Moving to BakersfieldJanet Logan is moving toBakersfield on March 1st to pursuea job in the Superior Court as aMediator. She will be missed butJanet countered, “I’m going tomiss all of you more!” She plans onkeeping in touch by returning toplay with Jo Melis on weekends.Janet has been a presenceat the club for 25 years—greetingpeople or helping others as needed. She helped with food preparationand parties, as well as providingadministrative support as a memberof the unit board for several yearsand the district board for a year. For over two years she team taughtwith Kevin Lane. She also mentorednewer players. Janet added, “I wantto thank all the bridge players thatallowed me to mentor them. It hasbeen my highest honor.” During thepast ten years, Janet volunteered tobe a fill-in as needed. In 1981 she married intoa bridge family. Janet and herhusband moved to England in theearly 90’s to work as consultantshelping transition utilities fromgovernment to public control. Whenthey transferred from Manchesterto London, Janet was not permittedto work with her husband, so shefound a bridge club and startedplaying duplicate. She commented,“I found bridge fun and extremelyaddictive. I play bridge because I’msocial. I like the cards, but it’s thepeople that keep me fascinated.”When they returned to the statesand later moved to Belmont Shore,Janet came to the club. She recalled,“It was Long Beach in its heyday soI played twice most days and threetimes on Friday. Most of all, Janet wants“to thank my countless partnersbecause, without you, I could notplay bridge. Of course, thanks tomy best partner of all time, Jo.”Janet ended by saying, “I’ll be back.Keep counting those cards, andvolunteer!” We look forward tocatching up with you then, Janet!by Lillian SlaterMoving to FloridaJoyce Henderson is moving toFlorida on March 5th! Having livedin Long Beach since 1964, she’srelocating to be closer to family whocan help with Joe and his healthissues.Last year, Joyce’s niece Stephanieand her family came to Long Beachfor nine months to help out, butthey missed Florida and movedback there. Since Joe’s family lives6in Tampa, Joyce and her niecewill be shopping for a house in anearby county—with Wauchula asa leading contender. Joyce and Joewill be living with Stephanie, herhusband, and their two teenagers(who largely stay in their rooms).Joyce has always played socialbridge, as well as playing online torelax after work. Largely self-taught,she also learned a lot from a videoby Omar Sharif, an excellent bridgeplayer and actor she liked—whichis why she bought the video. Omarplayed with lots of other experts andhad tips on how to hold your ownat the table. In 1999 Joyce retiredfrom teaching math in Long BeachUnified due to a stress-relatedillness. For years after retiring,Joyce played a lot of social bridgebut resisted coming to the clubbecause she thought it would be toostressful. Jane Reid finally draggedher there saying, “I want to playwith someone good.” They made adeal that Jane would teach Joyce thenewer bidding while Joyce wouldteach Jane how to play the cards.Joyce added, “I’m a student andadmirer of Mark Teaford [a previousteacher]. I had the joy of playingwith him after he took me underhis wing because we shared somecommon challenges.” This reporterwill miss Joyce’s dry sense of humorand her “game face.” Both wereinitially intimidating but, once I gotto know her, entertaining. WhenI mentioned the “game face” toJoyce, she quickly and resoundinglyresponded, “It’s FOCUS, FOCUS,FOCUS at the table!”During our safer-at-home period,Joyce plays on BBO twice a weekwith Thad Mikols and once withLarry Slutsky. Add joycehendy as aBBO friend to keep in touch. We’llmiss you at the club, Joyce!by Lillian SlaterMarch 2021table talk
