Ron was a long time memberof the Manitowoc Yacht Club, where he served ascommodore, board member, and served on manycommittees.Survivors include Ron's wife, Dolly;three children, Patricia Stokes-Hayes (Stephen),Fox Point; Michael Stokes, Manitowoc; andRonald (Gayle) Stokes Jr., La Mesa, CA; eightgrandchildren, and many other relatives andfriends.An art education scholarship fund hasbeen established in Ron's name.2018 WWS Fall exhibit, Bob & Phyllis Hoopman,Brian Hartman, Carolyn & Tom SimpsonRonald C. Stokes1932-2018Manitowoc - Ronald Stokes, 86, of Manitowoc,WI, slept away peacefully at home on Sunday,December 2, 2018. Ron was born on October 10,1932, in Milwaukee. He graduated from RufusKing High School with the class of 1950, andattended UW Milwaukee where he received hisBachelors of Science and Masters of Fine Artsdegrees in Art Education. Ron became anextraordinary teacher not only of art but of lifebeyond the arts. He shaped, influenced, andinspired many students over the years.Ron was drafted into the UnitedStates Army during the Korean conflict where heserved from 1953-1955. Ron married Maureen"Dolly" Mangin at St. Francis Church inMilwaukee, and they recently celebrated 61 yearstogether. Ron taught art in Milwaukee andManitowoc public schools for 32 years. From1967-1970 he was Director of Education at theMilwaukee Art Center, and director of a federallyfunded CESA program at the Milwaukee ArtMuseum. Ron was a member of the WisconsinWatercolor Society, National Art EducationAssociation, and Wisconsin and NationalEducation Association. He was a past presidentof WEA. Ron owned and operated Gallery Eastin Manitowoc for 32 years, from 1986 to thepresent, where on his hours open sign it said"mebbe, mebbe not." His work has wonWatercolor: A Medium for MastersKelly Kane, American Watercolor WeeklyThe Norton Museum of Art’s founder, RalphNorton, loved watercolor and acquired majorpaintings by both modern American andEuropean artists. A selection of his collection willbe the subject of the exhibition ModernSpontaneity, featuring 15 watercolors from late19th-century masters such as Winslow Homerthrough modernists such as Charles Burchfield,Charles Demuth, and Fernand Léger. Thisexhibition will reveal how watercolor bothappeals to artists because of its apparentspontaneity and simultaneously frustrates themwith its unforgiving nature.
