December 1, 2011To My Brothers of the 131 Lodges of the MostWorshipful Grand Lodge of Colorado, A.F. & A.M.Re: 150th Anniversary of the FIRST ANNUALCOMMUNICATIONOF THE GRAND LODGE OFCOLORADO, DECEMBER 10, 1861, A.L. 5861On August 2, 1861, the Grand Lodge of Colorado was regularlyconstituted in Golden City, Territory of Colorado. On August 3, 1861, theGrand Lodge appointed a committee to draft and procure the passage of asuitable act of incorporation for the Grand Lodge at the ensuing session ofthe General Assembly of Colorado. On the same date, the Grand Lodgedecided that it would thereafter be known by the name and style of theMost Ancient and Honorable Fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons ofColorado. Thereafter House Bill No.185, a bill for an Act to incorporate theGrand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons was presented, considered andpassed by the House of Representatives after three readings. On November7, 1861, the Executive Department, Colorado Territory read, in part, aportion of the message from then Governor, William Gilpin, of the ColoradoTerritory to the 1st Speaker of the House, C.F. Holly, a Colorado Mason, asfollows: " I have approved and signed acts entitled ". An act toincorporate the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Colorado".On December 10, 2011, we will be celebrating our 150th Anniversaryof our 1st Annual Communication. During the four short months betweenAugust 2, 1861 when the Grand Lodge of Colorado was formed and our 1stAnnual Communication on December 10, 1861, the Territory of Coloradowas coming into existence, the Civil War was underway, people were

coming to Colorado from all over the United States, gold and silver hadbeen discovered in the Territory of Colorado, the Colorado militia wasformed and the Native Americans of the Colorado Territory were trying toco-exist with their new neighbors. Our 1st Annual Communication was an occasion of greatsignificance to all of us. It is my hope that each of our current 9,865members rededicates themselves to the great principals of our MasonicFraternity and to honor those who firmly established those principals in thepioneer gold mining camps at the very beginning of the history of ourState. We should be proud of our great Masonic Heritage and tradition inthis glorious State of Colorado --------- proud to know that in every crudemining camp in our mountains, Masons met together to build theircommunities upon the great truth of Masonry - proud to know that in thelawless and wild frontier the leavening influence of Masonry and theservices of dedicated and earnest Masonic Leaders helped to lay thecornerstones of freedom, law and order on which our State wasestablished.Brethren, we have a thrilling and inspiring history. Masonry is agreat, vigorous and vital force in Colorado, with an unparalleled record ofachievements. I hope that our membership takes advantage of the writtenproceedings of our 1st Annual Communication to honor and respect thegreat Masons of Colorado -- not only those who created our Grand Lodge150 years ago. Please consider using the attached materials for aneducational opportunity for Masonic Education prior to our upcomingannual Communication in January.Fraternally and Most Cordially Yours,John V. Egan, IIIGrand Master, 2011Sesquicentennial Anniversary ofThe Most Worshipful Grand Lodge ofAncient Free and Accepted Masons of Colorado

ANNUAL ADDRESS:To the Most Worshipful, the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and AcceptedMason:BRETHREN: - But few things have occurred during our short existencewhich require to be noticed in my annual communication to you.Two dispensations have been granted by me for new Lodges, one to Bro.Allyn Weston and others, at Central City, whose petition came recommended byGolden City Lodge No. 1.The other was from Bro. Blake, and the members of the old AurariaLodge, U.D. from the Grand Lodge of Kansas, who in the true spirit of fraternalbrotherhood, surrendered their authority to the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge ofKansas, and asked for a dispensation from your jurisdiction until your presentmeeting. Both of the Lodges, it is to be presumed, will be here with their work andBy-Laws for your inspection, and asking for charters, which I recommend begranted to them.I learn that there has been a Lodge chartered at Nevada City by our sister, the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Kansas. This would seem to be an anomaly in Masonry, but when it is known thatthe Grand Lodge of Kansas were not advised of our existence as a grand body, the matter is sufficiently explained.I will here state, however, that at an early day after the adjournment of theGrand Lodge at Golden City, I wrote to Grand Master Fairchild at Atchison,Kansas.I presume that he either did not receive my letter, or inadvertentlyneglected to lay the matter before the Grand Lodge of Kansas, for I cannotbelieve that the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Kansas, (or any other GrandLodge of Masons,) would, knowing of our existence, interfere in our jurisdiction;such a course would be subversive of every principle held sacred by Masonry, and destructive of the “peace and harmony” which is the “strength and support ofall institutions, especially this of ours.”The brethren of Nevada Lodge will, in all probability, be here to surrendertheir charter from the Grand Lodge of Kansas, and to take one from this GrandLodge. If so, I would most cordially recommend that you grant their request.I may add in this connection that brethren from Canon City have sent apetition, which is in my hands, praying for a dispensation to meet and work as alegal Lodge, and your attention is respectfully called to their petition.A liberal charter for our Grand Lodge was passed by the recent session ofour Territorial Legislature, and all that we have to do is henceforth to betemperate, discreet, vigilant, aye, jealous and zealous for the honor andreputation of the craft, guarding well the door of admission to her sacred temples,to which, if we do, we have a future as bright in prospect as it will be glorious inreality.

Allow me to say, brethren, such are my engagements that I do not believeit best, if it were your choice, to re-elect me to the position I now hold.Yet, in all time to come, I am with you in every good work, and I shall not, amid the vicissitudes of life, permit myself to forget the honor conferred upon meby being made the first Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Colorado.Brethren, accept my thanks for that uniform courtesy and kindness which Ihave received at the hands of all during my brief term of office, and to you Iwould say, look to the angel Masonry, its unerring finger will point you steadily tothe path of brotherly love, relief and truth.J.M.
