TINA’S JOURNEY.Latest Weigh-inWhen Tina came to us, she was over 17kg (approximately 38lbs). That is roughlyequivalent to a 500lb human. So far, she has lost 2.31KG, which is just over 5lbs.5 lbs on a cat is close to 75lbs on a human frame.Overall, Tina is doing very well. The more weight she loses, the more active shebecomes and her personality and quirks become more apparent. She lovesattention in all forms and cannot get enough cuddles. The Weight-loss JourneyWe expect Tina to be at her healthiest weight at about 8 kg; however this is a moving target. With hermusculature and frame, this could change as she loses more weight and we are able to truly gauge her naturalsize. We expect she will be at a more ideal weight in 12 to 18 months. It should be noted though that weightloss of this scale is monumental - every gram counts and should be celebrated. Weight loss in a cat is a veryslow process and has to be monitored very closely. Cats can only lose 1% of their body weight per weekwithout overwhelming their liver. The main way we are helping her lose weight is through her diet and controlling the amount she is eating. Sheis on a Purina Veterinary diet called ‘Over Weight Management’, which is low in fat and calories, and has a highprotein-to-calorie ratio. Every 2 weeks, the amount of food she is fed is recalculated based on her metabolismand caloric needs, along with the amount of weight she has lost during that time period.Tina is encouraged to exercise as much as possible, however, this is still difficult. Her bones and joints are undera lot of stress from the extra weight she carries and she is in pain, which makes normal activity, like walkingacross a room, a challenge. Activities like jumping or stepping up are impossible. She is kept on dailymedications to help ease this pain and make the daily activities, including going to the litter box and movingaround, less painful. For Cat OwnersTo avoid obesity in your own pets, diet and exercise is important. Keeping them on a proper diet suited for thespecific breed, activity level and life stage of the animal, is imperative. Meal feeding your animals andmeasuring the adequate amount of food based on the animal’s caloric needs will also help. Ensure theyexercise daily and being mindful of the quality and amount of treats they receive. Limiting or avoiding givingtable scraps to them is also important. If you’re concerned about your pet’s weight, talk to your veterinarianabout weight management plans and foods. Weight loss in our pets needs to be controlled and done properlyto avoid causing health risks.continued on page 32

.Tina Update continued from page 2When an animal is obese, or even slightly overweight, we recommend diet alterations and tips to help makeexercise and feeding more beneficial for weight loss. For cats, one of my favourite tips it to take their kibblemeal and place it in small piles around the house. This allows them to hunt for their meal and keeps thementertained and moving. There are also food dispensing toys that you can purchase for both dogs a cats thathave holes in them for the kibble to drop through when the animal is playing with the toy. These also incorporate exercise and movement into the feeding. Accountability is a huge part of pet weight loss as well so itis important to schedule regular appointments with your veterinarian to have their weight and body condition monitored and tracked. This will also allow adjustments in weight loss plans and feeding guidelines tobe made accordingly.Keeping our pets at an ideal body weight can help extend their life expectancy by decreasing their chances ofdeveloping diseases such as diabetes, osteoarthritis, heart disease and cancer. Body fat is not classified asIN MEMORY OFROSEMARY MCCAINMCMILLIN50 Saunders Street (506) 455 - 3461Rosemary McCain McMillin was a benefactor of theFredericton SPCA who loved children andanimals. A Different Kind of Birthday PartySome parents may not think of the Fredericton SPCA whenconsidering birthday party options for their children, however, the Adoption Centre has become a popularlocation for Party Animals alike. Children over the age of sixare able to celebrate with their friends in a unique way thatalso is educational.Highlights of FSPCA birthday parties include the opportunityto play with Adoption Centre Animals, including dogs, cats, hamsters, rats, rabbits and more. A VIP, behind-the-scenes tour is also popular as itprovides a backstage view of the adoption centre, including the examination roomand dog kennels.Parents find the tours beneficial as children learn an optimal standard of care foranimals. Additionally, children learn about the activities that take place at theadoption centre so they understand the integral role the organization plays in the community. For booking or to find more information about Fredericton SPCA birthday parties, please contacteducation@frederictonspca.ca.**BOOKING NOW **In Memory of our PetsDonations have been made to the FSPCA in memory of beloved pets who have made adifference in someone’s life.Buddy & WinstonKitty McMullenPaul the CatTulasCharlieMaxRaffiTyChester & HollyOliverTiaZoeHersheyOpalTrixie“.all that we love deeply, becomes a part of us” Helen Keller5
