Sports Participation as a Protective FactorAgainst Depression and Suicidal Ideation inAdolescents as Mediated by Self-Esteem andSocial SupportStudy by: Lindsay A. Babiss, MS and James E. Gangwisch, PhDABSTRACT: Objective – Pariticipation in sports has been shown to be protective againstdepression and suicidal ideation, but little is known about what factors mediate theserelationships. No previous studies examined potential mediators between sportsparticipation and suicidal ideation and only one study explored possible mediatorsbetween sports participation and depression. Increased sports participation could protectagainst depression and suicidal ideation by increasing endogenous endorphin levels, boosting self-esteem, improving body image, increasing social support, and affectingsubstance abuse.FINDINGS: An increase in sports participation (Grades 7-12) leads to adecrease in depression by 25%. Suicidal ideation decreases by 12% with an increase in sportsparticipation.
