BEMIDJI STATE WOMEN’SMEN’S BASKETBALL2004-05A Preview of the 2004-05 SeasonThe 2004-05 women’s basketball season is one that comes with a great deal ofanticipation at Bemidji State University. It seems like just yesterday the team wasputting the wraps on its most successful season in close to ten years. In addition to securing more wins (14) than any BSU women’s basketball team sincethe 1995-96 squad that totaled 19 wins, the Beavers set 19 team and individual andschool records and not only qualified for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament, it hosted a first round game for the first time in the history of thetournament. It might be hard to imagine that the team will be able to continue on the same steadyincline to success that it began last winter, but with the bulk of his line-up returningthis season, it is safe to say that third-year head coach Mike Power and his staff arebelievers.“This is the first time since I have been at BSU that we actually have a group that cando what we want to do defensively in back-to-back years instead of just putting it inand the whole group leaves,” said head coach Mike Power.Although the Beavers lost three players from last year’s roster, they return three oftheir top four scorers including 2003-04 first team All-NSIC forward Stacia Swansonand 2004 NSIC Newcomer of the Year guard Maggie Gernbacher. The team alsoreturns five other players that saw time in every BSU game a year ago.Swanson is the centerpiece of the 2004-05 team. Since she arrived on the BSUscene in 2002-03 the Sioux City, Iowa native has averaged better than 14 points andseven rebounds per game and that’s not to mention what he means to the team bothon and off the floor as a leader.“She has been such a great player for us,” commented Power. “She has never really been a very vocal player, but this season she has really stepped up and taken aleadership role. The other players really respect her because of the type of playershe is and the way she carries herself.” He added, “ She is a kid that we are goingto lean on hard this year. For us to go anywhere she has to have a good year andI expect she will.”After bursting onto the NSIC scene as a freshman averaging over 14 points pergame and proving that she is one of the best pure shooters in the league, MaggieGernbacher begins her second season with the Beavers.“She kind of surprised a lot of people last year,” Power said. “We all knew she couldshoot, but towards the end of the year she really started to drive the ball to the holewell and drew a lot of free-throws which was big for us because she is such a goodshooter.”Senior co-captain Allison Sanderberg scored six points and pulled down close tofour rebounds in her first season at BSU after transfuring from St. Scholastica. Thisseason Power and his crew will look to her to log a lot of time on the floor.“Allison Sanderberg could turn into being our ‘x’-factor,” Power commented. “We areexpecting huge things out of her. We know how important she will be defensively butshe could also have a key role on offense.”“Serena Nalls is as athletic as anybody in the conference but she has to stay healthyand learn to play harder and stronger.”After adjusting to the speed of the collegiate game during the first portion of the season Nancy McConkey became a big contributer as the season wound down.“Nancy was someone who made big improvements for us last year. It took her awhile to understand differences in the college game, but when she di,d she cameon like gangbusters for us.” Power added, “she is another player we are looking forbig things from.”This nucleolus of returning players is an important feature of the Mike Power systemof defense. He and his coaching staff are hoping it will allow them to eliminate a lot ofthe metal errors they made last season. “I think especially in the first couple months2of the season our inexperience showed up so hopefully we can get over that humpand get to the next level right away this season.”Bemidji State plans to fill some of the void left from the loss of Shawne Koch (3.7 ppg,2.4 rpg, 3.6 apg), Yontel Handford (1.4 ppg, 1.1 rpg) and Kelli Hooten (6.7 ppg, 5.6rpg) from last year’s team with the 2004-05 signing class.Lawson is a dynamic, quick point guard that knows how to pass the ball. As a seniorin Spencer, Iowa she psted one of the state’s top assist totals. Stephaine Peterson(Bismarck, N.D.) and Danielle Srock (Faribault, Minn.) will shore up the BSU postgame as each masure over six-feet and Karly Simonson (Rockford, Minn.) heightand shooting ability to the guard position.BSU’s 2004-05 schedule may be one of the most unique in all of Division II this season. After opening the season with a pair of home games, in their temporary homeacross campus in Memorial Hall, the team embarks on one of the lengthiest roadswings on record at BSU—10 games spanning almost three months. Only BSU’s1991-92 team has has gone that long without playing a home contest.“I think it is going to help us in the long run,” added Power. “Being on the road causessome adverse situations so we will learn a lot about the character our. Just like a lotof NSIC teams if we are going to get into the NCAA Tournament it is not going to beby regional rankings, we are going to have to win our way in through the conferencetournament.”The Beavers begin the stint on the road drawing a tough Seattle Pacific team at theBetty Engelstad Thanksgiving Classic hosted by North Dakota. The team then heads to the mountains of Colorado to compete in the Coors Classicwhere they will play Regis University and Power’s previous institution Metro Stateof Denver. When the Beavers finally return to the BSU Gymnasium in early January they face2004 NCAA tournament participant Concordia-St. Paul in the 2004-05 NSIC opener. In a season in which four teams tied forthird place at 8-8 and just three gamesseparated second from a tie for sixth, this season looks to be no different inas the conference season rolls around.2003-04 NSIC regular season champion and NCAA participant ConcordiaSt. Paul still looks to be a step abovethe rest of the field returning the bulkof their team from a 15-1 league recordlast winter. With the University of Minnesota Duluth leaving the NSIC for theNorth Central Conference this year,Winoa my slip in the standings dueto looseing long-time head coach Teriand a large portion of their team, but Junior Stacia Swanson (#33) returns asMSU-Moorhead will again be stong the team’s leader in points (13.1 ppg),as well as Northern State and Minne- rebounds (7.8 rpg), steals (2.5 spg) andsota-Crookston. With a good portion of field goal percentage (.484).their line-up back again this year, BSUhopes to be in the mix again as March comes around.“Outside of Concordia I think there is a lot of parity,” Power commented. “CSP didn’treally loose anybody from their 2003-04 team that won the conference and advancedto the NCAA Tournament so they are going to the top dog. After Concordia I don’tthink anybody really separated themselves from each other from second to eighth. Ithink that we could easily finish in second or in eighth, I just think there is that muchparity. Just like last season anyone could beat anyone on any given night.”2004-05 BEAVER BASKETBALL

BEMIDJI STATE WOWOMEN’S BASKETBALL2004-05Mike PowerHead CoachMike Power heads into his secondyear at Bemidji State with the purposeto turn around a club that totaled eightvictories in two years combined beforehis arrival. Power surpassed that output in 2002-03 as he led the Beaversto nine wins. One thing Power instills inhis team is the effort to work on thedefensive end. Bemidji State went 10straight games to end last season forcing more than 20 turnovers and hadfewer turnovers than its opponent ineach of its final 16 games. Also, BSUfinished with 357 steals on the year, which was a school record - the old mark for steals was 356 during the 1985-86season.Power comes to BSU after a four-year stay at Metropolitan State College inDenver, Colo. where he posted a 56-52 record, setting a school record for best winning percentage by a head coach in his first two years (.636). Power’s teams finishedin the top seven in the 14-team Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference three of his fouryears at the helm, making the RMAC Tournament three times. He helped the Roadrunners set five school single-game or single-season records during his tenure andmentored the program’s all-time leaders in scoring, steals, assists and free-throwshooting. Power also helped the Roadrunners snap Nebraska-Kearney’s 78-gamehome winning streak with a 63-58 win on Feb. 15, 2002.Prior to his stay at Metro State, Power resurrected the Briar Cliff College program in Sioux City, Iowa. Power inherited an 0-29 team and in six seasons thereposted a 127-73 record - including 93-17 over his final three seasons - and madethree consecutive NAIA Division II National Tournament appearances. He led theChargers to Elite Eight appearances in 1996 and 1997. Power’s teams posted twoconsecutive 30-win seasons at Briar Cliff, a 37-1 march in 1996-’97 which includeda school-record 32-0 unbeaten regular season and a 37-0 record before sufferingthe first loss, and 31-4 in 1997-’98. Power’s teams were offensive juggernauts at theNAIA Division II level, leading the nation in scoring and scoring margin in both 1996’97 and 1997-’98. Under Power, the Chargers set the school single-game scoringrecord with 112 points against Northwestern (Minn.), one of 10 games with 100 ormore points during the 1996-’97 season. Power developed three All-America playersat Briar Cliff and won three consecutive NAIA Independent Midwest Region Coach ofthe Year honors.Power also turned around a program with a losing history during a three-yearstay at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Neb. After a 5-20 finish during hisfirst year at the helm, Power had built a program with a winning record by his thirdyear when the Prairie Wolves finished 15-11. Under Power’s watch, Wesleyan ledthe nation (NCAA Division III) in scoring during the 1990-’91 season and also led thenation in three-point field goals per game in both 1989-’90 and 1990-’91.Power also has experience coaching at the high school level, spending threeseasons as an assistant coach at Pius X High School in Lincoln, Neb. from 1985-’88and one year as head coach and physical education teacher at Gothenburg HighSchool in Gothenburg, Neb. in 1991-’92. He also has served on the staff of numerousbasketball camps at Nebraska-Kearney and Briar Cliff College.Power, who is the eighth head coach in the history of BSU women’s basketball, earned a bachelor of science degree in social science from the University of Nebraska in 1988 and a master of physical education degree from Nebraska in 1994.Here is a closer look at Power:– Career Record: 236-203 (.540) - Entering 16th season– Record at BSU: 23-33 (.411) - Entering 3rd season– College:M.S. in Physical Education - Nebraska-Lincoln (1994)B.S. in Social Science - Nebraska-Lincoln (1988)– College Coaching Career:*2002-present: Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Bemidji State University- Record: 23-33*1999-2002: Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Metropolitan State College(NCAA DII) - Record: 56-52*1992-1998: Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Briar Cliff University (NAIADII) - Record: 127-73*1988-1991: Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Nebraska Wesleyan(NCAA DIII) - Record: 30-45– Birthdate: Sept. 28, 1964– Birthplace: Bismarck, N.D.– College Coaching Profile:Year.
