Danielle Laraque-Arena, MD, FAAPDanielle Laraque-Arena, MD, FAAP, was named the President of SUNY UpstateMedical University September 10, 2015, and assumed the role of PresidentJanuary 14, 2016. She is the former Chair of the Department of Pediatrics andVice President of the Maimonides Infants and Children’s Hospital of Brooklynand Professor of Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine (InvestigatorTrack) and Yeshiva University. Dr. Laraque-Arena completed her medical studiesat the University of California at Los Angeles. She received the Roy MarkusScholarship (1977-1981) in support of her medical studies. Her internship andresidency were completed at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where shewas also a Robert Wood Johnson Fellow in General Academic Pediatrics (198486). Her fellowship research focused on lead poisoning and calcium status inchildren. During the decade 2000-2010, she served as Professor of Pediatricsand Professor of Preventive Medicine and the endowed Debra and Leon BlackProfessor of Pediatrics, Chief of the Division of General Pediatrics andVice Chair for Public Policy and Advocacy at the Mount Sinai School ofMedicine, Department of Pediatrics. During that time she was the PrincipalInvestigator and Director of the joint General Pediatrics and Internal MedicineMount Sinai Faculty Development Program for Primary Care, Health Resourcesand Services Administration Clinician-Research Fellowship, the Co-PrincipalInvestigator/Co-Director for the T32 Research Training Program in Environmental Pediatrics and the Co-Director for the T32 Research Training Programin Primary Care and Health Policy. She has trained countless fellows, residentsand medical students. Dr. Laraque-Arena is the recipient of numerous awards.She has been continuously funded since the early 1990s and has authored over100 papers, numerous chapters, media and educational materials and givenover 150 invited presentations.Dr. Laraque-Arena founded three separate child protection, multidisciplinaryteams evaluating and treating abused and neglected children. She began (2011)the only child abuse pediatrics ACGME fellowship program in New York state.Her community-based participatory research over the past three decades hasfocused on injury and violence prevention in children and youth. In the pastdecade, she has focused her attention on defining system changes that willfacilitate the integration of the identification, diagnosis and treatment ofchildren’s mental health problems in primary care settings. She is boardcertified in pediatrics and child abuse pediatrics.Dr. Laraque-Arena is the Past President of the Academic Pediatric Association.She was the 2001 United States Public Health Service Primary Care Policy Fellow(representing the American Academy of Pediatrics) and a former member of the2National Institute of Mental Health Standing Committee on Interventions forDisorders Involving Children and Their Families (2006-2010). She served ascommittee member on the New York State (NYS) Children’s Plan, is a memberof the NYS Medicaid Redesign Team Behavioral Health Subcommittee andHealth Homes: Child Team (2011); the New York State Department of Healthand Mental Hygiene Workgroup on Health Disparities in Treatment in TeachingFacilities, the NYS Emergency Medical Services for Children Advisory Committee(2013-2015), and the NYS DOH Integrated Care Workgroup. She served asmember to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies Committee onIntegrating Primary Care and Public Health (2011). She served as the New YorkState American Academy of Pediatrics District II Chair (2011-2015). She is anationally and internationally recognized expert in injury prevention, childabuse, adolescent health risk behaviors and in the issues critical to health caredelivery in underserved communities.She was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and immigrated to the United States in1962. She is multilingual (French, Creole, Italian and English). Dr. LaraqueArena is married to Luigi Arena, MD, PhD and the mother of two, Marc AnthonyArena, BA, MA, and Julia Marie Arena.3

McCormick, MD, ScDDr. McCormick is a pediatrician with a second doctorate in health servicesresearch, with all of her postgraduate training at Johns Hopkins. In 1987, shejoined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School,and, in 1991, she became Professor and Chair of the Department of Maternal andChild Health at the Harvard School of Public Health and Professor of Pediatrics.She is currently the Sumner and Esther Feldberg Professor of Maternal and ChildHealth in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the HarvardT.H. Chan School of Public Health, Professor of Pediatrics at the HarvardMedical School and Senior Associate for Academic Affairs in the Department ofNeonatology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.Her research has focused on the effectiveness of perinatal and neonatal healthservices on the health of women and children, with a particular concern for theoutcomes of very premature infants. She has been a senior investigator on theevaluations of two national demonstration programs (the Robert WoodJohnson Foundation National Perinatal Regionalization Program and, currently,the federal Healthy Start Program). In addition, she has provided significantscientific input, in a variety of roles, to the design and conduct of the InfantHealth and Development Project, the largest, multisite randomized trials of earlychildhood educational intervention, in particular serving as the principalinvestigator of the follow-up at 18 years of age.She is a member of the Institute of Medicine, among other organizations. While still in itsinfancy, the Medical School gained the distinction of awarding an MD degree toElizabeth Blackwell — the first woman to become a physician in the United States.In 1871, the Geneva medical faculty joined the Syracuse University College ofPhysicians and Surgeons, later known as the College of Medicine.In 1950, the College of Medicine was transferred to the newly organized StateUniversity of New York, where it was known as Upstate Medical Center. In 1953,SUNY administration approved a plan to develop MS and PhD degree programsin various biosciences. The Graduate Program in Medical Sciences became theSchool of Graduate Studies in 1961, then renamed the College of GraduateStudies in 1973. The College of Health Professions was added in 1971 and theCollege of Nursing in 1986.14
