THE BEST OF BIMBest Student ProjectTHE TEAM OF THE YOUNGSTERSMODEL OF LODZ CITYGATE, POLANDWhat it is: An alternative version of the Lodz City Gate: a threepart, glass-covered office building with a public spaceLocation: : Lodz, Poland By: Students of Lodz University of TechnologySTUDENTS FOUNDTHE BEAUTY OF TEKLAVARIOUS DETAILS BRINGMULTIPLE CHALLENGESThe students of civil engineering, architecture andenvironmental engineering created an alternativeversion of the current gate: a three-part, glass-coveredoffice building including public space. Their structuralsolution is also architectural. Communication andcollaboration were central to the success of theproject: The team shared ideas, solved problems andfound new solutions when discussing the project. The building is divided into three parts, covered withglass elevation. The whole building was designed to makethe steel elements to be both the load-bearing structureas well as provide architectural value. In order to makea structure lighter, the students planned to use cellularbeams, which would also enable hiding the installationsand increase ceiling height. The shape of the openings wasinspired by the Angelina steel profile by Arcelor Mittal. The project comprises an underground railwaystation, new railway connections through the citycenter as well as an arts and cultural zone. Somezones are available for the public, and there isa viewing point at the top of the complex. The main challenge of the project lied in its variousdetails, as modeling joints took a lot of time and effortas the elements were at different angels. Almost each ofthe main joints needed to be made separately and couldnot be copied. Because of the sheer size of the building, avoiding and checking collisions took a lot of time.

Let thestudents talk“Thanks to the studentinternships, during which we hadan opportunity to work usingTekla, we could make our projectsuccessful. By sharing our ideas,we could easily solve problemsand think of new solutions. As weplanned the scheme of creatingthe project before we hadstarted, we were able to finish itin less than a month. Using toolssuch as phase manager allowedas to organize the work well.”

THE BEST OF BIMSpecial RecognitionIZMIT BAY SUSPENSION BRIDGEWhat it is: The fourth longest suspension bridge in the world witha central span of 1,550 meters and total length of 2682 metersLocation: Izmit Bay, Marmara sea, Turkey By: CIMTASLONG, LARGE, HIGHA total length of 2,682 meters, 566-meter side spans onboth sides; 18,000 tons of steel a total height of 252m.Three lanes of traffic (both ways!) and a total weightof 34,000 tons. Izmit Bay Crossing Suspension Bridgeis the world’s fourth longest suspension bridge.Throughout the project, fabrication tolerances wereextremely small. Straightforward modeling techniquesdidn’t suffice to properly show the real and requiredfabrication dimensions. Hence, the team decided tocreate two separate models, one model with fabricationdimensions and the other with added shrinkagevalues. In order to keep track of the two models, anexternal program was created using Tekla Open API.Image: Riza KayanBIM AND TEKLA STRUCTURESSPEEDING UP THE PROCESSFabrication of such a large scale project has to beconducted in different phases with careful planning andexecution. This requires all individual parts to be designedwithout a mistake, carefully tracked and inspectedfrom procurement to erection process. Throughout theprocess, the model created by engineers was sharedwith fabrication, transportation and erection teams. The team used Tekla Structures model in transportationand erection, as well as integrated the model to thesteel fabrication as a source of robotic welding andCNC data. Tekla Structures was fully integrated intothe fabrication system, and it helped successfullyfabricate more than 52,000 tons of steel in the samecompany within a relatively short period of time.

In-house developmentof unique modelingtechniquesTekla was one of the key players of theteam in this huge project, which wascompleted successfully on time. The teamused unique modeling techniques that hadbeen developed in-house. These includedmulti-fabrication-phase modeling methodsin order to count for weld shrinkages duringfabrication process. They saved time bymodeling just one half of the bridge andthen mirroring it to crate the other half.Image: Riza Kayan

THE BEST OF BIMPublic Vote WinnerEVERSENDAI’S MIDFIELDTERMINAL COMPLEXWhat it is: Piers, passenger bridges and gate houses at Midfield AirportLocation: Abu Dhabi, UAE By: Eversendai Engineering L.L.CFROM DESERT TO‘GARDEN OF THE GULF’The Midfield Terminal Project Complex is an integralpart of progressive development plan of Abu Dhabi2030, the aim of which is to transform the desert intothe ‘Garden of the Gulf’. This will happen with the helpof a design that responds to the natural environment, while meeting the needs of the rapidly growing capital. The plan of this prestigious Airport Project in X-shapeprogrammatic efficiency, enabling the 49 gates to processaround 50 million travelers annually. The roof of the piersalong the X is ‘pulled down’ on the facade in an undulatingform to protect the building and its habitants from the sun.FULL OF COMPLEXITIESThe arched façades of the pier slope outward approximatelyup to 5 meters on each side; the main rafters are arrangedto span between the structural mullions and the “V”columns; structural mullions support the ends of therafters and are formed of triangular hollow sections;and the tops of the “V” columns are tied together by aspine beam which also forms the chord of the transversestability truss. The details are plentiful and functional. The gatehouses provide access between aircrafts and theconcourses. They are two-story structures, connected tothe piers via deep truss bridges known as fixed bridges. Themain structure of the gatehouses themselves comprisesstructural steel columns, which provide support to compositebeams and an in-situ composite deck. The passengerbridges also comprise structural steel beams and columns.

BIM eased thecomplexitiesThe complex geometry of the structure andthe precise BIM coordination requirementsmake this project as one of the morechallenging ones for Eversendai. Consideringthe complex geometry and precise interfacerequirements with various trades, BIM playeda vital role in the successful completion ofthe project. Tekla software was used also toidentify clashes with other trades like roofingcontractor, façade contractor and MEPcontractor, and these clashes were resolvedalready in the design stage.

Tekla is the first developer of BIM software and was established in 1966, Finland. It focused on structural designs and is developed software such as Tekla Structure, Tekla Structural Designer, Tekla Tedds, Trimble Connect, Tekla Model Sharing, Tekla BIMsight, Teklan Field3D and Tekla Civil to adopt structural solutions to the BIM environment.

BIM adoption. The global status of BIM varies from developed to developing. The BIM implementation in Africa depends on the country. In Nigeria, the level of BIM awareness is high in but there is a very slow level of BIM skills; meanwhile, South Africa is facing huge challenges in BIM awareness (Matarneh et al., 2015).
