BARN QUILTTRAILThe Carroll County Barn Quilt Trail honors Carroll County’s agrarianculture by bringing together historic barns and a “sampler” of quiltblock patterns. These quilt blocks include both classic patterns thatdepict life in a rural society as well as original designs created by thefarm owners that tell a story about their family or the farming operationwhere the barn quilt block is installed.Barn quilt trails originated in Adams County, Ohio in 2000, with theinstallation of twenty quilt blocks along a driving trail created to honor theAppalachian heritage of the area. Since then, the concept of sharing localculture through barn quilt blocks installed on barns and other structures hasspread across the continental United States and Canada. The Carroll County Barn Quilt Trail is a collaborative project begun in 2013by the Carroll County Arts Council, the Carroll County Office of Tourism, the Carroll County Department of Recreation and Parks, the Carroll CountyPublic Library, and volunteers from Everybody’s Quilt Guild. The initialphase of the project included the installation of twelve classic quilt blockpatterns chosen and painted by volunteers. Since the initial installationadditional blocks were selected or designed by farm families specifically fortheir barns and professionally printed by a local printing company. Each 8’by 8’ block is installed on an historic barn or a landmark building associatedwith the art culture or farming heritage of Carroll County.800-272-1933 Carroll County, Maryland 3

BIRDS IN FLIGHTOne of the original Barn Quilt Trail blocks, this is a variationof a popular block pieced with half square triangles. Thesehalf square triangles are called “geese” because they mimicbirds flying in flock formation. Some historians claim thatquilts were not part of the Underground Railroad while otherssupport the belief that Birds in Flight blocks such as this blockwere used in quilts directing escaped slaves to safety.Carroll County Farm Museum WESTMINSTER500 S. Center StreetThis block is mounted on a large 1842 peg-and-post frameand dressed stone bank barn at the Carroll County FarmMuseum. The 142 acre museum is carved from acreagededicated for an almshouse/farm when Carroll County wascreated in 1837. The almshouse/farm was closed in the 1960’sand the farm museum, created to preserve and promote theCounty’s agricultural heritage, opened in 1965. This quiltblock is on the museum’s transportation exhibit barn. The second square listed on the Barn Quilt Trail is a piecedblock consisting of nine equally sized square patches. The firstknown dated nine-patch quilts were made at the beginningof the nineteenth century; however, these blocks are stillpopular with quilters today. Their popularity can be attributedto the endless ways the basic block can be arranged withcombinations of single patches and pieced patches.2County FairCarroll County Ag Center WESTMINSTER706 Agricultural Center DriveThis block is appropriately named “County Fair” as it is installedon the end of the Shipley Arena at the site of the annual CarrollCounty 4-H FFA Fair. This 52,500 square foot arena wasconstructed in 2003 and each year hosts 4-H FFA Fair livestockexhibits, trade shows, expos, dog shows and various competitiveevents. The facility was named the Shipley Arena to honorDanele Shipley, a local teacher and former 4-H member.3Sunflower on StarChapel Knolls Farm WESTMINSTER718 Chapel RoadThere is no family history tied to this quilt block whichfeatures a pattern known as Eight Points Allover or KansasStar. On this barn quilt block the background pattern isoverlaid with a sunflower, the state flower for Kansas. This block is installed on a bank barn rebuilt on the originalstone foundation after a fire consumed the upper portion. Thelower level is used for general storage and the mow portionis used to store hay raised for the Roop family’s beef cattle. Inaddition to the hay crop raised by the owners, a local farmerleases a portion of this 150 acre farm for corn, soybean andwheat crops. This family is proud this farm has been hometo six generations of their family for over 100 years.800-272-1933 Carroll County, Maryland 5

Shriver MillstonesFarm Content WESTMINSTER1221 Old New Windsor PikeThe design on this block replicates the etchings in the millstoneslocated at the Union Mills Homestead along Big Pipe Creek innorthern Carroll County. The Union Mills Homestead museumis a complex of buildings dating to 1837 that includes Davidand Andrew Shriver’s family home, an operating grist mill, ablacksmith shop, and a tannery. The design reflects the family’smilling enterprises at Union Mills and at Farm Content. Thepatriotic colors chosen for this block honor the Shriver family’scontinuing political involvement at both a local and national level. The block is located on a wagon shed at Farm Content. Thisprivately owned four acre farmette is listed on the NationalRegister of Historic Places. It was chosen for the installationof the Shriver Millstones block because it is the birthplace ofDavid Shriver, an ancestor of the Maryland Shriver family. The Crazy Quilt is one of the oldest quilt patterns because earlyquilters used any scrap of fabric available and included any colorand multiple fabric types. This resulted in a patchwork of colorand texture with a story behind every scrap. Because the CrazyQuilt block was reminiscent of quilts made by their families, itwas chosen by the staff at the Carroll County Arts Center.5Crazy QuiltCarroll County Arts Council 91 W. Main StreetWESTMINSTERThis block is found on the 1937 Carroll Theatre building, renovated in 2003 and now the home of the Carroll CountyArts Council. This art deco style movie theatre is one of onlytwo art deco style buildings in Carroll County and continuesto play a ‘starring role’ in Westminster’s vibrant downtownexperience. The facility houses two art galleries, a modern 263seat theatre and two classrooms. Current exhibits and offeringsare detailed on their website CarrollCountyArtsCouncil.org.6Lone StarDell Brothers/MD-Delight Farms WESTMINSTER1436 Sullivan RoadThe Lone Star quilt block is one of the oldest, most recognizablequilt block patterns in America. There are variations of it with6 points, 8 points or more. This difficult 8-point pieced blockuses various colored diamond shapes to create the pattern. This Carroll County Barn Quilt Trail block duplicates a blockfrom a quilt made by Elsie Dell, the Great-grandmotherof the current farm owners. Before her death, Mrs. Dellwas the quilting coordinator at the Carroll County FarmMuseum and quilted with a local homemakers club. This quilt block is installed on an 1863 bank barn locatedon a 210 acre farm that has been in the Dell family forfive generations. The structure is currently used for haystorage and to house steers. The Dells have a dairyoperation and raise grain and hay on this farm.6 BARN QUILT TR AIL www.CarrollCountyTourism.org

Wedding RingAbout Tyme Farm WESTMINSTER2401 Old Taneytown RoadWhen this block is combined with identical neighboringblocks, a pattern of interlocking circles develops, hencethe name ‘Wedding Ring’. Although this is a classicpattern that has appeared in quilts for over a century, theblock has no special significance for this farm owner.Only the back stone wall of the foundation at this barn isoriginal. The wooden mow portion of the barn was filledwith hay when it caught fire and burned for five days in theearly 1950’s. The current ship’s barn was rebuilt by Amishcraftsmen using a technique to curve green oak for the beamsthat when dried are so hard it is difficult to drive nails intothem. The curved roof style maximized the storage area forhay and from the inside has the appearance of an upsidedown boat hull. The barn is used for equipment storage.Sheaf of WheatThis block is a tribute to Mayberry Mill, which operatedas a flour and feed mill in this area from 1805 to 1947and supplied flour to a cracker factory in Wilkes Barre,PA and bakers in Baltimore, MD. Local farmers broughttheir corn, wheat, oats, barley or soybeans to be groundinto livestock feed and into flour for home use.8Mayberry Mill WESTMINSTER3001 East Mayberry RoadMayberry Mill, constructed of hand-hewn timbers joinedby pins and pegs, is located at the intersection of Mayberryand Stone Roads. The original mill was built by a Germanimmigrant in 1805. The upper portion dates from 1901 whenthe mill was rebuilt following a fire caused by dust and chaffcreated over seasons of grinding grain. This mill is uniquebecause water flowed into the basement and across a horizontalturbine or waterwheel to power the grinding wheels.9Feeser’s Country FancyFeeser Family Farm TANEYTOWN2221 Crouse Mill RoadThis block is a modification of a traditional pieced block calledMother’s Fancy. The block included on the Barn Quilt Trail hasbeen personalized to reflect the Feeser family’s farm history andrenamed Feeser’s Country Fancy. The squares in the middle andon each corner of this block trace the history of animals kept onthis farm. The center square depicts a Percheron horse and thecorner squares include purebred swine (hogs), Holstein cattle,Angus cattle, and Boer goats. This four generation farm familyhas a long history of raising prize winning show animals. The block is located on a block and wood barn built in1941. When constructed it was a 20 stanchion dairybarn but was repurposed in 1984 as a pig nurseryand again in 1991 as a beef cattle show barn.800-272-1933 Carroll County, Maryland 7

SunflowerGardener’s Gourmet WESTMINSTER3201 Uniontown RoadThis Sunflower quilt block is “set on point” on a barn at theGardener’s Gourmet farm. The owner of this property chosethis block because she felt it is a ”very bright and pleasantblock that frames the entrance to Uniontown nicely”. Also,a sunflower block seemed appropriate because volunteersunflowers will occasionally appear on the property. The block is located on a bank barn that dates to the mid1800’s. The barn is constructed of hand-hewn timbers set ona stone foundation. Three generations of this farm family havehoused livestock in the lower level and stored hay and straw inthe upper portion; however, currently it is used for farm storage.Eighteen acres of this 26 acre farm is devoted to growing heirloomtomatoes and gourmet produce that is marketed to restaurantsand farmer’s markets in Baltimore, MD, and Washington, DCStairway to the StarsThe landowner, the granddaughter of the original purchaserof this farm, chose to install the Stairway to the Starts quiltblock on her early 1800’s bank barn to honor the quiltinglegacy of her great-grandmother, grandmother, and mother.MD-Locust Crest, Inc. 750 Green Valley Road11NEW WINDSORThis post and beam barn constructed on a stone foundationstill has the hay hook used to transport hay stacks fromhorse drawn wagons to the barn floor. This fifth-generationoperating farm has been in the Hesson family for over 100years. Great-grandfather sold horses kept on the lower level ofthe barn; the family had a dairy operation with stanchions inthe lower portion of the barn until the mid-1960’s; and, today, the owner’s son raises heifers and the barn provides themprotection during winter months. These farmers raise hay, cornand soybeans on this farm and use the mow for hay storage.12Tulips in a BasketZig-Zag Acres NEW WINDSOR1401 New Windsor RoadThis quilt block is one of the original blocks painted byvolunteers and installed in the first phase of the BarnQuilt Trail. It is an applique block. These blocks becamepopular in the early twentieth century and were a wayto produce beautiful, more intricate quilts that wereserviceable enough to be used as bed covers. This block is installed on a bank barn that was in use on thefarm when it was purchased by the Bassler family in 1964. Itwas originally part of their dairy operation but is now utilizedfor hay storage. This second-generation farming familyraises corn, soybeans, and hay on a total of 250 acres thatincludes the 44 acre farm where the quilt block is located.8 BARN QUILT TR AIL www.CarrollCountyTourism.org

Carolina LilyRamblin’ Pines WOODBINE801 Hoods Mill RoadWhile flower patterned blocks are often applique blocks becauseappliqueing makes it possible to create the curved shapes foundin flowers and vines, this Carolina Lily quilt trail block depicts apieced quilt block which uses triangle pieces. These basket andflower designs have been popular among quilt makers since 1850.This quilt trail block is installed on a 30’ by 60’ barn thatwas constructed in the late 1900’s. The barn houses cattleand livestock on the 35 acre farm owned by the VivianLeatherwood Trust. Three generations of this family haveraised corn, soybeans and grains on this land. In additionto the acreage being actively farmed, the site also includesthe Ramblin’ Pines Campground with primitive to fullservice camping sites and cabins available for rent.14Rail FenceThis traditional pieced four-square block is one of theoriginal twelve blocks on the Barn Quilt Trail. This blockgot its name from the rail fences used to define fields inpioneer times. These fences can still be found in residentiallandscaping throughout Carroll County and also aroundthe fields at the nearby Gettysburg Battlefield.Char-Lene Farm 2504 Gillis RoadMOUNT AIRYThe building where this block is installed was built in the early1950’s as a milking parlor. It has since been gutted and nowserves as a storage building and also houses an occasionalyard sale. The second generation of the Savage family raisesbeef cattle as well as corn and soybeans on their 398 acrefarm. During the Fall season, these farmers open a corn mazeand pumpkin patch for school children and other groups.15Maple LeafDukholmfarm SYKESVILLE201 Liberty RoadOne of the original twelve blocks installed as a partof the Barn Quilt Trail, this pieced block uses squaresand half square triangles of contrasting colors. The block is installed on a rebuilt bank barn. This propertywas purchased by the Bollingers in 1945 when they wereforced to leave their neighboring farm after it was taken byeminent domain and flooded to create the Liberty Reservoir.A fire had previously destroyed the frame barn and the onlyportion remaining was the stone foundation. After movingto the farm, the Bollingers rebuilt the upper portion of thebarn using poplar timber they harvested from their previousfarm. The third generation of this farm family stores hay andgrain on the upper level of the rebuilt barn and opened thelower level and tied it into their loafing barn for beef cattle.800-272-1933 Carroll County, Maryland 9

Black-Eyed SusanSills Farm FINKSBURG2526 Bollinger Mill RoadThis block is an adaptation of a traditional pieced blockcalled “Sister’s Fancy”. The owner altered the blockpattern to include a Black-Eyed Susan in the center blockand further honored the State of Maryland by usingthe state flag colors of red, black, gold and white. It is installed on a late 1800’s bank barn. The building isconstructed on a stone foundation with a post and beam, woodenpeg barn built primarily of oak. The Sills family relocated to thisproperty after their farm was taken by eminent domain in 1946for the creation of the Liberty Reservoir. The first and secondgenerations of this family raised truck crops on this five-acrefarmette. The third generation of this family maintains thisproperty at the border of the Liberty Watershed as their personalresidence. They use the barn for hay and equipment storage. This four patch quilt block was popular in the early1900’s. It is a geometric pattern pieced entirely fromhalf-square triangles. Quilt patterns often reflected theeveryday life of families and that is true of this blockthat calls attention to our agricultural heritage and thefamily’s dependence on crops harvested on their farms. This block was chosen by the farm owners to representthe soybeans and corn grown on their 80 acre farm.Corn and Beans17Nelson Farm WESTMINSTER1835 Nelson RoadFour generations of the Nelson family have farmed thisland since the farm was established in 1868. This blockis installed on a bank barn that is currently used to storeequipment. Over the years, these farm families have carvedimportant dates from family history into the side of the barn.18Stars and BarsMidway Farm WESTMINSTER1733 Littlestown PikeThis block pays tribute to Carroll County’s participation inthe Civil War when Western Maryland Railroad’s depot inWestminster was commandeered as a supply base for theUnion Army to receive supplies arriving from Baltimore andWashington. After July, 1863, hospital trains departed from thatdepot carrying soldiers wounded in Gettysburg. Both Union andConfederate troops traveled this road to and from Gettysburg.Troops marched along the road to Gettysburg within theshadow of this 1848 bank barn. The foundation is of blue stonewhich was plentiful in the Bachman Valley area where thissix acre farm is located. The barn is constructed of chestnutand oak framing with pine and poplar siding. 19Dresden PlateSilver Hill Farms WESTMINSTER4320 Littlestown PikeOne of the original twelve blocks on the Barn Quilt Trail, this block is named after elaborate floral or fruit designporcelain plates produced in Dresden, Germany. Quiltsusing this pattern were often made with recycled feed sacks. The women pieced petal shaped wedges of the design andthen appliqued the completed ‘plate’ to a fabric square. This block is installed on a beautiful brick end barn thatincorporates an open brickwork pattern. When built in1843, the barn had stalls for livestock on the lower leveland hay storage on the upper level. In addition to cornand grain crops, this fourth generation farm family raisesAmerican British White Parks beef cattle. Originally bredfor sacrificial purposes, these English cattle are now raisedcommercially for their lean, moist meat. Look for thisspecialty breed of white cattle with black noses and ears.Carpenter’s WheelTrades or occupations often inspired quilt block names andthis pattern would recognize the self-sufficient settler’s needto know many trades. It is also called Star of Bethlehemor Carpenter’s Star, which Underground Railroad legendattributes to slaves who proclaimed Jesus as the mastercarpenter in their lives and looked for quilts using this blockwith a dark color pointing to their next safe harbor.20Deer Crossing Farm WESTMINSTER3261 Bixler Church RoadThis block is installed on a Pennsylvania bank barn with narrowGerman siding built on a serpentine green stone foundation. Basedon a date etched into a barn timber, the owners date this barn to1863. The barn has served many purposes on this former dairy, hog, chicken and crop farm. It now provides shelter for alpacasand llamas which produce Exotic Fiber sold by these farm owners. The farm is located in the Bachman Mills Historic District.21Log CabinThomas Tree Farm MANCHESTER3501 Hanover PikeUnderground Railroad legend claims log cabin blocks stitchedwith black centers were a sign to escaping slaves that a housewas a “safe” location. This pieced block has a traditional redcenter chimney hole signifying fire in the hearth of a cozyhome. Although, historians date the first Log Cabin quilt to thebeginning of the Civil War, quilts using this pattern were notpopular until after the war perhaps as a way of rememberingAbraham Lincoln’s death and his role in freeing slaves. The block is installed on an 1800’s chestnut frame bankbarn located on 82 acres farmed by the Thomas family fortwo generations.
