The region is hometo a scenic stretch of the New River, as wellas many state and local parks, and recreationareas. All of this means the New River Valley isperfect for outdoor adventures, including fishing,camping, golfing, hiking, biking, and much more.The New River Valley has hundreds of miles ofhiking, biking and horse-riding trails scatteredaround the region. This guide providesinformation about some of the most populartrails in the region, from paved bikeways neartown that are perfect for a stroll, to strenuoushikes on footpaths in the mountain wilderness.All of these trails include spectacular scenery,including wildlife, waterfalls, rock formations,and breathtaking vistas of the majestic BlueRidge Mountains.The guide provides information about 15 regionaltrails, including length, elevation, difficulty, keyfeatures, nearby amenities, and directions onhow to get there, including G P S coordinates ofthe trailheads. Claytor LakeCLAY TOR LAKE STATE P ARK is a park on the shore ofa 4, 00 acre man made lake created by a hydroelectricdam on the New River. The lake is a popular shing andboa ng des na on, and the forested shores of the lake aredo ed with homes and cabins. The park area is located in apeninsula on the northern shore of the lake, and includesa network of hiking trails as well as a full service marinawith boat rentals, bike rentals, and supplies/refreshmentsfor campers. Numerous cabins and campsites are availablefrom late May to September. The picnic shelters, shingpier and playgrounds are available year round. The historicowe ouse offers interac ve exhibits for the aspiringconserva onist, describing the ecology of the lake and thesurrounding areas.DIRECTIONS: From1, take exit 101 ( laytor ake) toState Park Road (Rte. 660). GatewoodParkGATEW OOD P ARK contains over 400 acres of mountainforests around the atewood Reservoir, nestled in themountains near the Town of Pulaski and surrounded bythe Jefferson Na onal Forest. RiverviewParkRIVERVIEW P ARK is a small park on the bank of the NewRiver on the west end of Radford. The park is less wellknown than Bisset Park and therefore uieter, crea ngan opportunity to spot o ers, muskrats and a variety ofbirds along the shore. The park includes soccer elds,a basketball court, a playground, a picnic shelter, and aboat launch.Riverview is agreat loca on toen oy the NewRiver‘watertrail.’ The parkhas easy accessto the river to‘put in’ canoes,kayaks,innertubes, etc., andoat down theriver to D udley’sanding in BissetPark.
