Hi from Nat’l. Chevy,There’s not too much to inform you of. We’re keeping busy trying to keep the shelves full, working on finishingthe catalog and getting new parts numbered and on the shelves. We’ve done almost 30 interiors since Christmas, soColleen is also going non-stop to get those out to the customers. The weather hasn’t been too snowy but not very warm. We haven’t had a lot of below zero weather which we appreciate. March is usually our snowiest month, but we’re hopeful we won’t get a lot.Check out the new parts – there are more this month – I hope you can use some of them.‘Til next time.SAVE March SpecialsSAVE 25.00 off on Shift Kit Purchase3 Speed Floor Shift KitDesigned to fit your 1949-54 exclusively - not a universal fit. Now ShowingI’m sending a couple photos of the Custom Royal (taupe) I recently purchased from you and installed. Myfirst ever attempt of this kind of project. I won’t say it was “pegging out” my fun meter, but if I can do it, mostanyone can. You are correct when you say it takes time, and patience. The instructions you sent helped a lot, but I had to decide which step needed to be completed first. To easeinto the job and see if I wanted to try all of it, I covered the armrests first, then put the trim on the door panels. So far, nothing ruined or screwed up.I decided the first job was the windlace, and that required spreading the channels of the kick panel trimas there was no way the windlace would ever slide into it. They had been cleaned and wire brushed to a goodsheen. I even tried some “slickum.” Anyway, they got installed.Next was the headliner. In before package shelf, since headliner has to be fastened down in lower aftcorners. I must stress it’s important to note all screw holes for metal trim and mark with tape, etc. as some willbe covered up. I made a headliner installation tool using a wide putty knife for sheetrock mud. I attached thebows – one in front of interior light first as it has tabs; tacked the front (centered), then began to simultaneouslywork the sides, tightening toward the rear. I found it easier to kind of work out wrinkles as I went. Do NOT bein any hurry to cut excess. A steamer is almost a must have (cheap at Wal-Mart). A multi-sized pack of plasticclamps is worth buying just to temporarily hold things during trial fits all during the job. Don’t wait until youare finished to install the sunvisors in case you made the corners too tight.Package shelf next, rear side panels, and do window trims, being careful to trim away excess material onlyas much as needed not to show. I was unsure about the assist straps, but found a ladies web belt at Goodwill ina color that matched ok. Be sure and check the door panel nails position in relation to slots in door metal. I hadsome at the front that were different. Go ahead and trim out the fuzzy pad material where armrest attach screwsgo through (will twist up into a wad if you don’t) and take a mental picture of angle and fit before attempting toinstall armrest.Using the cardboard the new interior was shipped in on the floorboard makes a good work surface. Cleanfloor well and use shop vac before gluing the new padding and carpet. Take time to check fit first before gluingas carpet must be centered as well as meet up in joints front to rear.Installing the new seat covering is easier with a table you can walk around. It takes many more hog ringsthan came with kit. I used the commoncheap pliers, but a good set of angled onesmay have been easier to handle. Important –align seams of bottoms with backs and makereference marks before fastening it all ontoframes.I managed to get almost all the wrinklesout – maybe talk to a shop for tips on that.Bottom line – I’m satisfied – the car looks(and smells) a lot better. You have my permission to print anyof this to include in newsletter, or send outwith kits. I may have left out a few things, but maybe will help someone else. I’ll notbe opening an upholstery shop anytime soonthough. Cover CarDear National Chevy Association,This is our 1950 ChevroletStyleline Deluxe BelAir TwoDoor Hardtop. My father-in-law, Milburn“Mel” Shurtleff, purchasedthis Chevy new from a localChevrolet dealer in Lincoln,Nebraska on November6, 1950, for 2,030 threemonths before he gotmarried. This Windsor Blue andGrecian Gray Hardtophas the original 216.5Cu.In. O.H.V. 92 H.P. sixcylinder engine with 3 speedmanual transmission.Options include: clock, deluxe push button radio, heater, oilfilter, turn signals and back-up lights.Mel and my mother-in-law, Lee, went on their honeymoon in this Chevy and later they brought all three oftheir newborn children home from the hospital in it, including my lovely wife, Jody.It was driven daily until the early 1970’s when it was parked with 115,000 miles on the odometer and storedin the family’s garage. In January 2002, Mel gave this car (including the original title and the original bill of sale) to me and Jody. The restoration took 2 1/2 years. I did all of the work myself, mechanical, upholstery, body work and paintjob.I would like to thank the National Chevy Association for providing some difficult-to-find items such asthe original trunk mat and cardboard trunk panels that certainly gave the luggage compartment a “new” andfinished look.I am sending some “before and after” pictures of the restoration, including some black and white photos thatwere taken in 1950 the day the Chevy was purchased.Jody and I now take the Chevy to the local drive-in on Friday nights from April through October for theweekly show ‘n shine. We have also competed in various car shows within a 100-mile radius of Lincoln that wedrive the BelAir to and have won or placed many times.I have done my best to keep this Chevy as original as possible, from the unpainted engine to the originalstyle wide whitewall bias belt tires. It is most satisfying when people look at this Chevy and tell me how glad they are that I kept the car originalor, how they remember a Chevy similar to ours that was their family car.I am extremely grateful to my father-in-law Mel for giving me the opportunity to restore and preserve this,as the 1950 dealer brochure accurately called it . “The Beautiful BelAir.”Sincerely,Daniel BrintonLincoln, NE8National Chevy AssociationTMMarch 2013

Now Showing - Grandpa JimDear NCA and allOr should I say “Dear Dreamers.”Come on admit it.we all spend a lot of the day dreaming about cars.We dream about our first car, and there’s at least one we wish we had kept. The one that was famoustownwide for one reason or the other. We dream about our current car and what we should or shouldn’t change. Maybe a future car we’ve alwayswanted to own.We dream about cruising Main Street on a hot August night back in 1964. Not to mention the cruises wedream about taking next summer. There are the dreams of local legend, every town has one. A car was put away for some reason, usually asad one, and then forgotten, waiting to be discovered, maybe by you!! The barn find dream. Who would haveguessed Mrs. Jones has a 1950 Chevy ragtop in that old chicken coop?!Never stop dreaming because it can come true! It did for Nancy and me.On July 25, 1997, an old gent, two towns over, decided to “clean the barn.” We happened to be cruising byand spotted a 1951 Sport Coupe peeking out of a dark corner. The rest is history! He bought her new in Findlay, Ohio, and over 46 years racked up 33,192 miles. The ignition key was in aleather case from the dealer. The driver’s sunvisor isn’t faded because the visor sleeve was still in place. Theheater control tag was tucked in the owner’s manual and the spare hasn’t been on the ground. There was aViceroy in the rear ashtray with bright red lipstick on it. We’re sure there’s an interesting daydream there. In our 15 years of ownership we lowered her 2 1/2 inches, reupholstered the seats in stock cloth and added a6 volt alternator, radials and mags.See you down the road and like the song says, “Hold on tight to your dreams.”Grandpa JimLewis Run, PAMarch 2013National Chevy AssociationTM13
