GuimontAr Hyd Y NosLet us ever glory in the cross of Christ, our salvation and- our hope.Let us bow in homage to the Lord of Life, who was broken to make us whole. There is no greater love, as blessed as this: to lay down one’s life for a friend.Let us ever glory in the cross of Christ and the triumph of God’s great love.Let us make our journey to the cross of Christ, who surrendered glory and graceto become a servant of the great and small, that all people may know God’s face.Though his birth was divine, he knelt as a slave, to wash common dust from our feet.Let us tell the story of the cross of Christ as we share this heavenly feast. We become one body in the blood of Christ, from the great to the very least. When we eat of this bread, and drink of this cup, we honor the death of the Lord. 2000, Daniel L. BY THE WAY . . .Tomorrow we have the pleasure of welcoming Bishop Kevin Sweeney, the Bishop ofPaterson, to Saint Anthony’s to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation for our 11th Graders.Recently I sent out a letter to all those in our Confirmation program announcing mydecision to lower the age of Confirmation for our parish to the Fall of 9th Grade. This follows atrend that has been growing across the Paterson Diocese for the last five years. Although Imyself prefer the celebration of the sacrament in the high school years, I have been underpressure from a number of sources:A – the parents who would prefer it to be at an earlier age;B – the fact that all our neighboring parishes are celebrating the Sacrament earlier;C – the difficulties in scheduling for students who attend, by my last count, twenty different highschools across our area;D – the difficulty in securing catechists willing to teach in the high school program. This change will mean that Bishop Sweeney will actually visit us three times this Fall to confirmall our 9th, 10th, and 11th Graders. Please remember them all in your prayers. On Sunday, October 17 at 3:00 P.M. in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist inPaterson, Bishop Sweeney will present the annual Vivere Christus Awards. This award is givenannually to one individual or couple from each of the 109 parishes in the Paterson Diocese torecognize their involvement and commitment to their Catholic faith, and to their parish. This year’s recipient from Saint Anthony’s is Victor Tamburro. A life-long member ofSaint Anthony’s, Victor is an usher, a member of the 500 Club, a member of the Knights ofColumbus, and helps organize the annual Hawthorne Fire Department Mass each Fall. As ateenager, Victor was part of the Youth Group, and later on served a stint as the Youth Minister. There are two details about Victor’s involvement in Saint Anthony’s that are somewhat classic:first, together with his late father, he brought the old church bell currently sitting on the frontlawn down out of the tower when chimes were installed; and secondly, he is one of the menentrusted with mixing the zeppole dough at The Feast. You don’t get much more SaintAnthony’s than that. Attention all men: Be on the lookout in the bulletin for an announcement aboutSaint Joseph’s Workers, a new parish men’s initiative which will appear in the bulletin shortly. We are still live streaming Mass from Saint Anthony’s every weekday morning at7:30 A.M. and on Sundays at 10:00 A.M. I mention this both to remind you of the availability ofthis outreach for our parishioners who are homebound, and also as an advisory to those whoattend those Masses and whose image may appear on screen during the broadcast. This past week I had the pleasure of welcoming Father Daniel W. Murphy to SaintAnthony’s. A classmate of mine, Father Dan is the Pastor Emeritus of Saint Matthew the ApostleParish in Randolph. Father Dan will be helping us out on weekends from time to time in themonths ahead. 5

Please remember in your prayers Monsignor Joseph L. Ferrito, the Pastor Emeritusof Saint Pius X Parish in Montville who died this past week at the age of 90. A 1944 graduate ofSaint Michael’s School in Paterson, Monsignor Ferrito had been pastor in Saint Michael’s,Paterson and saint Vincent de Paul, Stirling before going to Montville. I had the pleasure ofhaving Joe as a religion teacher in high school, and as my second pastor, and the privilege ofbeing the homilist at his funeral. This Saturday marks the 20th Anniversary of the attacks on New York andWashington resulting death and destruction for so many individuals and families. In the annalsof the modern Papacy, it is relatively unheard of for the same non-liturgical text to be used bysuccessive popes. However, the following prayer was prayed by Pope Benedict XVI on his visitto the World Trade Center site in 2008, and again by Pope Francis when he visited theMemorial in 2015. The prayer was composed by sister Janet Baxendale, S.C. a staff member ofthe New York Archdiocesan Worship Office at the time. O God of love, compassion and healing,Look on us, people of many different faithsAnd traditionsWho gather today at this siteThe scene of incredible violence and pain.We ask you in your goodnessTo give eternal light and peaceTo all who died here –The heroic first-responders:Our fire fighters, police officers,Emergency service workers, andPort Authority personnel,Along with the innocent men and womenWho were victims of this tragedySimply because their work or serviceBrought them here on September 11, 2001.We ask you in your compassionTo bring healing to thoseWho, because of their presence here today,Suffer from injuries and illness.Heal, too, the pain of still-grieving familiesAnd all who lost loved ones in this tragedy.Give them strength to continue their livesWith courage and hope.We are mindful as wellOf those who suffered death, injury and loss6

On the same day at the Pentagon and inShankville, Pennsylvania. Our hearts are one with theirsAs our prayer embraces their pain and suffering.God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world:Peace in the hearts of men and womenAnd peace among the nations of the earth.Turn to your way of loveThose whose hearts and mindsAre consumed with hatred.God of understanding,Overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy,We seek your light and guidanceAs we confront such terrible events.Grant that those whose lives were sparedMay live so that the lives lose hereMay not have been lost in vain.Comfort and console us,Strengthen us in hope,And give us the wisdom and courageTo work tirelessly for a worldWhere true peace and love reignAmong nations and in the hearts of all.Amen.God bless you all,Father Ray7

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Canthis faith save him? .Indeed someone might say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Demonstrate yourfaith to me without works and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.”The letter of St. James clearly reveals that we can see faith in action. We are saved by Jesus, so faith isessential. Faith cannot be observed, but our works tell the story. The works of mercy, reflected in the judgement scene of Matthew, help us to examine how deep is ourfaith and how well it is expressed. Our care for the hungry, homeless, foreigner, the sick and dying is theexpression of compassion and our response to Jesus Christ in them. They are us.Much can be done, and thanks be to God, many around us are putting their faith into action. How can Ijoin them?HIS WORD TODAYBY REV. WILLIAM J.
