a Past-President (2012-2013) ofthe Association of Avian Veterinarians, andis also an active member of the Associationof Exotic Mammal Veterinarians, theAssociation of Reptile and AmphibianVeterinarians and the American VeterinarySociety of Animal Behavior. Dr.Hoppesjoined the TAMU faculty in 2006 and herresearch interests include avian analgesiaand Avian Bornavirus in parrots through herwork at the Schubot Exotic Bird HealthCenter and exotic and avian behavior andenrichment.Sherri Jerzyk, Veterinary TechnicianJerzyk began her veterinary career in highschool through the Texas AgriculturalCooperative Education. She has workedmany aspects of veterinary medicineincluding kennel tech, primary veterinary,emergency, critical care, orthopedics,neurology, theriogenology, ophthalmology,and finally rehabilitation. Jerzyk becamecertified in canine rehabilitation in 2006from the Canine Rehabilitation Institute. Shehas started up 3 successful rehabilitationfacilities as well as assisted at the CanineRehabilitation Institute before coming toTexas A&M. She finds rehabilitation themost mentally challenging yet rewardingaspect of veterinary medicine.

Dr. Levine teaches professionaland graduate courses in veterinary clinicalpathology and has given over a dozencontinuing education lectures focused onsmall animal hematology and cytology.Thomas Koenig, Veterinary TechnicianIIITommy Koenig is a graduate of Texas StateTechnical Institute. He is a charter memberof the Academy of Veterinary DentalTechnicians (AVDT) and presently serveson its examination and educationcommittees. Koenig is a past vice-presidentand secretary of the Texas Association ofRegistered Veterinary Technicians(TARVT) and has served as secretary of theCapital Area Hospital ManagersAssociation.Dr. Gwendolyn J. Levine, DVM, BSBiology.Levine received her DVM from Texas A&MUniversity in 2006. She then completed arotating internship in Small AnimalMedicine and Surgery in 2007 and aresidency in Veterinary Clinical Pathologyin 2010. She joined the VeterinaryPathobiology Department at Texas A&MUniversity in 2010 after becoming boardcertified by the American College ofDr. Evelyn MacKay, DVM - Resident inLarge Animal Internal Medicine at TexasA&M University.She holds a BS from the University ofWisconsin-Madison and a DVM from theUniversity of Missouri. After an internshipat the Ohio State University she came toTexas A&M University as a Large AnimalInternal Medicine Resident.

VSCS.Dr. Mankin earned his B.A. from HendrixCollege and then continued school to earnhis DVM at the University of Tennessee.Afterwards, he then completed an internshipin small animal medicine at PurdueUniversity. He came back to Tennessee tocomplete his residency in neurology andneurosurgery. Mankin is currently a clinicalassociate professor at Texas A&MUniversity. His scholarly interests includeneuroradiology and neurosurgery.Jennifer Perkins, Veterinary TechnicianJennifer attended the University of Mainegraduating with a Bachelor of Science inzoology. After graduation Jennifer workedas a zookeeper at the Birmingham Zoo for ayear. Jennifer attended Medaille College in2006, graduating with an associate’s degreein veterinary technology and received herlicensure in the state of New York. In 2008she began working at a general small animalpractice until October 2012 when sheaccepted a position at Texas A&Mveterinary teaching hospital in thezoological medicine service. Jennifercurrently lives with her dog, Buddy.Dr. Kimberly Pope-Robinson, DVM,CCFPDr. Pope-Robinson graduated from UCDavis with her DVM degree and then wenton to practice in both the large and smallanimal sectors. In 2007 she transitionedfrom running a single veterinary practice tomanaging multiple veterinary hospitals for alarge corporate practice. She then worked inthe pharmaceutical sector as a RegionalStrategic Veterinarian where she primarilyworked with specialists and their teams.

Shortly thereafter, shebegan her veterinary medicine career at ahigh volume spay/neuter clinic in Brenham,Texas. While working there, she decided tofurther her career and knowledgebase bypursuing further coursework for vet schooland joining the team at Banfield in CollegeStation. Once again hoping to gain moreknowledge and experience, she joined theTexas A&M Small Animal HospitalAnesthesia team in March of 2018. Sincethen, she has been an active member in theVeterinary Emergency Team and has movedto the Oncology service as their in-houseveterinary anesthetist.Dr. Christine Rutter, DVM- ClinicalAssistant Professor. VSCS.Dr. Rutter graduated from Mississippi StateUniversity completed an internship inLouisville Kentucky and a residency at TuftsUniversity. She was in private specialtypractice for 6 years. Her interests includecoagulation, immune mediated blooddyscrasias, transfusion medicine, traumamanagement, post-operative patient care,and respiratory disease.Katrina L Schmitz, Veterinary Resident Emergency/Critical Care 2nd yearSchmitz’s appreciation for emergencymedicine started when she was a technicianat a busy emergency hospital on the centralcoast of California. She was accepted intoveterinary school at St. George's Universityin January 2012; final year was spent atNorth Carolina State University. Fromthere, Schmitz went back to California for arotating internship at VCA West LosAngeles; which led her to Texas A&M,where she is currently a resident in smallanimal emergency and critical caremedicine.

She spends her free timeriding and being with her family.Dr. Bradley Simon, MS, DVM, DACVAA- Assistant Professor. VSCS.Dr. Simon received his DVM from RossUniversity School of Veterinary Medicine,completed a residency in anesthesia andanalgesia at the University of Pennsylvania,and is a diplomat of the American Collegeof Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia(ACVAA). Dr. Simon has publishedmanuscripts pertaining but not limited toopioid analgesia, epidural anesthesia andanalgesia, oligoanalgesia in the emergencyand critical care department,benzodiazepines, pharmacokinetics, andacupuncture in a variety of journals.Jen Sowinski, BS- Equine Technician.Jen Sowinski, a New England native,graduated from Johnson & Wales Universityin Rhode Island, with a B.S. degree inEquine Business Management & Riding.She spent a few years in the northeast, ridingand re-purposing off-track thoroughbreds fornew careers before she found her way toTexas A&M. For the past 5 years she hasworked as a technician in our Equine SoftTissue Surgery department where sheDr. Stanley Sowy, Veterinary Resident Emergency/Critical Care 3rd yearDr. Stanley Sowy grew up in SouthernCalifornia and went to veterinary school atWestern University of Health Sciences inPomona. He completed a small animalrotating internship at the renowned AngellAnimal Medical Center in Boston MA andsubsequently completed a joint internalmedicine and emergency and critical careinternship at Gulf Coast VeterinarySpecialist in Houston before coming toTexas A&M for his emergency and criticalcare residency. His interests includetransfusion therapy, mechanical ventilationand small animal cardiopulmonaryresuscitation education.
