Volume 1, Issue 5Joliet CursilloSummer 2004THE 4th Day NewsletterFrom the Lay DirectorPat MilletInside this issue:Calendar ofEvents“I am the vine. You are the branches. Goand produce much fruit.”3Ulterya Grande 3WorkshopGreat scripture for this time of year, when the cornis high and ready for harvesting!! We still have thewonderful, bright, vibrant colors of summer, but thecrops are ready to be harvested. My GroupReunionWe’ve had a wonderful year in Joliet Cursillo thisyear. We’ve held a total of five Weekends since lastAugust, and have watched over 125 Candidates become Cursillistas. With thathas come the possibility of “planting Christ” into at least 125 new environments. And now, the year is ending, and it’s time to harvest the fruits of our labor (Hislabor, if we’re doing it right!!)We make it seem complicated, but it is really so very simple when we rememberwe are Christ’s instruments. If we persevere and keep His Fire alive and wellwithin us, we simply bring His Spirit into all of our environments. The butchergets it, the teacher gets it, our children get it, our neighbor gets it!! If we keepthe fires glowing, and stay connected to His vital life within us, all we have to dois to bring Him to others!! Not such an Olympic task, is it?So, how are we taking care of our Fires? Actually, our task is a lot like being akeeper of the Olympic Flame. Like those persons chosen to carry the Flame toopen the Games, we need to prepare ourselves - to not drop it, and to be awareof the dangers involved, e.g., wind, rain, stumbling, etc.! To be up to the task,we need to prepare ourselves, steady our nerves, firm up our bodies, focus ourmind on the task on hand. And then be truly present with every step we take.Cursillo continues to offer us a method for growth and formation, for ongoingsupport as we carry the Flame out to the world:cont page 24Palanca Don’tLeave HomeWithout It4As My Wifeand Kids5From theSecretary5WorkshopInfo6Special points ofinterest:! My Group ReunionBob CalamiaWe were discussing one day the possible addition of another member to our group reunion. One member ofthe group expressed how important our meetings were for him. I told them that I felt the same way. Well, one of the group was surprised I felt this way. Being of the male persuasion I probably am guilty of notexpressing my feelings very often. I consider this to be a shortcoming (although I have no plans to doanything about it). The following poem (if I can be so bold as to call it a poem) could be one step towardthe cure of my predominantly male disease. My Group ReunionOld conversations bore,Old goals have lost their luster,Old ways seem so frivolous now.Lost are yesterday’s concerns for the gains of the day,For a life predicated on comfort and ease,And retirements filled with travel and leisure. My head has been bent toward the One Transcendent. Not alone have I diverted my gaze. Not alone have I deserted old ways. But with others seeking this new direction.I’m privileged with the company of those distracted like me.We travel, some ahead, dragging me alongSome behind, tethered to my waist, some at my side,All looking to see the One Eternity.Palanca Don’t Leave Home without It!Bob CalamiaWe have Men’s and Women’s teams currently in formation. We need palanca for the teams and for thecandidates who will be living the awesome experience of the Cursillo. Please offer palanca for their intention. Prayer and sacrifice precede all the good that we do and it’s never too soon to begin. Let the fourthday community know all that you do by sending a letter to someone on the Secretariat or by bringing themto Ulteryas or to leader school. You can also email your palanca to jde palanca@yahoo.com.Please process the applications for candidates as quickly as possible. The sooner we know of them thesooner we can start to offer palanca for them. Applications will be available at the school meetings or fromthe Cursillo leaders in your parish. Remember you can also print out applications by logging on to ourwebsite jolietcursillo.org click on ‘Forms Information” - then click on the mailbox—then print the formPage 4THE 4th Day Newsletter

Just Ask My Wife and KidsBob CalamiaJust ask my wife andkids. There are times inmy life when I wax nostalgic. Now that mythree years leading theSchool of Leaders isdrawing to a close mysentimental side isemerging once again andI feel compelled to sharea few thoughts with thefourth day that I’vegrown to love so much.five times since then, muchless than many Cursillistas. Each one of them has been agrowth experience for me.We spend most of our livesliving in a world that does notwant to hear His voice. It isvery heartening to spend aweekend with the candidateswho are there because theyare seeking and want to amplify that quiet whisper ofGod in their ears. The greatest source ofThe greatest source ofinspiration, though,I’ve been described asinspiration, though, comesnot being a weekend per- comes from the relation- from the relationships withships with the peopleson and I’m not all tothe people I’ve met throughI’ve met through thegether sure that is an aptthe Cursillo movement. ICursillodescription of me. Fewwould love to embarrass allevents in my life haveof you ( ask my kids , theyeffected such a tremendous change inknow I love to embarrass ) bymy faith as my weekend experience.mentioning you by name, but, I fear II’ve been part of a weekend team onlywould offend someone throughomission. The people I meet throughthe movement have caused me tostretch my friendship with Jesus andall of His creation. I’m inspired byeach Ultreya, though I don’t go toenough of them. The group reunionsI’ve participated in have never failedto stimulate my desire to better knowthe Lord.Through the Cursillo movement I’vecome to love parents who cause me tosay to myself, “That’s the kind of parent I want to be!” I’ve fallen in lovewith people who have shown me thekind of citizen I should be. I see nearlyevery day people who have brought meto the point where my God and Creatoris the central part of my life and themotivator of almost all that I do.I suppose I could be accused of overstating my case because of a severeoverdose of sentimentality. I don’tthink so. I mean every word. Just askA Note from your secretary .Please remember to send your email / address changes to me at jdc secretary@yahoo.com Remember to add theJoliet Secretariat email addresses to your accepted email list, as if you have spam protection, I will receive the emailback saying undeliverable.
