DTE) area, we have a Locksmith Association Guardian. Larry Walker has been the installer and repair person for the power company for 32 years. He is now the only employee who iscalled to go to any MichCon/DTE facility in the state of Michigan. Larry coordinates the installation of doors, electrical panels and locks. One such item is calledthe “Safety Interlock”. This allows the technicians to get to the transformersafely. Besides his regular routine of duties, there are many emergencies Larry iscalled upon to repair.Larry briefly attended college after graduation from Chadsey HS in Detroit. His working career started at Great Lakes Steel Co. where he worked for sixyears. When the Company had a stockpile of products, many employees, including Larry, were sent to Zugg Island (an Island in Lake St. Clair). He recalls: “Itwas very dirty work because the residue got into my clothes and skin and it was very hard to wash out.” After his second stockpile stint from his regular job, he decided to quit.Larry then attended a carpenter’s trade school and apprenticed in home and commercial construction. When he became a Journeyman, locks were an integral part of his work. He also enrolled in the FoleyBelsaw Locksmith School and received his certification. Soon after that time he heard about LSA andjoined when we were meeting in Ferndale. In 1979, Detroit Edison hired Larry as an Assistant Locksmith.Upon the retirement of his mentor in 1983, Larry was promoted to the head position. He is very active in his church and in keeping the up security of the building. He is married and hasthree married daughters and five grandchildren. Larry stated: “I am still pursuing what is new in the Locksmith Industry. I would also like to add that if any member would like excellent advice on door installationor repairs and door closers, Larry is among the best!— byLSAOfficersPresident—Kevin Thompson (586) 716-1177Vice President—Kelvin Heath (313) 647-6275Secretary—Bryan Guerin (810) 656-5221Treasurer—John Shamass (586) 296-2438Sargent-At-Arms—Jason Snyder (313) 330-6778Newsletter—William M. Thank you so much & again for that van tool drawer cabinet with the cubbies at October's LSA meeting. Let me tell you what you've done for me, you can't know, Itwas just the night before I happened upon an old wooden buffet / credenza being discarded and I put it in mynew (to me) van, at that time for transport. And that's where it was when I arrived at our meeting, mybrother Robert, (AKA "Bob") pointed out the metal cabinet. He extolled the benefit to me and said I shouldask Kevin who in turn asked me to ask Al whom told me to ask you! Life’s Ironic, I spent the following dayinstalling both of those in an "L" configuration and that cabinet swallowed my three tool boxes and prettymuch was able to accommodate every tool I had! I also impressioned a key (Successfully yet!) to the Thandle cabinet at the bottom and prepared a cam and that is back in service without a bungee cord! I cut offthe legs and mounted a bench vise to the credenza and that holds my duplicator, grinder, pin kits and benchtools in the drawers. Now I'm able to carry a small hardware inventory. It has changed the way I feel and do business as a professional locksmith, in fact, till now, I hadn't felt orwas able to appear as a professional locksmith having 'everything' rattling around the van floor scattering andscratching brand new hardware. The transformation is astounding to my personal evolution as a locksmith, Ican't thank you enough. .“Qwik-QwizQ): From bow to tip, aFord 10 cut door lockdecodes to 235311.Which of the followingignition lock combinations (from bow to tip) ismost likely the correctone for the vehicle?A) 132544B) 123542C) 113245[answer on page 8]With gratitude expressed. V OLUME 22, N O .3P AGE 4P RESIDENT ’ S M ESSAGE —K EVIN T HOMPSON , CRLWow, It seems the colder it’s getting, the cheaper gasoline gets !By the time any of you get to read this, we'll have a new President. Of the United States, thatis. So, I won’t ruin it by telling you who I'm voting for. But, I do wish good luck to who everhas taken over as Commander and Chief of our great nation. It’s also a little late for me to remind everyone to get out and vote. Don’t complain if you didn’t.I do hope to see everyone at our November meeting. As always, expect great speaker(s) at themeeting. Here is another tip to possibly increase your sales, always "Look Up" when quoting any type of access control job. I wasrecently installing some hardware, for a security company, that was going to hook the locks up to a rather large company’saccess control system. I let them know what locks I would use and how much it would cost to install them. They were finewith the cost, it being a rather rush job. Before I was to install the locks, I had a word with their network administrator andpointed out that these brand new 8-foot mahogany doors didn’t have a door closer on them, and any type of access systemcould be useless if the doors didn’t automatically shut after someone uses the door. I saw the lights go on in their eyes andended with another 600 sale. So always "Look Up". If your not comfortable with door closers yourself, you could possiblytake our class on the 8th of November, "Complete Door Hardware & Door Closer" class.Thank You,-KevinM. Thompson, CRL— President, LSAE DUCATION & PRP N EWS — M ARC D EARING , CRLGood Day LSA Members,My hope is that all of your businesses are growing or at least - starting to pick up. I havenoticed a dramatic increase in my business over the past few months. Surprisingly, that increasemay have been right under my nose the whole time that I have been in business!I have realized there have been so many great opportunities for growth that I have turneddown. Our company has never made a real effort to service Door Hinges, Continuous Hinges, Pivots, or Closers. I can’t believe how many times I have serviced a business and either the doorslammed closed shut (because the closer needed adjusting) or the closer was leaking oil all over thefloor (a business liability). I really am neglecting these maintenance services. Talk about being clueless! With the encouragement of a fellow locksmith (Jeremy Ameen of Fenton Lock and Safe) I began tosee the opportunity to expand our business. Now, when our company arrives at a business to do a basic 95.00 ReKey job, we see the opportunity to increase the job to 195.00! We notice (and now point-out) any problems with theDoor Closers or Hinges to the person(s) in charge. Remember to make sure you are talking to the decision maker forthe company! This helps because you are showing the customer an obvious problem and they have to decide to fix it.Now you may be saying, “I don’t know anything about Door Closers or Complete Door Hardware!” Howironic. LSA is having a class titled Door Closers and Complete Door Hardware Saturday, November 8th,, locatedat Woodside Bible Church 27300 Hoover Rd, Warren, MI 48093. The class cost? 95.00.This is about how much (in labor) you can charge to install or adjust a single door closer! This is a great opportunity for the novice to learn more or the experienced professional to hone his/her skill. Hope to see you there -Marc A. Dearing, CRL— Education Director

The program went outof business in the early 1980s. This lesson excerpt on “Shimming Cylinders Open” is circa 1973. P AGE 7V OLUME 22, N O .3R AY ’ S W AYS - B Y R AY S INAI — A DD O NSLET’S TALK BUSINESSI’d like to talk about my auto mechanic. His name is Jack. You may say “what does an auto mechanic have to do with locksmithing, nothing at all”! However, business is business, whether you sell doughnuts for a living or provide skydiving lessons, thus, we are all in business. We sell a product or provide aservice and we deal with the public.Let’s talk about Jack. I personally like Jack, he’s a goodguy. He has a professional looking facility, a professional look about himself and his mechanics. I’ve even seen them putting on rubber gloves while tackling a vehicle. Theirclothes may not be spotless but they don’t look like they’ve been worn for a week anddragged through transmission fluid. What sets these guys apart from the rest? They speak intelligently, for one. Theydon’t speak down to their customers, even if the customer isn’t mechanical. They explainthe problems until you understand them. You receive a “laundry list” of problems that existwith your vehicle. Some, as they will tell you are urgent, others they will “keep note of andwatch”. The majority of their customers are repeat customers. Jack’s place is not thecheapest in town, in fact, just the opposite: they are more costly than the rest. What keepsus coming back? What are some of the attributes that any business should have to “keepthem coming back”?I have pointed some of them out already. The employees are professional in actionsand appearance. They are not condescending to their clients. They look over your situationcarefully and give a diagnosis of the problems. How many of you, when asked to repair or replace a lockset on a building, do justthat? Do you perform a survey of the perimeter of the building for security issues? Whynot? You say that you are too busy. That’s not what I’ve been hearing? Do you make suggestions regarding added security? Jack’s shop told me that my windshield washer pumpwasn’t working. Did I tell him, no, I had forgotten. Did I have him repair it? Of course!Do we automatically assume that any suggestions given to customers will be “shot down”,regarded as “too much money”, “we can’t afford it right now”!Why not make pro-active suggestions to your clients? Add a deadbolt, latch guard, window bars, etc. When you perform a lock change on a business ask two simple questions. “Are you giving any of these keys to your employees”? “Do you care if they makeduplicates of these keys”? If the answers are yes and yes, “Let’s talk about High SecurityCylinders on these doors”. As always, GO GET ‘EM!-by Ray Sinai“Education, Knowledge & Cooperation—
