I. General Safety Precautions! WARNINGRead equipment manufacturer’s manual and thismaterial thoroughly before using this engine. Failure todo so can result in serious injury or death. Consult yourlocal Authorized TecumsehPower Servicing Dealer, call1-800-558-5402, or go to www.TecumsehPower.com foradditional information.A. Avoid Carbon Monoxide PoisoningAll engine exhaust containscarbon monoxide, a deadlygas. Breathing carbonmonoxide can causeheadaches, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, confusionand eventually death.B. Avoid Gasoline FiresGasoline (fuel) vapors are highly flammableand can explode. Fuel vapors can spreadand be ignited by a spark or flame many feetaway from engine. To prevent injury or deathfrom fuel fires, follow these instructions: NEVER store engine with fuel in fueltank inside a building with potentialsources of ignition such as hot water and spaceheaters, clothes dryers, electric motors, etc. NEVER remove fuel fill cap or add fuel when engineis running. NEVER start or operate the engine with the fuel fillcap removed. Allow engine to cool before refueling. NEVER fill fuel tank indoors. Fill fuel tank outdoorsin a well-ventilated area.Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gaswhich may be present even if you DO NOT see or smellany engine exhaust. Deadly levels of carbon monoxide cancollect rapidly and you can quickly be overcome andunable to save yourself. Also, deadly levels of carbonmonoxide can linger for hours or days in enclosed orpoorly-ventilated areas. If you experience any symptoms ofcarbon monoxide poisoning, leave the area immediately, get fresh air, and SEEK MEDICAL TREATMENT.To prevent serious injury or death from carbon monoxide: DO NOT smoke while refueling tank. Use only an approved red GASOLINE containerto store and dispense fuel. TecumsehPowerCompany recommends purchasing gasoline incontainers with a capacity of 2.5 gallons or less.Small containers are easier to handle and helpeliminate spillage during refueling. DO NOT pour fuel from engine or siphon fuel bymouth. To empty the fuel tank, see "I. Draining Fuel"instructions on page 26. NEVER run engine indoors. Even if you try toventilate engine exhaust with fans or open windowsand doors, carbon monoxide can rapidly reachdangerous levels. NEVER run engine in poorly-ventilated or partiallyenclosed areas such as barns, garages, basements, carports, under dwellings, or in pits. NEVER run engine outdoors where engine exhaustcan be drawn into a building through openings suchas windows and doors.181-1269-14Power Sport Recreational ApplicationPage 1

C. Adult Supervision of Operation,Refueling and MaintenanceThe manufacturer of the recreational vehicle may provideinformation about who is allowed to operate or ride in thevehicle (see equipment manufacturer’s manual). NOTeveryone who is allowed to operate or ride in the vehicle iscapable of safely and responsibly operating, maintainingand/or fueling this Power Sport engine. TecumsehPowerCompany recommends the following: An adult should fuel this engine. NEVER allowchildren to refuel this engine. See "D. Filling FuelTank" instructions on page 8.Figure 1. DO NOT use Without Engine Shaft Guard An adult should perform maintenance on thisengine. See "VIII. Maintenance" instructions onpage 18. Only allow children to performmaintenance if an adult has determined they areexperienced and capable of such operation.12 An adult should start the engine. See "G. AvoidAccidental Starts" instructions on page 3 and "A.Engine Pre-Ride Checklist" instructions on page 6.Only allow children to start the engine if an adult hasdetermined they are experienced and capable ofsuch operation. To avoid unsupervised operation of the recreationalvehicle, especially by children, NEVER leave theengine unattended when it is running.STOP1. Muffler Guard2. Flywheel GuardD. Stay Away from Rotating PartsNEVER operate the engine with anunguarded engine shaft or flywheel.See Figures 1 and 2.Figure 2. Typical Engine Guard LocationsThe equipment manufacturer mayattach a sprocket and chain or pulleyand belt to the engine shaft. If theseparts are NOT properly guarded, or ifyou are NOT sure whether they areproperly guarded, DO NOT use yourrecreational vehicle; contact theequipment manufacturer. Hands, feet, hair, jewelry, clothing, etc. can becomeentangled in rotating parts, leading to serious injury ordeath. To avoid serious injury or death, be sure theflywheel guard is in place. See Figures 1 and 2.E.DO NOT Modify EngineF.Avoid Burns and Fire from Hot SurfacesThe muffler and other engine parts becomeextremely hot during operation and remainhot after the engine has stopped. To avoid severe burns on contact,STAY AWAY from hot areas ofengine. DO NOT operate the enginewithout the muffler guard in place,if equipped. See Figure 2. To reduce the risk of fire keep all materials that canburn, including grass and leaves, away from mufflerand rest of engine. DO NOT operate, idle or parkengine powered equipment in long dry grass orother dry ground cover. To avoid serious injury or death, DO NOT modify engine inany way. Tampering with the governor setting can lead to arunaway vehicle and cause the engine to operate at unsafespeeds. NEVER tamper with factory setting of enginegovernor.Page 2Power Sport Recreational Application181-1269-14

G.Avoid Accidental StartsTo prevent accidental starting when working on equipmentalways: Carefully disconnect spark plug wire and keep itaway from spark plug. See Figures 3 and 4. Keep the disconnected spark plug wiresecurely away from metal parts where arcingcould occur. Attach the spark plug wire to the groundingpost, if provided. Disconnect battery at negative terminal first, ifengine is equipped with a DC electric starter. Turn all engine switches to “OFF” position. Remove ignition key, if provided.H.Figure 3. Disconnecting/Connecting Spark PlugUse Hearing ProtectionEngine noise may cause hearing damage. Always wearhearing protection when operating a recreational vehicleengine.Figure 4.
