How To Use This Prayer GuideWhere there is no vision/revelation, the people perish/are unrestrained (Pr 29:18). Imagine youare crossing a deep ravine on a narrow footbridge that has no restraints or handrails. Strongwinds are gusting making it very difficult to keep your balance. One misstep, one moment of lostbalance, and you will fall to your death! This is what our spiritual walk is like without vision. Ifwe lack vision or revelation, we have no restraint to keep us from falling off, no handrail tosteady us and guide our steps.Vision must be constantly maintained. One day we may be focused on the end of the bridge, orthe finish line and make great progress. But it is amazing how prone we are to losing focus andallowing our vision to fade. Jesus knew this and that is why he not only taught his disciples thevision in plain statements and in many parables and examples, but He also taught them to “praythe vision.” He gave them a vision for the appearing of the Kingdom of God—AND—He taughtthem to pray that vision as well saying: “Pray like this: ‘Thy kingdom come.’” Vision guides ourprayers and praying the vision maintains our vision and facilitates it realization. This is the ideabehind the Pray The Vision prayer guide.Part 1. The Right Frame of Mind for PrayerIt is recommended to read this section before beginning to pray the guide to establish the rightframe of mind. The enemy would like to discourage us regarding prayer, but we should neverunderestimate the power of our prayers, even if we feel we are simply going through the motions.Note:This guide is part of a larger more extensive curriculum (also found atKingdomCore.org) which will further establish kingdom vision.Part 2. Guides for Praying the Word of GodWe all know that prayer is important, but when is comes to actually praying, we can sometimesfind ourselves without direction or grasping for prayers to pray. This is sometimes results inthose awkward periods of silence, or long rambling prayers that go on and on. This is whereusing a Pray the Vision prayer guide in needed. It is based on praying the scriptures, keeps theprayers involved and moving, provides direction and focused content. This prayer guide can be used in group settings or as a tool for personal prayer, but in the groupsetting, having a general format is even more important. The format does not provide pre-writtenprayers, which can hinder being led by the Spirit, it simply suggests what to pray for based on thecontent of a passage of scripture. The scripture selections do not cover every topic, but provide aspark that ignites a fire of prayer that will burn beyond the content provided. In a small group, it suggested that the leader go from person to person asking them to read apassage and pray. A brief suggestion is offered after each scripture passage to kick start theprayers. Others should be encouraged to to chime after each scripture reading (as time allows)Page 4Kingdom Core Prayer Guide / www.KingdomCore.orgBack to Table of Contents

before moving to the next reading. This approach to prayer, often called “Praying the Bible,”This method has the great advantage of keeping prayers on track and according to the will ofGod, which is explained further in Preparing for Action in Prayer section. The length of the prayer meeting is also important. You may enjoy praying for 2 hours straight, but the many people lose focus much sooner. The result of going too long is usually poorparticipation. Consider keeping meetings 30-45 minutes in length, especially if they are over thephone or internet. All you have to do is note your ending place in the guide and pick up therenext time. There will usually be a convenient break point for keeping the prayer time within areasonable time period. If you want to go longer, you can always do so individually.A general Prayer Meeting Format is provided at the end of this document for those who wish touse it.Navigating the DocumentThere are two guides in this section. The first one is titled Praying the Vision. This guide isbased on the definition of vision, mission, strategy, purpose, and goals. These five definitions arealso used to form a concise Vision Statement. The second guide is Praying The Lord’s Prayer. It is a break down of Matthew 6:10-13 andshows how this prayer model given by Jesus revolves around kingdom vision. It is amazing howmeaningful the Lord’s Prayer becomes once we grasp the vision and gain understanding ofmission, strategy, purpose, and goals. It is suggested to use this prayer guide from an Internet connected device such as a computer, tablet or smart phone by going to KingdomCore.org and choosing “Praying The Vision” fromthe menu. This insures that you are using the latest version and will be on the same page withothers. The document is in PDF format and the Table of Contents has hyperlinks (in blue) which allowsyou to jump to various points in the document quickly. There is also a “Back to Contents” link atthe bottom of each page which allows you to instantly jump back to the Table of Contents fromany place in the document. The document can be downloaded and saved on your device for use offline as well and thehyperlinks will also work. Printing the document is also an option but the hyperlinks won’t work,it cannot be updated, and it is requires a lot of paper.Page 5Kingdom Core Prayer Guide / www.KingdomCore.orgBack to Table of Contents

Section 1Preparing for Action in PrayerIn this section, we will establish the right frame of mind for prayer by looking at:1)A Basic Definition of Prayer2)The Motivation and Content of Our Prayers3)Five Things That Happen When We Pray the VisionBeing in the right frame of mind effects just about anything we do. This is certainly true when itcomes to prayer. Peter exhorts us to prepare our minds for action with the appearing of Jesus(and His kingdom) in view.1 Peter 1:13 (NASB)13Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completelyon the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.Prayer DefinedIn the most basic sense, prayer is talking to God. It includes at least three things.1.Worship and adoration2.Coming to God through confessions of faith and repentance from sin3.Seeking the powers of heaven to accomplish the goals and purposes of God onearth. This would include petitions and declarative statements anddeclarations/decrees.Motivation, Content, and ActivationHave you ever asked yourself these two questions?1) What motivates me to pray?2) What determines the content of my prayers?Motivation for PrayerWhen it comes to what motivates us to pray, there are many answers. When we feel in danger,we pray for protection. When we lack money, we pray for financial help. When we consider thehorrendous nature of abortion, we pray for abortion to end. When we feel sick, we pray for healthand healing. When our hearts break over lost the lost, we pray for their salvation. The list of feltneeds is endless. Habit, discipline, and sense of duty also play a part but I think it is safe to saythat the vast majority of us are motivated by felt needs. God cares about our felt needs. We canand should pray regarding such things. If circumstances drive us to God in prayer, that is a goodthing. But felt needs must not be our primary motivator for prayer, because our feelings candeceive us and lead us astray.Jesus responded to felt needs, but He was primarily motivated by vision. Hebrews 12:1 speaks ofHis forward looking vision when it tells us that Jesus endured the cross because of the joy thatPage 6Kingdom Core Prayer Guide / www.KingdomCore.orgBack to Table of Contents

was before Him. His work on the cross was a difficult part of His mission, but He endured itbecause He had vision, He was able to look past the present and see the fulfillment of the vision.Likewise, vision should be the primary motivation for our prayers. Again, Jesus imparted avision of the coming Kingdom to the disciples and then He taught them to pray the vision: “ThyKingdom Come.”Content of PrayerVision should not only be our primary motivation for prayer, but it should guide the content ofour prayers as well. Vision helps us to know how to pray and what to pray for. If Jesus hadallowed felt need to determine the content of His prayers, He would have prayed for deliverancefrom the cross. But instead He prayed for the will of God to be done, not his own (felt need).James warns about this when he says: “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, thatyou may spend it on your pleasures” (James 4:3). If we look to our felt needs to shape ourprayers, there is a good chance we will pray wrongly. What we think should be done about ourfelt needs, and what God thinks, may not be the same. Just because we feel a need to pray doesnot automatically mean we know how to pray. We might know the will of God and we might not.I heard it said many years ago, “If you know His word, you will know His will.” God’s word isHis will. To avoid praying amiss, we should pray His Word. Therefore, because the word of Godreveals the will of God, we must allow the word of God to shape our prayers and determine whatwe pray and how we pray. This is why the Pray the Vision Prayer Guide is built around prayingthe Scriptures.Spoken WordsPrayer according to God’s word accesses God’s power for God’s plan. Prayer based on His wordis powerful, because we know that His word is according to His will. We acknowledge our needfor God’s help and activate His power to accomplish our mission by putting words into thespiritual atmosphere. Spoken Prayers According to God’s Will Activate the Word1 John 5:14-15 (NKJV)14Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anythingaccording to His will, He hears us.15And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have thepetitions that we have asked of Him.Five Things that Happen When We Pray the VisionThis prayer guide is written in obedience to Habakkuk 2:2 which says: “Write the vision andmake it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it.” Vision enables us to run or make hastetoward our goals and the coming of that day (see 1 Peter 3:12) . Writing the vision down gives usthe ability go back and read it over and over, stay focused, and keep on running. Then we are ableto pray the vision, which not only deepens and clarifies our understanding of the vision, but setsthings into motion to accomplish the mission. Below are five things (some mentioned above) thathappen when we pray the vision.Page 7Kingdom Core Prayer Guide / www.KingdomCore.orgBack to Table of Contents

We Show Up for WorkPrayer need not be hard work, but it is work nonetheless. Words describing God’s desiredoutcome need to be spoken and put into the spiritual atmosphere. For this reason, prayer is notbased on feeling or emotion, but on vision, purpose and responsibility. Prayer must be seen aspart of our job, and like any job, we must show up for work if we expect to get paid. The Bibleputs it this way: “You do not have because you do not ask” (James 4:2).We Stay FocusedVision is essential. Jesus imparted a vision for the kingdom to His disciples and then taught themto pray for that vision in a model prayer which we generally refer to as The Lord’s Prayer: “Thykingdom come.” The principle here is that praying the vision keeps us focused on our purposeand keeps our prayers on track. It is a rare person who stays focused without a model or guide tofollow. This is the idea behind the Pray The Vision prayer guide. We Are Acting as God’s Agents on EarthThe heavens belong to the Lord, but the earth He has given to the sons of men (Ps 115:16).Therefore, praying in agreement with God’s will opens the legal channels for heavens power tomanifest on earth. This is why Jesus said, “.if two of you agree on earth concerning anythingthat they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven” (Matt 18:19).We Are Activating AngelsConsider these verses:Hebrews 1:13-14 (KJV)13But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thineenemies thy footstool?14Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs ofsalvation?Psalm 103:20 (NKJV)20Bless the LORD, you His angels, Who excel in strength, who do His word, Heeding thevoice of His word. The angels are workers on our behalf. They hear us and take action when we speak according toGod’s Word. Since angels are not omniscient and cannot read our minds, and since they heed thevoice of His word, our prayers should be should be 1) Verbalized, and 2) According to God’swill. As Peter wrote: “If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God.” (1 Peter 4:11).Unity HappensPage 8Kingdom Core Prayer Guide / www.KingdomCore.orgBack to Table of Contents

It has been said that those who pray together stay together. Those who use this prayer guide willfind themselves melding together into a powerful unified force for kingdom preparation. If wepray according to different visions, our impact is spread out and is not as effective at penetratingthe darkness. But when we are praying according to the same vision, we achieve greater“spiritual mass” and the power to pierce the darkness and destroy evil.Page 9Kingdom Core Prayer Guide / www.KingdomCore.orgBack to Table of Contents

Section 2Vision StatementEstablishing Unity With A Vision StatementWe Need The Big PictureUnity is a good thing, but it is a poor cause. But please don't take that to mean that we should notpursue unity. Unity IS a Good Thing. The point is this: Unity forms around a cause, it is not“the” cause. Our cause is the Kingdom. The return of the King and the manifest Kingdom ofGod ruling planet earth is The Vision. One of the struggles I have had in four decades of ministry is how to balance my personal calling,or “favorite” areas of ministry, with those whose callings are equally important, but quitedifferent. We know that God wants us to have common vision and walk in unity. Yet thereseems to be no end to the different visions that people have, and as someone once said, “twovisions is di-vision.”An example of this is seen in Matthew 16:21-23, where Jesus began to explain that He mustsuffer, be killed, and rise on the third day. Peter rebuked Jesus saying, “Far be it from You Lord;this shall not happen to you!” It was at this point that Jesus said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men”Jesus had a clear vision of His mission, something Peter had not yet seen. Peter’s problem washis lack of vision. He could not see the bigger picture. As a result, Peter had developed adifferent vision and a different time line of what Jesus was supposed to do. Peter’s vision wasbased on human interests and when Jesus provide correction, it was difficult for him to hear. The same is true today. There is a wide range of “mindsets” or visions regarding what God’svision and mission is. And if we don’t have the big picture we will very likely, as Peter did, elevate our own ideas in a way that opposes God’s strategy. This is a problem. We can begin tosolve this problem by defining five key words, some of which are often used synonymous withthe word “vision” but are actually different.Five Key WordsTo have unity, we must have common vision and to have common vision we must speak thesame language. To put it another way, we must define key words the same way otherwise clearcommunication cannot take place. A definition of five key words is provided below. Thesewords may have broader definitions than what is provided here, but we will define them as itPage 10Kingdom Core Prayer Guide / www.KingdomCore.orgBack to Table of Contents

relates to working together with unity. Defining these will lay the foundation for understanding1) Where we are we going, 2) What we are doing, 3) How to accomplish the mission, 4) Whowe are and why we are called, and 5) What the steps are to move forward. These relate to thisprayer guide, which has five parts (one for each of these five words). A definition of each word isprovided at the beginning of each part, however a basic definition of each one is provided below. The five key words are: 1) vision, 2) mission, 3) strategy, 4) purpose, and 5) goals.Basic DefinitionsVision: the appearing of God’s kingdom on earth.Vision is the ability to look forward and see or comprehend the finish line. It is where weare going.Mission: to prepare the way for the Kingdom of God.A mission is an assignment

The second guide is Praying The Lord’s Prayer. It is a break down of Matthew 6:10-13 and shows how this prayer model given by Jesus revolves around kingdom vision. It is amazing how meaningful the Lord’s Prayer becomes once we grasp the vision and gain understanding of mission, strategy, purpose, and goals.
