A MESSAGE FROMthe Rt. Rev. Samuel RodmanThe year 2020 hasshown us, in dramaticways, how dependentwe are on God and oneach other. BuildingBeloved Communityas faithful disciples ofJesus has never beenmore important thanit is right now. Thisbooklet is intended asa devotional, a tool foryou to use in cultivating habits of grace asyou go deeper in yourown journey, even as we turn the corner into 2021.Becoming Beloved Community is at the heart of what itmeans to follow Jesus as disciples and also as apostles. We dothis in a variety of ways, but we begin with prayer. This booklet is designed to be used as part of your daily prayer, and itcan also be used in worship in your congregation. It can be ablessing to you and an invitation to others with whom you maychoose to share it.2

Find a time that works for you to incorporate the readingfrom scripture found here into your life of prayer. Find a wayto incorporate the prayers for individuals and communities intoyour liturgy on a regular basis. Use this resource to propel you,in your journey of faith, to share the hope and joy of the gospel,to share your own stories of faith with a neighbor or friend. Letthis be a gift of grace as you enter more deeply into the invitation to become Beloved Community. The ways we pray together are part of our witness thatGod’s love is alive and at work in the world as well as theChurch. The habit of prayer deepens our love for one anotherand is at the heart of our apostolic call to share God’s love andto build up one another. This is how building Beloved Community begins. The ways we move from prayer into conversationand connection with our neighbors are gifts of grace tothe world.May this resource be a blessing to you and your congregation, especially in these challenging times, as we live intothe call and promise of building and growing God’s BelovedCommunity.3

AN INTRODUCTION TOGospel-Based DiscipleshipWhat is Gospel-Based Discipleship (GBD)?Gospel-Based Discipleship is an encounter with the Gospel that isdesigned to engage people with the Gospel. Some Ways to BeginThere are many ways to read, study and meditate on passages ofScripture. You should use any approach that helps you engage theGospel. I encourage you to incorporate this into other ways of dailydevotions you may already use. Here is just one method of reflecting onthe Gospel.Gospel ReflectionBegin with prayer.1. Read the Gospel lesson for the day. What word(s), idea(s) or sentence(s) stand out to you?2. Re-read the Gospel (maybe in another translation if available). What is Jesus (the Gospel) saying to you?3. Re-read the Gospel. What is Jesus (the Gospel) calling you to do?Close with prayer. In GBD, there are no right or wrong answers. The engagement is with the Gospel, not with a leader or the search forcorrect answers. Experienced leaders are not required, and leadershipshould rotate.Groups and individuals using GBD regularly should expect to begin tosee their call to mission differently. Some congregations use GBD as away to focus on what God is calling them to do in their communities.- From the Most Rev. Michael CurryPresiding Bishop, The Episcopal Church4

SOME PRAYERS FOR USE WITHGospel-Based DiscipleshipGod of peace, let us your people know, that at the heart of turbulencethere is an inner calm that comes from faith in you. Keep us from beingcontent with things as they are, that from this central peace there maycome a creative compassion, a thirst for justice, and a willingness to giveof ourselves in the Spirit of Christ. Amen.- A New Zealand Prayer BookBlessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digestthem, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope ofeverlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; wholives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.Amen.- The Book of Common PrayerO God, who has taught us that your Word is a lantern to our feet and alight to our path: Grant that as this community devoutly reads the HolyScriptures, we may realize our Fellowship with one another in you, andmay learn thereby to know you more fully, to love you more truly, andto follow more faithfully in the steps of your Son Jesus Christ; who livesand reigns with you and Holy Spirit, one God blessed for evermore.Amen.- The Wolf Shall Dwell with The Lamb by Eric H. F. LawMost gracious and loving God:Strengthen the hearts of your people in this Diocese,That loving you with our whole heart,And loving our neighbor as ourselves,We might, in the power of the Spirit,Obey the call of Jesus,To go into our world as disciples,Making disciples,And making a difference,Through your saving love. Amen.- The Mission Prayer of the Diocese of North Carolina5

THE BAPTISMAL COVENANTI believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.He was conceived by the power of the Holy SpiritAnd was born of the Virgin Mary.He suffered under Pontius Pilate,Was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead.On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven,And is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge both the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit,The holy catholic Church,The communion of saints,The forgiveness of sins,The resurrection of the body,And the life everlasting. Amen. Will you continue in the Apostles’ teaching and fellowship,in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?- The Book of Common Prayer, Holy Baptism, pages 304-3056
