Cross symbols are among the oldest on earth, andare found in every culture. Runes Alphabet

Runes used by the SSRuneNameMeaningCommentsdoppelte "Victory" or "Schutzstaffel" The sig rune (or Siegrune) symbolisedSiegrunevictory (sieg). In its original form asthe ᛋ-rune of the Younger Futhark, itrepresented the sun; however, von Listreinterpreted it as a victory sign whenhe compiled his list of "Armanenrunes" .[2]It was adapted into the emblem of theSS in 1933 by Walter Heck, anSS Sturmhauptführer who worked as agraphic designer for FerdinandHoffstatter, a producer of emblems andinsignia in Bonn.[2] Heck's simple butstriking device consisted oftwo sig runes drawn side by side likelightning bolts, and was soon adoptedby all branches of the SS thoughHeck himself received only a tokenpayment of 2.5 Reichsmarks for hiswork.[3] The device had a doublemeaning; as well as standing for theinitials of the SS, it could be read as arallying cry of "Victory, Victory!".[2] Thesymbol became so ubiquitous that itwas frequently typeset using runesrather than letters; during the Naziperiod, an extra key was added toGerman typewriters to enable them totype the double-sig logo with a singlekeystroke.[4]EifGerZeal / enthusiasmThe Eif rune is a rotated and reflectedversion of the ᛇ or Eihwaz rune. Duringthe early years of the SS it was usedby Hitler's personal adjutants, suchas Rudolf Hess.[3]Communal spiritThe Ger rune was used to symbolisethe communitarian ideal of the SS.The 11th SS Volunteer PanzergrenadierDivision Nordland, a Waffen-SS unit, adopted the rune as a variant of itsdivisional insignia.[3]

HagalLebenOdalFaith in NazismThe Hagal Armanen rune was widelyused in the SS for its symbolicrepresentation of "unshakeable faith"in Nazi philosophy, as Himmler putit.[5] It was used in SS weddings as wellas on the SS-Ehrenring (death's headring) worn by members of the SS. Therune was also used as division insigniaof the 6th SS Mountain Division Nord.It is roughly similar tothe ᚼ or Haglaz rune of the YoungerFuthark, which stood for "hail", but itwas modified by von List for hisArmanen runes. List considered it to bethe "mother rune" of his runic alphabetand envisaged it as a representation ofa hexagonal crystal.[6]LifeThe Lebensrune or "life rune" wasbased on the Algiz rune and was usedby the Lebensborn e. V., the SS bodyresponsible forthe Lebensborn programme whichsupported the "racially, biologically, and hereditarily valuable families" ofSS members and other"Aryans".[3][7] This interpretation of the"man" rune is not based on List, but itoccurs as early as the 1920s in theliterature of Germanic mysticism,[8] andit came to be widely used withinthe NSDAP and Nazi Germany, e.g. inofficial prescriptions for the variousuniforms ofthe Sturmabteilung.[9] The Yr runecame to be seen as the "life rune"inverted and interpreted as "deathrune" (Todesrune) During the WorldWar II era, these two runes (ᛉ for"born", for "died") came to be usedin obituaries and on tomb stones asmarking birth and death dates, replacing asterisk and cross symbols (*f "b", f "died") ce i allused in this context in Germany.Kinship, family and bloodunityThe Odal rune symbolised severalvalues of which were of centralimportance to Nazi ideology. It wasadopted from the Elder Futhark -rune.During the Second World War it was

used by the 7th SS Volunteer MountainDivision Prinz Eugen and the 23rd SSVolunteer Panzer Grenadier DivisionNederland, as well as the SS-Rasseund Siedlungshauptamt, which wasresponsible for maintaining the racialpurity of the SS.[10]OpferTodTyrSelf-sacrificeThe use of the Opfer rune which, likethe Eif rune, is a rotated version ofthe ᛇ or Eihwaz rune preceded theNazis, as it was first adopted after1918 by Der Stahlhelm war veterans'movement that eventually merged withthe Nazi Sturmabteilung (SA). Thesymbol was adopted by the Nazis after1923 to commemorate the partymembers who died in Hitler'sfailed Beer Hall Putsch.[3]DeathThe Todesrune is the inverted versionof the Lebensrune or "life rune". It wasbased on the or Yr rune, whichoriginally meant "yew".[7] It was usedby the SS to represent death ondocuments and grave markers in placef he m e ce i almb lused for such purposes.[3]Leadership in battleThe Tyr rune followed the design ofthe or Tiwaz rune, named after Týr,the god of single combat, victory andheroic glory in Norse mythology. Itsassociation with war meant that the SSthought of it as the "Kampf" or battlerune, symbolising military leadership. The SS commonly used it in place ofthe Christian cross on the gravemarkers of its members. It was alsoused by graduates of theSA Reichsführerschule, which trainedSS officers until 1934; they wore it ontheir upper left arms. It was adoptedas an emblem by the 32nd SSVolunteer Grenadier Division 30Januar, which was assembled from themembers of SS schools in January1945, as well as by the SS Recruitmentand Training Department[10]As well as List's Armanen runes, the SS used a number of other esoteric symbols. These included:

WolfsangelLiberty andThe Wolfsangel ('wolf hook') was used asindependence a heraldic symbol alluding to a wolf trap, and isstill found on the municipal arms of a numberof German towns and cities. It was adopted bya fifteenth-century peasants' uprising, thusacquiring an association with liberty andindependence. The Nazi Party adopted thesymbol during its early years and it wassubsequently widely used by the SS, includingby units such as the 2nd SS Division Das Reich.A variant of the Wolfsangel was used by theWeer Afdeelingen, the paramilitary wing ofthe National Socialist Movement in theNetherlands and the 34th SS VolunteerGrenadier Division Landstorm Nederland, whichwas raised from Dutch Nazis[10] and the 4th SSPolizei Panzergrenadier Division.Heilszeichen ProsperityThe Heilszeichen symbols appeared on the SS"death's head" ring and were used to symbolisegood fortune and success.[10]
