The Grapevine29th Sunday in Ordinary TimePage 3Consideration of our Christian Commitment: Ordinary Time FestivalsThis Sunday the Scriptures call our attention to theBIGGER PICTURE. In today’s fir st r eading, Cyr us iscalled by God to be a liberator of His chosen people. TheResponsorial Psalm reminds us of God’s goodness and howwe are called to respond. Paul’s letter in the second readinggives encouragement to the Thessalonian community. In theGospel, Jesus avoids a snare that is set for Him byresponding with a statement on what should be expected bythe civil authorities and what should be expected by God.It is important to recognize how our particular experiencesand actions fit into God’s bigger plan. In today’s readings,we see contributions to Salvation History, and we serve aGod who is just as active in our world today. Cyrus, alsoknown as Cyrus the Great, extended his rule to a largesection of the Near East during the 6th century BC. After hisconquest of Babylon, he allowed the Jews, that had beendeported from Palestine, to return. The first verses of Isaiah45 describe God calling Cyrus to be the deliverer of thechosen people. Though never embracing Judaism himself,Cyrus played an integral role in the preservation of theJewish people, their culture and their religion.Thessalonica is one of several places where Paul made inroads, in spite of initially being forced to flee due to Jewishopposition. Without Paul’s fervor and dedication, I doubtChristianity would have grown and flourished the way that itdid. Paul and his proclamation of Christianity to the Gentileswas part of God’s bigger plan.In the Gospel, Jesus responds that it is good to givegovernment what it is due, while offering ourselves to theservice of God’s plan. In today’s world, not everyone buysinto the idea of a bigger plan. We would like our world tothrive, but there are violent acts, injustices and naturaldisasters. There are times when things seem comfortable andclear. These are the moments when we may find it easy topoint to God’s presence and God’s plan in the world. Thenthe tide shifts. We can feel lost and discouraged.Over the years, the loss of those who were part of myjourney helped me recognize the gifts they had been, of thelove that had been there. I have learned to see myself in theworld having a purpose, a world that reflects the goodness ofGod’s divine plan. We are all called to see how our lives anddays can be a part of God’s loving plan for all his children. This Tuesday we will have the Rite of Acceptance for thestudents in the 10th Grade of our Parish School ofReligion as they begin the last two year s of their jour neytoward Confirmation in January, 2019. Their formationbegan at the beginning of their Christian Initiation atBaptism, took another big step forward when they enteredPSR in the First Grade, and Tuesday will take another stepforward as they are accepted into these final years ofpreparation for Confirmation in January of 2019. Next yearwe will have the Rite of Election with them as they begintheir final months of preparation. This Tuesday, because ofthe Rite of Enrollment during the Eucharist, there willbe no Novena and Benediction, as the Rite of Acceptancewill take a little time.More Lay Ministers of the Eucharist are needed, and thiswould be the ideal time to join. Slight changes ar e beingmade on a Diocesan level with our Eucharistic ministers andwe will have workshops to explain the updates onWednesday, November 8th at 6:30 p.m., Thursday,November 9th at 9:30 a.m. and on Saturday, November 11 at10:00 a.m. We will then celebrate the recommissioning ofall Eucharistic Ministers at all Liturgies on Sunday,November 12. New ministers are needed in addition tothose we already have. If interested or if you have anyquestions, please call the parish office, 665-5359, and wewill direct you to those who can best serve you.BIG FRANK AND LITTLE FRANKIE Thisphotograph was in the parish bulletin in November, 2014. InOctober, we had our parish festival and had a petting zoo forsmall children with goats, chickens, etc. Well, one of thegoats was pregnant andwent into labor Saturdayafternoon in the middle ofthefestival/ pettingzoo. Needless to say, hecreated a commotion at theFestival. Because he wasborn on the parish campus, they named him LittleFrankie and put a whitecollar on him! I thought you might enjoy this. It was a photograph of an “old goat” and a “baby goat.” Little Frankiepassed away a week or two ago of undetermined causes, butthere are enough photographs of him from a few years agothat he won’t be forgotten too soon. The Festival this coming weekend will be dedicated toSue Hathcox who tr uly saw her life and love as par t ofGod’s larger plan. May she watch over us this weekend asshe did for so many years. The dedication ceremonies willbe Friday Evening at 5:30 as we begin the Festival. Let uskeep one another in prayer as we celebrate another FallFestival which will help the parish fulfill her role in God’sloving plan. Love,

Here are afew:1.2.3.4.5.We don’t want to participate in the “Judas shuffle.” Judasleft the first Mass early at the Last Supper. We don’t wantto emulate him.Leaving Mass early is rude to Jesus. It is like visiting afriend for dinner, and as soon as we finish eating, we jumpup and run out the door yelling “It was great spending timewith you; see you next week.”Leaving Mass early is rude to others. Other Massparticipants may be praying after receiving Communion.Leaving early could distract them from their prayers.Mass is not an activity on a To-Do List. If we are going toMass only to avoid a mortal sin, we are missing the boat.We are called to much more. We are called to relationship, holiness and transformation. The final blessing is important. When a priest, who by hisordination is configured to Christ, gives us his finalblessing, we are being blessed by God himself. If Jesuswere standing on the altar ready to give us His blessing, would we leave early?Yogi Berra, the great New York Yankee catcher, once said “Itain’t over till it’s over.” Mass is over when the priest gives hisfinal and the priest or the deacon says “Go forth, the Mass hasended” and the people respond “Thanks be to God.”We express our sympathy and prayers to Gary andToby Dodson, and Roxanne Disdare on the deathof their wife and mother , DOLORES TAUZINDODSON; to Gabr ielle “Gabbie” Mader e andAlvin and Lisa Madere on the death of their daughter andgranddaughter, REESE CATHERINE GRAHAM.October 14/15, 2017Identified offertory givers:Visitors/unidentified:All Saints:Total Collected:JULY 1, 2017 TO DATEActual Income:JULY 1, 2017 TO DATEActual Expense:Surplus/DeficitSt. Vincent de Paul:Building Maintenance:World Mission (Prop.
