Fraternity and Sorority Life1

2

For more than 175 years, the DePauw experience has been markedby challenging academics, a vibrant and engaging campus life, and graduates who go on to lead lives of incredible purpose andaccomplishment. For many of our students, fraternity and sorority life has played acentral role in their development during four years on our Greencastlecampus. Twenty-five Greek-letter organizations make up the DePauwfraternity and sorority community. While a majority of theseorganizations belong to one of our four governing councils, our campusis also home to one local sorority and a Greek honor society.Being a part of our fraternity and sorority community meanslearning both in and out of the classroom setting, taking advantageof opportunities for involvement, such as leadership positions andservice projects. Membership in a Greek-letter organization is a lifelong commitment to fraternal values and relationship building andnetworking that extends well beyond DePauw. The student experienceat DePauw is filled with challenges, self-discovery, educational andsocial opportunities no matter what type of involvement you choose.I hope that you have fun, build long-lasting relationships and havemany transformational experiences along the way. Please know that ouroffice is a resource for any questions that you may have along the way.3

ACADEMICSLEADERSHIPIntellectual engagement is at the core ofa liberal arts education and continues tobe at the core of the fraternity and sororityexperience. Engaging with new ideas, exploring new areas of study and meetingnew people are the things that will shapeyour education at DePauw. These are thethings that will shape your experiencewithin the fraternity and sorority community.Scholarship is central to the values of eachof the chapter’s on DePauw’s campus.Fraternity and sorority life at DePauw presentsan incredible opportunity to develop yourleadership skills. You’ll take on one of themost challenging and invigorating tasks inleadership: the act of leading your peers. From managing a budget to coordinatingboard meetings to interacting with alumni, theopportunities to get involved are seeminglyendless. But leadership doesn’t stop withgetting involved with your individual chapter, because our Greek-lettered community isstrongest when its members are involved acrosscampus. From athletics to student governmentsto musical groups and other studentorganizations, fraternity and sorority leadersare involved shaping all facets of campus life.4

LIFELONG FRIENDSSERVICEOne of the most wonderful experiencesabout being involved in a fraternity orsorority are the life-long friendships you’llmake. You’ll get to know people you neverthought you’d meet. These relationshipswill expand your knowledge of majors, interests and cultures to name a few.And just as you’ll learn more about yourbrothers and sisters, you’ll come to knowmore about yourself. Upon graduating fromDePauw, the relationships you have forgedduring your undergraduate experiencewill continue through both personal andprofessional networks.A common goal among fraternity andsororities is a commitment to helpingothers through community service andphilanthropic endeavors. From service trips,to fundraisers, to volunteering with localcharities, our Greek-lettered communityputs a premium on giving back. Theseactivities offer college men and womenspecial opportunities to make a positivedifference in the lives of others, as well asopportunities to develop and grow fromthese experiences.5
