Features and BenefitsThe Compressor TechnologyCutting-edge magnetic bearing technology enables outstandingenergy efficiency and reliable, long-life operation. TheMagnitude chiller’s exceptional efficiency is due to the directdrive magnetic bearing compressor technology. This designeliminates the friction inherent in traditional centrifugalcompressors that can reduce efficiency.A digitally-controlled magnetic bearing system replacesconventional lubricated bearings. The direct drive motoreliminates the need for a lubricated gear box and associatedpower losses. The frictionless compressor shaft is thecompressor’s only moving component, and it levitates on amagnetic cushion. Sensors at each magnetic bearing providereal-time feedback to the bearing control system.Figure 1: Compressor Rotating AssemblyThe chillers utilize digital control electronics to proactivelymanage unit operation and provide control of external chilledwater and cooling tower pumps. The compressor runs at theminimum speed necessary to maintain cooling capacity and lift(which decreases with lower condenser water temperatures),thus minimizing energy usage over the entire range ofoperating conditions. The innovative design of the MicroTechE controller will help keep your chiller running efficiently.day in, day out, for years to come.Extremely Low Vibration LevelsAs a result of the magnetic bearings and low inertia design, thecompressor vibration levels are extremely low, minimizingvibration that could be transmitted to the structure. The unit is shipped with rubber waffle mounting pads. Springvibration isolators are usually not required.Low Sound LevelsContinuing the legacy of industry-leading sound levels, theMagnitude chiller has lower sound levels than comparablysized centrifugal chillers.Oil-Free Design BenefitsTotally Oil-Free Operation Greater EfficiencyWith no oil to coat the heat transfer surfaces, a gain inheat exchanger efficiency can be realized. No Oil Loss Sustainable PerformanceLow Operating CostsThe Magnitude chiller Integrated Part Load Value (IPLV) isextremely low when compared with any other chillers in thistonnage range - as low as 0.312. (See page 6 for IPLVdefinition and discussion). There is a potential for significantenergy savings at part load and lower ambient temperaturescompared to fixed-speed chillers.Sustainable PerformanceAll oil-lubricated chillers will deposit oil on heat transfersurfaces and eventually lose some efficiency. Since theMagnitude chiller uses a positive pressure refrigerant (HFC134a) and has no oil, the industry-leading efficiency can bemaintained for the life of the chiller. Additionally, over timenegative pressure chillers (such as those using HCFC-123)may draw air and moisture into the system, which cansignificantly increase energy consumption.Ultra-Smart ControlsIt is only fitting that this revolutionary chiller design bematched with the advanced Daikin McQuay MicroTech control technology to give you the ultimate in chillerperformance and control. Our control design includes manyenergy-saving features and interface enhancements not foundin any other unit controller system on the market today.Cat 604-3With no possibility of oil loss at light loads or due to wornseals, the original energy saving efficiency can bemaintained for the life of the chiller. No Oil Handling Equipment Greater ReliabilityWith magnetic bearings operating in a magnetic electricalfield instead of oil-lubricated bearings, the oil handlingequipment is removed. No need for: oil pumps oil reservoirs oil coolers oil filters water regulating valves oil relief valves oil system controls, starter, piping, heaters, etc.that are needed to maintain oil quality. These devices canbe a fault source in traditional chillers, and removingthem significantly increases unit and system reliability. No Oil System Reduced Maintenance CostsWith oil removed from the system, oil samples, oilchanges, oil system maintenance, oil filter changes andleaks are eliminated.5

Features and BenefitsOpen Choices BAS FlexibilityIntegrated Variable Frequency DrivesThe exclusive Open Choices feature provides seamlessintegration and comprehensive monitoring, control, and twoway data exchange using industry standard protocolsLonTalk , BACnet or Modbus . Open Choices offerssimple and inexpensive flexibility to use the BuildingAutomation System of your choice without an expensivegateway panel. Open Choice Benefits include: Easy to integrate into your BAS of choice Factory- or field-installed communications module Integrated control logic for factory options Easy-to-use local user interface Comprehensive data exchangeA Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) modulates compressorspeed in response to load and evaporator/condenser pressure.VFD technology significantly reduces power input at part loadoperation and at lower than design ambient temperatures.Compliance with ASHRAE Std. 90.1According to ASHRAE, chillers usually spend 99% of theiroperating hours at part load conditions and most of this time atless than 60% of design capacity. Thus, the part load efficiencyof chillers is all-important.ASHRAE Standard 90.1 was developed to assist owners anddesigners make informed choices on a buildings design, systems and equipment selection. Magnitude chillers cansignificantly exceed ASHRAE 90.1 minimum efficiencyrequirements. The VFD can dramatically reduce annual energy costs whenthere are long periods of part load operation and/or lowcompressor lift (lower condenser water temperatures). Theattributes of VFD drives produce one of the industry's mostefficient single-compressor chillers based on the all-importantIPLV value. See IPLV/NPLV Defined inset for details on theAHRI IPLV efficiency rating. An additional benefit of a VFD is improved power factors. Thepower factor will be 95% at 500 tons (AHRI conditions) withthe M3 low harmonic option, and 91% for the M2 standardVFD (at 500 tons), which may help reduce power costs. The use of a VFD on centrifugal chillers also provides anexcellent method of reducing motor starting inrush-even betterthan “solid state” starters. Starting current can be closelycontrolled since both the frequency and voltage are regulated. This can be an important benefit to a building's electricaldistribution system. Low inrush current at startup is also idealfor operation with backup or emergency power systems andcan reduce the size of backup generators.Optional Harmonic FilterIPLV/NPLV DefinedPart load performance can be presented in terms ofIntegrated Part Load Value (IPLV), which is based onAHRI standard rating conditions (listed above), or NonStandard Part Load Values (NPLV), which is based onspecified or job site conditions. IPLV and NPLV are basedon the following weighting equation from AHRI 550/590:IPLVorNPLV 10 .01 0 .42 0 .45 0 .12 ABCDUsing kW/ton, where:A kW/ton (or COP) at 100%B kW/ton (or COP) at 75%C kW/ton (or COP) at 50%D kW/ton (or COP) at 25%WeightingThe percent of annual ton-hours of operation near the fourrated load points are as follows: 1% of operating ton-hours in the bin range 93 100%load (represented by the rating at 100% load) 42% of operating ton-hours in the bin range 62 92%load (represented by the rating at 75% load) 45% of operating ton-hours in the bin range 37 61%load (represented by the rating at 50% load) 12% of operating ton-hours in the bin range 0 36%load (represented by the rating at 25% load)6An optional factory-mounted and wired or field mounted andwired, passive harmonic filter is available for the WME 500.Although the harmonic characteristics of the standard VFDdrive are acceptable in the vast majority of applications, thisfilter is a cost effective option for those applications thatrequire reduced harmonics. Under most application conditions,it is guaranteed to meet the IEEE Standard 519 for harmoniclevels.Onboard Refrigerant Containment SystemPumpout systems are required on many jobs to collect andcontain the refrigerant charge when access to internal chillercomponents is required for service. Magnitude condensers aredesigned to hold the entire unit refrigerant charge ( 90% fulland at 90 F (32 C) ambient temperature). When service isrequired, the refrigerant charge can be pumped down into thecondenser by compressor operation and use of a refrigeranttransfer unit. Elimination of the cost and space requirements ofan external storage tank is a significant Daikin McQuayadvantage.Unit Control FeaturesThe Magnitude chiller control system consists of three majorcomponents: the unit control panel and the operator interfacepanel and the VFD power panel. The touch screen panel is onan adjustable arm so that it can be positioned comfortably forthe operator. The control panel contains a USB port fordownloading the unit's fault history, major parameter trends, and unit operating manual that is stored in memory.Cat 604-3

Features and BenefitsBy constantly monitoring chiller status and real time data, theMicroTech E controller will automatically take proactivemeasures to relieve abnormal conditions or shut the unit downif a fault occurs. For example, if a problem occurs in thecooling tower and discharge pressure starts to rise, thecontroller will automatically hold the load point and activatean alarm signal. A further rise in pressure will initiatecompressor unloading in an effort to stay online. If thepressure continues to rise, the unit will shut off as a safetyfeature.Demand limit control- Maximum motor current draw can beset on the panel, adjusted from a remote 4-20 ma signal, or setvia the BAS interface using the Open Choices feature. Thisfeature controls maximum demand charges during high usageperiods.User-Friendly Touch Screen PanelSafe Power Interruption - In the event of a power failure, thecompressor motor acts as a generator, providing power for thebearing control system during coast down. It also has a backupbearing system.Operation simplicity was one of the main considerations in thedevelopment of the MicroTech E controller. The operatorinterface is a 15-inch, Super VGA color touch-screen monitor, mounted on an adjustable arm. Key operating parameters andsetpoints are easily accessible. For added convenience, the unit Operating and Maintenancemanual is viewable on the touch-screen panel.Figure 2: MicroTech E Home ScreenStaging Options (Multiple Chiller Installations)- “The WMEonboard chiller controls are designed to offer chiller stagingand loading options for up to eight WME chillers on multiplechiller plant configurations. Contact the Chiller Applicationsdepartment for more information on this capability.”Quality StandardsAHRI CertificationWe have an on-going commitment to supply chillers thatperform as specified, and participate in the AHRI CertificationProgram. On-going performance verification of chillercapacity and power input plus AHRI certified selection outputprovide the owner with specified performance in accordancewith the latest version of AHRI Standard 550/590.LEED Building owners who wish to pursue Leadership in Energy andEnvironmental Design (LEED ) Green Building Certification, the performance of the WME may contribute points towardsEnergy and Atmosphere (EA) Credits 1 and 4.The MicroTech E controller's memory retains a record of faultsand the time/date stamp. The controller memory (no batteriesrequired) retains the fault history for troubleshooting andmonitoring unit performance. The MicroTech E controller can record and plot watertemperatures, refrigerant pressures, and motor load in order totrend performance. These values can also be downloadedthrough a convenient USB port in the control panel, andexported into a spreadsheet for further evaluation and recordpurposes.MicroTech E Controller Increases Chiller EconomySmart features that optimize operating efficiency have beenincorporated into our MicroTech controls:Direct control of water pumps- Digital output relays provideautomatic lead-lag of the evaporator and condenser pumps, permitting pump operation only when required.Chilled-water reset- Accomplished directly on the unit orremotely by resetting the leaving water temperature based onthe return water temperature. Raising the chilled water setpointduring periods of light loads can dramatically reduce electricalconsumption.Cat 604-3Points earned for EA Credit 1 are awarded based on overallbuilding efficiency. The great efficiency of the WME willcontribute to the total points earned for this credit.EA Credit 4 qualification is partially determined by tonnageand refrigerant quantity. Vessel stack and tube count selectionswill affect the quantity of refrigerant in the chiller. Most WMEconfigurations will qualify for EA Credit 4.
