The UniversityThe University of Southern Maine, the state’s only public comprehensive university, offers a rich variety of academicopportunities. It prepares students to play vital roles in the overall growth and improvement of the economic, civic, social, andcultural fabric of central and southern Maine while providing engaged learning opportunities both inside and outside theclassroom.USM comprises five academic units: three newly reorganized colleges (one housing USM’s nursing and health professionsprograms as well as its science, technology, engineering, and mathematics programs; one focused on communication, thehumanities, and the arts; and another housing professional programs in public service, business, social work, and graduateeducation); Lewiston-Auburn College; and the University of Maine School of Law. USM’s faculty have a passion forcommunicating the excitement of learning and the joy of discovery. These women and men represent a wide range ofknowledge and expertise; among them are Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellows, advisors to state and local governments, andauthors of national note from a range of academic disciplines.USM’s locations in central and southern Maine, viewed nationally as among the most livable regions in the country, offer arange of educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities. The student body is the most diverse in Maine—approximatelyhalf are full-time students, 59 percent are women, and the average age of an undergraduate is 28 years. USM offers over 50 baccalaureate degree programs as well as numerous minors and concentrationsthat allow students valuable opportunities to shape their undergraduate careers in ways most meaningful to them. The Center for Continuing Education and some of the USM schools and colleges offer a variety of noncreditprograms. USM further addresses the broad range of student interests with its Weekend College, WinterSession, Summer Session, National Student Exchange Program, and Early Studies program for high school juniors and seniors.The University of Southern Maine is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The nursingprograms are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and the athletic training program isaccredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. The School of Education is accreditedby the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. The School of Business is accredited by AACSBInternational—the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Several departments within USM’s four collegesare accredited through specialized agencies. Undergraduate AdmissionThe University of Southern Maine is an academic community that welcomes applications for admission from qualifiedwomen and men with various backgrounds and interests regardless of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, nationalorigin or citizenship status, age, physical or mental disability, or veteran status. The University seeks candidates whoseacademic achievement and motivation indicate potential for success in an undergraduate program.The Office of Undergraduate Admission invites prospective students to visit the campus to discuss their educationalinterests. The Office will provide information about academic programs, discuss admission requirements and procedures, andarrange personal interviews and campus tours. Students who are home educated/home schooled should contact theOffice of Undergraduate Admission for information regarding the alternate documentation required for admission. Althoughsecondary school preparation may vary, please find below the minimum college preparatory subjects required for regularadmission to the University. In addition to these, further requirements may be imposed by individual University schools andcolleges.General subject minimum requirements (University-wide)English4 unitsMathematics3 units (Algebra I, II, and Geometry)Science2 units (with laboratory)History/Social Science 2 unitsHighly Recommended College Preparatory CoursesWhile minimal admission requirements are listed as 4 units English, 3 units mathematics (Algebra I and II and Geometry), 2units of laboratory science, and 2 units of history/social studies, an optimal college preparatory course of study extends beyondthese minimum requirements. Students who do best in college and graduate on time have the following high school course ofstudy:1. Four years of English in courses that present a variety of readings (fiction, non-fiction, essays, memoirs, journalism) andemphasize expository and analytic writing about texts.2. At least three years of laboratory science that include the study of biology, chemistry, and physics, offered as separatecourses or as an integrated core. Science courses should include writing technical reports and quantitative representationsand analyses of data as well as the traditional course content.3. Four years of math that include Algebra I and II and Geometry; a college preparatory math course during the senior year.4. Three years of history and social science that include reading primary as well as secondary texts, writing analytic andexpository essays, and using quantitative social science data, in addition to the traditional course content.5. Two years of study of one language other than English.Applicants to the Women and Gender Studies program must also have:Women and Gender Studies candidates must have two units of one foreign language. American Sign Language (ASL) maybe substituted for this.Applicants to the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences must also have:Candidates must have two units of one foreign language (ASL may be substituted for this). Foreign language candidatesmust have three units of one foreign language. Note: For specific admission requirements for the degree programs in music,please refer to the School of Music section of the catalog.Applicants to the College of Management and Human ServiceBusiness candidates must have four units of mathematics exceeding Algebra II. Social Work candidates must have 2 unitsof one foreign language (ASL may be substituted for this).Applicants to the College of Science, Technology, and HealthEngineering candidates must have laboratory chemistry and physics, and four units of mathematics exceeding Algebra II(Trigonometry recommended). Computer science and mathematics candidates must have four units of mathematics exceedingAlgebra II. Science candidates must have three units of laboratory science. Linguistics and psychology candidates must havetwo units of one foreign language (ASL may be substituted for this). Nursing, athletic training, exercise physiology, healthfitness, and health sciences candidates must have laboratory biology and chemistry. In addition, nursing candidates must alsosatisfy specific academic standards in order to qualify for the clinical portion of the degree program. Admission Procedures, PoliciesAdmission ApplicationsAll applicants for admission are reviewed on a case-by-case basis; because admission to the University is selective, theacademic profile required for acceptance may vary from one semester to the next. Please find below the guidelines andprocedures for applying to the University for undergraduate admission.All applicants for undergraduate admission are encouraged to apply online at www.usm.maine.edu/admit.All students whose native language is not English should submit official results of the Test of English as a ForeignLanguage (TOEFL) or the English Language Testing System (IELTS).Secondary School Applicants Secondary school students are required to submit the following to the Office ofUndergraduate Admission:1. A completed University of Maine System application accompanied by the nonrefundable 40 application fee. TheCommon Application is also accepted.2. Official copies of all secondary and post-secondary school transcripts.3. Official SAT or ACT test results.*4. Letter of recommendation from a guidance or college counselor.*5. Completed personal statement.*Transfer and Adult Applicants Students who have been out of high school for three or more years or have earned 30 ormore college credits at the time of application are not required to submit SAT or ACT test results. Although SAT or ACTscores are not required for admission of transfer and adult candidates, they may be submitted for placement purposes as suchscores (if not more than five years old) may be used to declare college readiness. Transfer and adult applicants are not requiredto submit a guidance/college counselor recommendation.International Applicants Applicants whose native languages are not English are required to submit scores of the Test ofEnglish as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the English Language Testing System (IELTS), unless applying for the IntensiveEnglish Language Program with Conditions (please see “Admission Decisions,” below). Although USM encouragesinternational student applicants to submit SAT or ACT test results, these standardized tests are not required for admission. Dueto limitations on available financial aid, applications are encouraged only from international students who are able to fund theireducational expenses fully from their own resources. To certify this, a Declaration of Finances statement must be filed as partof the application process. This form must be fully documented and certified and should accompany the completed application.Early Admission Applicants Students who have completed their junior year of high school may apply for consideration ofadmission (as a non-matriculated student) under the Early Admission Program. Undergraduate Admission will consider highachieving students who display both the intellectual ability and the social maturity to succeed in a university course of study.To be eligible for admission, candidates must have completed a minimum of three years of college preparatory subjects inhigh school according to the general University admission requirements, and submit SAT or ACT test results.Interested applicants will be required to submit the University of Maine System application in addition to an EarlyAdmission Application. Early admission candidates may be required to have a personal interview with a member of theadmission staff. High school students who enter the University of Southern Maine prior to graduation from high school are noteligible for federally funded financial aid and may not participate in intercollegiate athletics.Early Admission applicants may apply for the fall semester only. Application forms must be submitted by April 15.Priority Dates and DeadlinesApplications are reviewed throughout the year on a rolling admission basis. However, the priority deadline for the fallsemester is February 15, and for the spring semester, December 1. All students applying for the fall semester who wish tobe considered for academic scholarships must have a completed application on file by February 1. Nursing applicantsare admitted for the fall semester only, with an application deadline of January 15 for transfer students and anapplication deadline of February 15 for first-year students. The 100 enrollment deposit deadline to reserve space for thefall semester is May 1.Although applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, as some degree programs admit only a limited number of students,applicants are urged to submit their credentials at their earliest possible convenience in order to receive consideration.Applications may be made to enter the University in the fall or spring semester only. Offers of admission may be revokedbecause of unsatisfactory performance in the final semester of high school or college.Admission to the University is offered for a specific semester. Anyone choosing to defer his or her offer of admission maydo so by submitting a written request prior to the start of the semester to the dean of Undergraduate Admission. Deferments aregranted for up to one year.Admission DecisionsThe University recognizes that its prospective students may come with differing academic backgrounds and/or withsignificant time having elapsed since completion of secondary school.
