Putting the units togetherHow to Assemble and Use the SupplementHandHow to Make an Origami LampshadeTwo different types of paper are included with this supplement for making lampshades for the AKARI Origami unit. You can make boththe Checkered Lantern and the Celes and use each for a different location or type of situation. We've also included instructions on howto make another type of lampshade, although we did not provide any paper for this one. Please select some paper that you like and trymaking this one, too.1. Slide a "hand" onone unit into a "gap"on another unit so thatthey fit together tocombine the two units.2.Add a third unit to the assembly in thesame way.HandGapThe Checkered LanternValley fold(fold over)Mountain fold (foldunder)Time to complete: 30 min. 1 hr.GapThis lampshade was named the CheckeredLantern due to the fact that a checkeredpattern emerges when the finishedlampshade is attached and the LED is turnedon. You will use the set of six square sheetsof paper included in the supplement tomake this lampshade. The paper comes with pre-inserted foldlines, so just fold the paper along those lines.Use the side with indented fold lines as thefront side of the paper. The colored side ofpaper shown in the diagrams is the frontside. The two units should look like the diagrams when puttogether. As seen from the frontAs seen from the sideHow to fold one unit4. CelesValley fold(fold over)Mountain fold (foldunder)This lampshade was named Celes from the word Celestial because it glitters brightly likethe stars in the sphere. You will use thirty strips measuring 28 cm 4.5 cm (1.1 in. 0.17 in.)cut from the ten sheets of paper included in the supplement to make this lampshade. The paper comes with pre-inserted fold lines, so just fold the paper along those lines.Use the side with indented fold lines as the front side of the paper. The colored side ofpaper shown in the diagrams is the front side.Time to complete: 1 hr. 2 hrs. How to fold one unitHandComplete thisstep for allfive starsPocketPocket❺❶Unit completedHandHandHand3. Add five more units with each unit added asshown in the diagram so as to connect eachset of two neighboring arms together of thefive arms projecting out from the star.Fold all thirty of the stripsof paper in the same way.Structural diagram for the Celes1.Line up the mountain folds andvalley folds on a hand with thoseon a pocket, and slide the handall the way into the pocket sothat they fit together smoothly.PocketHandAt first glance, the Celes appears to be fairlycomplicated, but it actually has the simple structure asshown in the diagram. First, you need to create thefirst star for the bottom, then the five stars for the firstline on top of that, and then the five stars for thesecond line on top of the first one. Finally, you just need to put together the very last starfor the top to complete the lampshade.Once you've slid ahand into apocket, go backand redo thecreases on eachagain to reinforce. The fivestarsfor thesecond line2. Combine two arms projecting out from onestar with those of neighboring stars ( ❶ and ❷ ,❸ and ❹ , and so on) to create five partial starassemblies. Once you've completed this step, you should have five partial star shapes with twopoints each.❹10. Add in a total of five more units, one at atime, so as to connect together neighboringstars in the five star assemblies. Once you'vecompleted this step, you should have fivepartial star shapes with four points each. The star for the topPutting together the five stars for thesecond line6. After adding in the five units, you shouldend up with five partial star shapes ( ❶ – ❺ ),each with three of the five points of acompleted star, for an overall shallow dish-likeshape. The above picture was taken from theback side of the assembled shape.❶ Putting the units togetherPutting together the starfor the bottom7. Add in two additional units (for a total of tenunits) to each of the partially formed stars asshown in the diagram to complete the five starsfor the first line. Each sheet of the paper for this lampshade includes three attached strips. Please cut the three strips apart cleanly using a utility knife or other cutting tool beforestarting the origami folds. This side isthe back sideof the paper. The fold linesare raised.1. Fold the top andbottom ends intotriangles.Putting together thefive stars for the first line9. At this point, there should be fiveunattached arms ( ❶ – ❺ ) sticking outfrom the assembly as seen from theback side. Attaching the assembledlampshade to the LED standPutting together the star for the topThe star for the bottomAttach the attachment at a place where three stars intersect. You may find it easier to insert the attachment if you cut outa hole in the unit where you plan to insert it that is bigenough to fit it into using a utility knife or other cutting tool.FinishedThe fifthunit11.Add additional units to thepartially completed stars inorder to complete each fivepointed star. The fiveunattached arms here will becombined together to formthe final star for the top of thelampshade.3. Insert the fourth and fifth units asshown in the diagram. You may find it easier to insert the fifthunit if you open the pocket up and thenrefold it so as to cover the last hand, asshown in the picture.7Otona no Kagaku4. This star shape formed using five different units is thebase structure for this lampshade.[Diagram of lampshade beforecompletion] While completingassembly of the stars for thesecond line, use the unattachedarms to put together the star forthe top of the lampshade. Thispicture shows completion ofthree of the points on the finalstar.Attachment receiverInsert the LED support column into the hole onthe attachment, and push it in up to theattachment receiver. Then, turn the supportcolumn clockwise into the base unit.8

EarthenValley fold(fold over)Mountain fold (foldunder)This lampshade was named Earthen because the pattern that emergeswhen the LED is lit up resembles earthenware. No paper is provided for thisproject, so please get six sheets of square paper such as regular origamipaper ready if you intend to try making this lampshade. We recommendedthat you use paper that is around 15 cm 15 cm (5.9 in. 5.9 in.) because it willbe easier to make with paper around that size.15.Fold half onlyback toward theother side.14.Fold in toward thecenter.Time to complete: 1 hr. . 1 hr. and 30 min. How to fold one unit3. Fold twoopposite corners intoward the center.Unit completedHand1. Fold the paper in half to insert avertical fold line.2. Fold the two sheets together asshown in the diagram to insert acrease line.16.Repeat steps(12) to (15) to fold theopposite side. Insert each hand into a pocket. You can make it easier to put the unitstogether and achieve a more polishedfinished product if you apply glue tothe back side of the paper at theportions marked with a in thepicture.HandHandHandHand Attaching the assembledlampshade to the LED standHand11.Open as shown.HandHandHand7. Fold using an insidereverse fold. When the light is turned on, a complicatedpattern will emerge as shown in thepicture.13.Fold in towardthe opposite side. The center part willprotrude out as canbe seen in thepicture below.8. Do the same on the rightside.9. Fold back the overlappingsections. Do the same on theback side.9Otona no Kagaku10. Fold as shown inthe diagram. Do thesame on the backside. In the above picture, paper with a darker color on one side was used tomake it easier to tell between the front and back sides of the paper;however, in actuality, you'll achieve a better effect with the lightingusing paper that is either white or a light color on one side.Use the attachment for the Checkered Lantern. Cut away oneedge of the protrusions in the Earthen lampshade to insertthe attachment into the hole formed. Affix the Earthenlampshade and the attachment to each other usingcellophane tape or the like, and then attach the assembly tothe LED support column.Finished10
