Transformer operationsRunning your steam locomotive with a Lionel transformer1Note!2Note!3Place your steam locomotive on Lionel orLionel-compatible O-31 or larger track. With track power OFF, connect the locomotive tether between the locomotiveand tender. The four-pin tender plug connects with the four-pin receptacle on thelocomotive. Connect the drawbar between locomotive and tender. The engine tether receptacle is “keyed” to allow the harness to be plugged in onlyone way.Power up your steam locomotive with your transformer. Your locomotive is designed to operate on 8-18 volts alternatingcurrent. Virtually all Lionel and Lionel-compatible alternating-current transformers are suitable; we recommend the TrainMaster Command model railroadcontrol system. Do not power your locomotive with direct current (DC). Damage tosensitive electronic components may occur. When you first power up your track, the locomotive will waitbetween 3 and 8 seconds as it “listens” for digital language from theTrainMaster Command Base (available separately). When it’s determined that it’son a conventional (non-Command) railroad, the locomotive’s headlight will illuminate and RailSounds will start up. At this point, the locomotive is in neutral.(This occurs when placing the locomotive on your railroad for the first time.Thereafter, it starts in forward after every three-second power interrupt.)Move ‘em out! Get your locomotive moving. Press the DIR button on your CAB-1 remote orLionel transformer. This sequences the Lionel Command reverse unit (R2LC) tothe next operating state. The R2LC alternates between three states: forward, neutral, and reverse. Adjust track voltage until your locomotive moves at your desired speed. Toincrease speed, increase track voltage. To decrease speed, reduce voltage. To stopthe locomotive, cut track power.3

Transformer operationsLocking your locomotive into a single operational stateRUNSMOKEPROGProgram/Run SwitchRear4ONdirection, then slow it down without stopping. Set the Program/Run switch to PROG.The locomotive is now “locked” into yourchosen direction. When you no longer want single-directionoperation, just slide the Program/Run switchback to RUN.OFFo select a single operational state foryour Lionel locomotive (example: forward only), you can deactivate the R2LC’ssequencing function with the Program/Runswitch, located on the right hand side, underthe locomotive’s cab.Get your locomotive moving in the desiredTSmoke Unit Switch(see page 19 for details)

Transformer operationsYour locomotive’s Odyssey System speed controlvoltage to compensate for uphill grades, etc.,but will prevent excessive voltage to thelamps and smoke unit. (In conventionalmode, these operate at track voltage, andexcessive voltage may lead to premature bulbburn-out.) If you wish to change the speed controlsetting, you must deactivate the speedcontrol, then reactivate at the newsetting. To turn speed control off, get your locomotive into neutral for at least 5 seconds.Press the horn/whistle button for 2-3 secondswhile lowering the throttle voltage to 1/4 offull power or at least three volts. Do not turnthe throttle off or speed control may notdeactivate. This can be difficult if you haveestablished a low speed control setting. Onceyou are in neutral, you can increase thetrack voltage before pressing the horn/whistle button and lowering the voltage. This willgive you more “room” to lower the voltage.(The speed control deactivates when it sees a3 volt change with horn/whistle pressed, regardless of initial voltage level.)ou can lock your locomotive into speedcontrol mode (ideal for low speed operation) so it will automatically compensate forgrades, or to simply maintain a specificspeed setting. To turn on the speed control, get your locomotive moving at the desiredspeed, in forward or reverse. Let it run atthe desired speed for at least 5 seconds. Pressand hold the horn/whistle button for 2-3 seconds as you increase the throttle by at least3 volts. Your locomotive will acceleratebriefly, then will return to your set speed onceyou release the horn/whistle button. As longas the throttle position is maintained at ahigher setting than the initial level, yourlocomotive will maintain a constant speed. Ifthe throttle is turned below the original level, your locomotive will slow down due to theavailable voltage decrease below the “set”level. To check if the speed control settinghas been “accepted,” turn up the throttle. You will see the lights brighten, but the speedwill remain constant. For best results, adjustthe track voltage about 3-4 volts above the“set” point. This will provide enough spareYNote!Speed control settings are retained in memory even if power is turned off. They will remain present until deactivated.5

Transformer operationsUsing your locomotive tender’s ElectroCouplerin the non-Command environmento use your locomotive tender’s ElectroCoupler in the non-Command environment, you must first couple a piece of rollingstock equipped with Lionel magnetic couplers directly to your locomotive tender’s rearElectroCoupler. The magnetic coupler on therolling stock will then react to the magneticfield generated by a Lionel remote-controltrack section (available separately). Placeyour rolling stock’s coupler “trigger disc”over the central coil of a remote-controltrack section and press “uncouple” on thecontroller. The magnetic field pulls the discdownward, and the coupler opens.TMagnetic coupler on the rolling stock coupledto the rear of your locomotive tenderRemote-controltrack sectionNote!Your locomotive tender’sElectroCoupler will NOT openmanually or by using aremote-control track section.Your locomotive’s RailSounds system—the basicsWhen you first apply track power, the locomotive’s RailSounds system produces soundsof the locomotive at rest. As the locomotivemoves, chuffing begins, increasing with thelocomotive’s speed. To silence the steam chuffing sound (whistle/bell are unaffected), slide the RailSoundsswitch to the OFF position before poweringup the locomotive. The whistle is activatedby using the lever or button on your transformer or CAB-1. Use the volume controlknob to raise or lower the level of sound.ionel RailSounds is the most realisticmodel railroad sound system in theworld. Your locomotive features digital samples from real-life steam locomotives for theultimate in realism.Begin by installing a 9-volt alkalinebattery in the tender. This ensures interruption-free operation of RailSounds. The battery clip is located in the tender. To removethe tender body, refer to the diagram on page7 for the Northern Pacific-style of tenderand on page 8 for the Southern Pacific-styleof tender.L6

Transformer operationsExperiencing the range of your locomotive’s RailSounds systemith RailSounds, you experience thesounds of real railroading like neverbefore. Simply put, it’s the most sophisticated, authentic model railroad sound system inthe world. And remember—coming frominside your Lionel locomotive’s tender arethe authentic sounds of the RailSounds digital sound system. No other electric train canoffer you authentic sounds. That’s thepower of Lionel. Variable chuff rate. Your locomotivespeed determines the steam chuff rate. MultiWhistleTM. Different whistlesevery time—a RailSounds exclusive. Authentic bell. Press BELL on yourCAB-1 or transformer to begin the effect, again to discontinue. Even the final “hit”is muted like the real thing. Reverse unit reset sound. Powerdown your track, wait for 3-5 seconds, and listen for the air-release sound—that’s the locomotive telling you its R2LCCommand reverse unit has just reset toforward operation. Shutdown sequence. No other modelrailroad sound system shuts down likeRailSounds. Turn off track power, andafter the air-release reset sound, you havetwo seconds to restart your locomotive. Ifyou’re done with operations, RailSoundswill commence with an authentic shutdown sequence about two seconds afterthe air-release reset occurs.must be installed forNote! Batteryshutdown sequence.WNotes on RailSounds Use the volume control dial, to adjustsound output. Listen for incidental locomotive soundsduring RailSounds operation. They’reautomatic and, of course, authentic. The 9-volt alkaline battery you installedensures continuous sounds, even duringshort track-power interrupts. Longer track-power interruptions(including locomotive derailments)cause RailSounds to shut down afterabout 7 seconds. For even more authentic RailSoundseffects, operate your locomotive in theTrainMaster Command environment. Seepage 12-13 for details.9

TrainMaster Command operationsYour locomotive in the TrainMaster Command environmentionel TrainMaster Command is the funand sophisticated model railroad control system from Lionel. Your locomotive features the R2LC reverse unit, which acts asboth a conventional reverse unit as well asthe key to unlocking many extra featureswhen you operate in Command mode.TrainMaster Command gives you thepower to operate multiple Command-equipped locomotives on the same track, atthe same time. It’s the most fun you canhave with electric trains, and it’s incrediblyeasy too! Just follow the directions below andyou’ll be on your way.To operate in Command mode, youneed a Command Base and a CAB-1remote. Find them both at your authorizedLionel retailer.L1Place your locomotive on Lionel orLionel-compatible O-31 or larger track. Make sure track power is OFF before placing it on track. Make sure your Lionel Command Base is ON and its communications wire is connected to the COMMON post on your Lionel transformer orthe U terminal on any of your installed PowerMasters. Once positioned on the track, increase track voltage to FULL (onPowerMaster, slide the CMD/CONV switch to CMD).2Address your locomotive with CAB-1.3Move ‘em out! Press ENG and 1 on the numeric keypad of your CAB-1 remote. Thiscommand is sent by CAB-1 to the Command Base, which then translatesyour commands into digital code. That code is sent around your railroad’soutside rails in the form of a digital “halo.” All Command-equipped Lionelslisten to this digital communication, but they do not respond until theyhear their own ID number. The digital language of TrainMaster Command—and not track power—controls the actions of Command-equipped Lionels. Track power is simplylike gasoline in the tank of your car—it gives you the power to go places, but it doesn’t tell you where to go or how fast to get there. All Command-equipped Lionels come factory-programmedwith an ID# of “1.” To change your locomotive ID#, see page 15. Throttle up or press any command button on CAB-1. Your locomotive will respond to your every command. Read on. The fun is just beginning!11

TrainMaster Command operationsReprogramming R2LC circuit board to restore featuresDue to the inevitable derailments, static, and the nature of electricity, it is possible that your R2LC could someday lose itssetup program. The symptoms of this condition would beunresponsiveness in Command mode. Thiscan be easily remedied by “reprogramming”your R2LC using the following steps.STEP 1: Move switch on locomotive fromRUN to PROGRAM.STEP 2: Plug-in Command Base.STEP 3: Place locomotive on track, thenturn on power to track.STEP 4: Press “ENG” then input locomotive’s ID#. Press “SET”.STEP 5: Press “ENG,” then the ID#,“AUX1”, then press the number 4.STEP 6: Turn off power to track and waitten seconds.STEP 7: Remove locomotive from track, move switch from PROGRAM to RUN.STEP 8: Place locomotive back on track, turn power on to track.STEP 9: Press “ENG” and ID#, then operate as normal.Maintaining your locomotive’s handrail antennaour locomotive handrails are morethan just model grab irons—they’rethe R2LC’s antenna for receiving CommandBase digital communications. Please handlethe locomotive carefully to avoid handraildamage. To ensure optimum reception, bothhandrails are insulated from the die-castshell. If your locomotive experiences difficulty receiving Base communications, check thehandrail ends in the cab and pilot for thepresence of insulating material. Ensure thateach insulator is present and enjoys a properfit. Finally, prevent the handrails from touching any part of the die-cast locomotive cab.Y16

Maintaining and servicing your LocomotiveLubricating your locomotiveelp your Lionel locomotive lead a longand productive life on your railroad bymaintaining it properly. We recommend you purchase a LionelLubrication and Maintenance Kit (partno. 6-62927), available from your Lioneldealer. Two basic rules to keep in mind:never over-lubricate (a smallamount will do), and avoid gettinggrease or oil on the locomotivewheels, contact rollers, or yourtrack.HYou’ll know your locomotive requireslubrication when visual inspection revealsdryness on the parts indicated in theillustration. Remove accumulated dirt anddust before lubricating, and always lubricateany locomotive emerging from prolongedstorage. Also, lightly lubricate theFRONTlocomotive side rods, drive rods, linkage, front and rear truck pivotpoints, and tender wheel bearingsafter each 25 hours ofoperation.Cab sparinglyOilsparinglyOilsparinglyCab ScrewsREAR17

Maintaining your locomotiveReplacing your steam locomotive’s lampsour steam locomotive is illuminated bytwo lamps. One is located directly behindthe boiler face, the other is behind the motorfor the firebox glow. During the course ofnormal operation, the lamps may requirereplacement. As the headlight bulb is integral to the front lighting board assembly andrequires a soldering operation, you may wishto take your locomotive to your AuthorizedLionel Service Center for this bulb replacement. The Lionel part number for this bulbis 610-8049-300.To replace the Firebox Glow lamp, removethe four cab screws (see page 17 for location). Carefully lift the shell away from theframe. Take care with the various wiringassemblies connected to the shell. Find theassembly containing the expired lamp. Thefirebox lamp is replaced by pulling the bulbup out of the mounting sockets. Replace itwith Lionel part No. 610-8082-019. Bothlamps are available from your AuthorizedLionel Service Center or Lionel Service. Seethe Lionel Service section on page 20 formore information. Reinstall the cab and thefour screws, taking care to not pinch anywires between the frame and body duringreassembly.YLionel partNo. 610-8082-019Your Southern Pacific steam tender backuplight is illuminated by one lamp located inthe rear of the tender body. During the courseof normal operation, the lamp may requirereplacement.Since this bulb requires a soldering operation to replace, you may wish to take yourlocomotive to your Authorized Lionel ServiceCenter to have this service performed. TheLionel part number for this bulb is610-8049-300. The lamp is available fromyour Authorized Lionel Service Center orLionel Service. See the Lionel Service sectionon page 20 for more information.NOTE: Press AUX2 to make sure the headlamp was not accidently turned off beforereplacing bulb.Note! The three red lights at the back of the Northern Pacific tender, as well as the twogreen front marker lights on both the Southern Pacific and Northern Pacific locomotives are LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) and are not user serviceable.18

Maintaining and servicing your locomotiveTire-Traction our locomotive is equipped with TireTraction. This means that two of thedrive wheels are fitted with rubber tractiontires to enhance tractive effort so your locomotive can pull many cars at once.Lionel has provided extra traction tires toreplace the installed traction tires if theywear out. Simply unscrew the drive rod nutfrom the wheel using a 4mm nut driver, slipoff the old traction tire and remove it fromunder the drive rod. Place the traction tire onthe wheel and re-tighten the drive rod nut. You’re now ready to pull that long freightback to the yard.YAdding fluid to your locomotive smoke generatoris first placed on the track and powered up,the smoke generator will be in a default“OFF” position. Using any function key onyour CAB-1 remote will turn the smoke generator on. Turning off the sound (AUX1-5) orresetting the engine (AUX1-0) will return thesmoke unit to the initial “OFF” position.Always keep a small amount of smoke fluidin the locomotive smoke generator; the generator
