1.1MUELLER DRILLING ANDTAPPING MACHINESIn 1871, Hieronymus Mueller, founder of theMUELLER Co., invented and patented the firstmachine for drilling, tapping and insertingcorporation stops in mains under pressure. This invention revolutionized the method of makingmain to service connections under pressure and alsoestablished what has proven to be the mostsuccessful principle for machines of this type. ThisRev. 4-99has been proven by the fact that MUELLER machines are the accepted standard by most water companies, plumbers, and plumbing contractors.MUELLER Co. has taken the original tapping machine features and refined, expanded andincorporated them into additional machines for otherconditions and purposes. MUELLER Co. offers themost complete line of time proven drilling and tapping machines available. The MUELLER method of making a main to service connection using the MUELLER B-101 Drillingand Tapping Machine.oMUELLER drillingand tapping machinedrills and taps a hole in apressurized main withoutallowing water to escape.oThe drilling and tapping toolis extracted and a corporation stop is attached to theboring bar for insertion intothe main.oThe closed corporationstop is now installed, ready for the servicepipe to be connected.oThe connection isnow complete and thecorporation stop isopened.Drilling and tapping machine selection guideMachineDescriptionB-101A-3“J”Tapping machineCorporation Pipe plugstop capacity capacityMaximumpressure1/2" - 1"90 psig (621 kPa)250 psig(1724kPa)*1/2" - 2-1/2"Operation Recommended usesHand or power1" - 2"1" - 2-1/2"90 psig (621 kPa)200 psig (1379 kPa)*1/2" - 2"1/4" - 2"Dry or open mains only Hand*Maximum pressure using the optional power clevis.Drilling and tapping pressurized mainsand inserting corporation stops or pipeplugs without loss of water.Drilling and tapping dry or open mains.

1.2MUELLER DRILLINGAND TAPPING MACHINESRev. 8-04 Shaded area indicates changeMUELLER B-101 Machine featuresoANTI-FRICTION THRUSTCOLLAR - fluorocarbon impregnated steel bearing sealedin a steel case - no lubricationrequired.RATCHET HANDLE - fully enclosedratchet; permanently lubricated; quickreverse button.oFEED NUT AND YOKE - springdetents hold feed yoke securely inplace around boring bar . Squareshank on feed yoke fits power operator for automatic feed.oO-RING SEALS - seal offspecial cavity inside feedsleeve to provide oil reservoir for lubricating boringbar and O-rings; boring barwiper ring protects bottomO-ring.oFEED SLEEVE AND CAP - acmethreads require only 2-1/2 turnsto remove sleeve and cap for fastdisassembly; long bearing surfacesprovide exceptional boring bar rigidity; positive metal-to-metal contactwith upper barrel maintains boringbar alignment; O-ring seals.oEASILY MAINTAINEDBY-PASS VALVE - usesO-ring valve technology forbetter sealing.oBORING BAR - chromeplated to resist corrosion;helps assure long life ofO-ring seals.oCHIP FLUSHING VALVE- provides means to continuallyflush pipe chips and other piperesidue from main during drilling and tapping operations onall kinds of pipe; threaded outletpermits hose to be attached soflushed water can be kept out ofditch.ooLOCKING MECHANISM - securesthe boring bar to the feed yoke toprevent the drill from spiraling intothe pipe before the hole is completelydrilled. Helps prevent tool breakage.OFFSET BODY - reducescollection of chips aroundflop valve when machineis in horizontal or inclinedposition; increased diametergives adequate clearance forinserting greater variety ofstops and valves.ooTOOL HOLDING METHOD - transmitsforce evenly through drive pins on toolto drill and tap pipe. Retaining screwholds tool tightly in boring bar socket forprecise alignment of tool and boring bar.Convenient knock-out pin allows easytool removal.oFLOP VALVE - seats withpressure , self-aligning,molded neoprene washer;lever handle has positivelock in open or closedposition, position indicator included; O-ring onflop valve stem eliminatespacking adjustment.
