WHY SPEECH AND LANGUAGE MATTERSWhy Speech and Language Matters7Speech, language and literacy therapycan be a lifesaving service for a child withcommunication challenges. Many peopleknow that speech therapy can improve achild’s ability to understand language andexpress thoughts, ideas and feelings. Theymay also be aware that speech therapycan help a child speak more clearly orimprove stuttering. What may not be wellknown is that speech, language and literacytherapy can improve independent problemsolving skills, improve social skills, increaseindependence, improve self-esteem and as aresult provide a better overall quality of life.It is well documented that children needto be reading proficiently by fourth grade,as research shows that young studentsare transitioning from “learning to read” to“reading to learn” during third and fourthgrade. Current data reveals that three out offour children who struggle with reading inthird grade never catch up and are four timesas likely to drop out of high school. The U.S.Department of Education statistics revealthat high school dropouts are more thantwice as likely as college graduates to live inpoverty, and over 80% of the incarceratedpopulation is comprised of high schooldropouts. These statistics illustrate the vitalimportance of early diagnosis and therapyfor children with challenges related tospeech, language and literacy.Failing to treat childhood language disorderscan lead to low self-esteem and life-longproblems such as limited employmentoptions, emotional and psychological stress, and increased likelihood for interactionswith the justice system and incarceration. The California RiteCare Childhood LanguageCenters want to ensure that children acrossCalifornia with communication challengeshave access to therapy services so that theycan develop the skills necessary to findacademic, social, and vocational success andbe productive members of society.

5 Easy Ways to Give With Tax-SmartDonations Before December 31stYEAR-END GIVING OPTIONSYou can still make an impact this year! There are many ways to give to the CaliforniaScottish Rite Foundation or your local RiteCare Childhood Language Center, several ofwhich offer attractive benefits to you while supporting the important work we do.Here are five popular ways you can make a difference this year:Give Cash, Check or Pledge. Giving Cash, a Check or a Pledge is the simplest way you cansupport our current needs. To document a cash gift of any amount, you must have a datedreceipt from the California Scottish Rite Foundation, so make certain you receive one. Acanceled check is sufficient for gifts less than 250.Give Appreciated Stock or Other Property. When you give appreciated stock or propertyto benefit the California Scottish Rite Foundation or the local RiteCare Childhood LanguageCenter of your choice, we will sell it and you will eliminate all the capital gains tax youwould have paid had you sold it. Your gift will be deductible at the day of delivery’s full fairmarket value (assuming you have held it for more than one year).Donate an Insurance Policy. A gift of a life insurance policy you no longer need makes aperfect year-end gift. To qualify as a deductible gift, the California Scottish Rite Foundationmust become the policy owner. For most types of insurance policies, your tax deduction isusually the cost basis or the fair market value of the policy, whichever is less.Make a Gift from your IRA. If you are 70½ or older, you can make a difference bytransferring any amount up to 100,000 annually directly from your IRA. The transferdoesn’t generate taxable income or a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do notitemize your tax deductions.Invest in a Life Income Plan. A life income gift providesyou with payments for the rest of your life and theCalifornia Scottish Rite Foundation or local RiteCareChildhood Language Center of your choice with supportthereafter. If you use appreciated securities that you’veowned longer than a year to fund the gift, you will beentitled to an income tax deduction based, in part, on thecharitable portion of the securities’ full value, in additionto eliminating up-front capital gains tax.9Contact Lynne Elwan, Major Gifts Officer at 714-547-7325for helpful tips about getting the most from your gift thisyear while benefiting the Children, Students and Veteranswe serve.
