EIGHT STEPS TO SUCCESSEIGHT STEPS TO SUCCESSThe selling process consists of eight very unique and importantsteps – greeting, qualifying, presentation, special deal, trial close, close, deposit, and follow-up. If you take too many shortcuts orfail to recognize each step of the process, your chance of making a sale will severely diminish. Whether you’re an “Old Pro” orjust beginning a new career in sales, these eight steps are exactly the same, no matter what you sell. If your prospect has anapparent want or need of the product–yet does not buy–it’s likely due to the sales technique instead of the product. Remember:The basic steps of sale never change! With practice, the sooneryou recognize each phase of the sales process, the easier thesale will happen. Let’s take a closer look and review the eightbasic steps.fits. Don’t waste their time or yours talking about unimportant features. During any demonstration, be sure and ask the prospecttheir opinion, too. If you’re tellin’ you ain’t sellin’! Never say anything negative about the competition, but instead, learn the weakpoints of the competition and sell the positive points of Wellcraft. GREETING: You’ll never get a second chance to make a goodfirst impression. The sale happens in the first five minutes, or itdoesn’t happen at all regardless of the total time spent with theprospect. Good first impressions are extremely important in theselling process. Greet every prospect right away and introduceyourself (by name) with a handshake and a smile. This approachsure beats the world’s oldest cliche: “Hi can I help you?” Nomatter what you say then, you’ll always hear the standard reply:“No thanks, just looking.” If you ask a question, make sure it willbe responded to with a positive answer, It is also important to findout the customer’s name and use it often. QUALIFY: Never stop qualifying your prospect even after thesale! What is qualifying? Qualifying is the technique of askingspecific questions to determine the wants and needs of yourprospect. Specific questions that should always be prefaced with:Who, What, When, Where, How and Why We’ll name thosetypes of questions open-ended because they require yourprospect to talk with you instead of simply answering your questions with a yes or no. Open-ended questions will also help asalesperson maintain control of the selling process by leading theprocess by leading the prospect towards good decisions.Customers buy for one reason only. Emotional satisfaction. Themore immediate the gratification is, the faster they will buy! It isimportant to find out what budget the customer has set, as youcan always move a customer up in price and size, but it isextremely difficult to move him down. PRESENTATION: Nearly all products (and many services)must be demonstrated to be believable and eventually purchased. This does not imply, however, in order to sell boats in thewintertime, you must take them out for a test ride. Quite theopposite. You need to first establish if you have a qualifiedprospect. Through effective questioning, you will determine whatmodel, power, equipment, style or other important features yourprospect wants and needs. Once you have a better idea of yourprospect’s needs and wants, then you’ve earned the right toshow and demonstrate your product. Try to choose only one boatthat fits your prospect’s needs. Picking more than one boatrequires decision and more time of the salespeople. “I have justthe boat you are looking for.” Don’t be a tour guide, or attempt toshow them every model. Be sure to listen very carefully andbecome an active listener. Think of yourself as an assistant buyerwith your prospect. Speaking too soon or often could cause youto blow the sale. Whenever you show your product’s features, besure to get your prospect involved in the demonstration. Showand demonstrate only those features that are the most importantto your prospect, then set the hook by explaining product bene-6Generally, the retail customer will only remember approximately3 points about your presentation a day later, so make sure heremembers the strongest and/or most critical points. Remember, you are also selling yourself, and many times the sale is madebecause the customer really likes the salesperson. Don’t sellyour Wellcraft dealership short; stress service, inventories, facilities, longevity, etc. Make sure that you have all your facts and figures right and that they are realistic! SPECIAL DEAL: (Reasons to buy today!) Buying decisionsare rarely determined by price alone. Even though price is important, it’s usually out-weighed by other buying considerations suchas availability, color, features and selection. By contrast, something that appears to be a good deal to you, may NOT be a gooddeal for someone else. Professional salespeople learn to presentbenefits instead of features as best reasons to buy the productnow. TRIAL CLOSE: THE ABC’s of closing. (Always Be Closing.)The trial close should be used often to test the prospect’s interest and will help you determine if and when the prospect is likelyto buy. Trial closing is like taking someone’s buying temperature. We determine how hot the prospect is by asking open-endedquestions. Here are a few examples of trial closing questions:“How does this model look to you?” “Does this boat have whatyou’re looking for?” “What sort of payment range did you have inmind?” “How does this Wellcraft compare with other boats you’veseen?” Remember also that some objections are very likely tocome up during the trial closing process too. But that’s a positivesignal. That means your prospect is truly interested and givesyou time to pause and think about your next response. The bestsalespeople actually learn how to anticipate objections beforethey happen. When you get hit with an objection, remember thissimple formula for overcoming objections: Listen, Acknowledge,Question, Think and Confirm. CLOSING: The more you practice, the more you’ll sell. There’sno such thing as a good salesperson who’s a poor closer, If youcan’t close, you can’t sell. Another big difference between trialclosing and closing is commitment. Closing should never be amystery. You’ll know when to close because all objections arebehind. The most important rule about closing is: Ask for theorder! DEPOSIT: What you should say if you can’t get paid in full. When you ask for a deposit try: “How much can you leave withus today? Instead of “I’ll need 10% down to hold this price duringthe show.” The more money you get at the time of sale, the morecommitted your customer is. FOLLOW-UP: The average salesperson typically asks aprospect to buy only once. Unfortunately, that’s true. But thatdoesn’t mean all prospects are just tire kickers. Boat buyerstoday are no different than before, only their needs havechanges. Personalized selling gets the job done today. Sell yourself, sell your dealership, sell Wellcraft and follow up often.7
