Frosh ProgramCHASS F1RST, First-Year Experience Programs, prepares students for a successful transitioninto a large research university environment that promotes academic and student success.CHASS F1RST provides first-year students with the tools, experiences, and opportunities to besuccessful at UCR and beyond. The program encourages student academic achievement, socialintegration, and cultivates self-development along with a strong supportive network of peers,staff, and faculty.Goals:1. Achieve Academic Excellence: Develop academic pathways and strategies toincrease student success through transitioning successfully to a university setting.2. What is a Learning Community?A learning community builds a community of learners among students, faculty, teachingassistants and peer educators. Learning communities allow students to be actively engaged in asustained academic relationship with faculty and other students.Students start together in their selected learning community and move through a set of coursestogether. The central component of the learning community program is CHFY 007: CHASSF1RST Learning Community Workshop, a 1-unit course.Benefits of participating in a learning community: Greater sense of belonging and Improves student retention andmotivation Increased student-faculty interactionpersistence Mentorship from current UCR Development of higher order analyticskillsRundergraduates Guaranteed courses each quarter**Number of guaranteed courses varies each quarter depending on which program a student enrolls in.RCHFY 007The CHASS F1RST Learning Community Workshop (CHFY 007) is a 1-unit course linked toeach learning community. Workshops meet weekly for 50 minutes and are led by peereducators who are current undergraduate students. Students will be provided with clearexpectations of what will be expected of them as college students and members of the UCRcommunity. Embedded in the curriculum are collaborations with campus partners like CHASSAcademic Advising, the Library, and the Career Center to connect you to this resources earlyon.In the workshop, you will adopt new study strategies conducive to succeeding in university levelcourses, become a more fluent and persuasive writer and thinker, learn how to budget yourtime, and connect with the many resources and services offered at UCR.
