Design a Zoo ProjectCCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.G.A.1Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons bycomposing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply thesetechniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.G.A.1Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computingactual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at adifferent scale.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.G.B.4Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solveproblems; give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference andarea of a circle.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.G.B.6Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area oftwo- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.RP.A.3Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples:simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percentincrease and decrease, percent error.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.2.CApply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide rational numbers.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.3Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with nd the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationshipbetween two quantities.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.2Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b 0, and userate language in the context of a ratio relationship.

Specifics The zoo must include at least ten different animals.Animals must be bought in pairs. The minimal area for each animal must be followed. The chart lists the area neededfor one animal.Research to find special needs for each of your animals.o Some animals may not be in the vicinity of certain other animals.o Some animals require certain items in their habitat such as a body of water, running space, or trees. These should be shown on your final blueprint.o Some animals require cages or aquariums, while others need high fences.o Some animals require a controlled climate.o You must be concerned about the animals’ needs! The zoo’s cost must come in under 25,000,000.Cost per 100 square feet (one square)o Exhibits: 2500 per squareo Other buildings (including restrooms): 2000 per squareo Walkways: 500 per squareComplete the Area worksheetMake a blueprint of your zoo on graph paper.o Each square is 100 square feet (10 feet x 10 feet).o You must include walkways (30 feet wide) and restroom buildings(minimum 20 feet x 20 feet).o Concession stands, gift shops and other buildings are allowed if they fit thetheme are optional.o Label each exhibit and building. Include where special things are located inthe exhibit (trees, water, etc.). State the area for the individual exhibits andbuildings.Name your zoo and decorate your blueprint.Be creative!Additional options Designs could center on certain geographic habitats (rainforests, desert, arctic, etc.)Adapted from More Than a Worksheet by Sarah Wiggins
