Housing at UC DavisTypes of HousingThere are three types of housing available through UC Davis: residence halls, apartments, andcooperatives. There are key differences and eligibility requirements for each housing type, andsome properties specialize in specific student populations and their needs. LLCs are more than a placeto live—they provide students the opportunityto live in the same hall or on the same floorwith folks who have similar interests, creatingan educational community that supports itsresidents. There is something for everyonewhether identity, academic, career or interestbased; check out our website for the full list ofcommunities.In addition to the benefits that all studentsreceive from living in the residence halls, someLiving-Learning communities also have uniqueacademic or experiential learning opportunitiesrelated to the community’s theme. Room attributes they may consider areresidence hall area (see page 6), occupancy,gender and Living-Learning Community.In the residence hall application, students selectfrom available options within each room attributein their order of importance. Because not everyroom choice can be accommodated, StudentHousing determines assignments based uponstudents’ priorities and available space.10OccupancyGenderRequesting RoommatesOccupancy refers to the number of residentsin each room. Rooms are available in doubleoccupancy (two people total) and triple-occupancy(three people total). Most rooms are tripleoccupancy. Demand for double-occupancy roomsusually exceeds availability; demand for tripleoccupancy usually meets availability. Students areencouraged to form triple roommate groups sinceroom choices are not guaranteed. Occupancychoice affects the cost of housing.Gender refers to the preference to live in a singlegender community or a mixed-gender community.Most communities are mixed-gender. (Also seepage 3 for Gender Inclusivity.)Residence hall applicants may submit arequest to live with roommate(s) of theirchoice when applying for housing and,while not guaranteed, in most cases StudentHousing is able to honor the request.Living-Learning CommunityLiving-Learning Community refers to the ability toindicate a preference for a room that is locatedwithin a particular Living-Learning Community.11

Residential dent Housing provides a comprehensivein-house academic first-year experienceprogram for students living in the residencehalls and Student Housing Apartments(SHA). Professional staff work with academicdepartments to deliver academic programmingand support services developed specificallyfor first-year students. Emphasis is placed onensuring students have the resources andsupport to help them transition into a largeresearch university.Advising, Mentoring and TutoringLocated in each residence hall area, AcademicAdvising Centers provide convenient,personalized academic support for everyresidence hall and SHA student.Peer advisors from all four colleges—Letters andScience, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences,Biological Sciences, and Engineering—provideacademic planning assistance, major exploration,grading options, internship information andconnections to other campus resources.Student Housing and Dining Services offersa personalized one-on-one Peer Mentoringprogram aimed at helping first-year students withtheir academic transition. It is alsowhere students go to borrowtemporary keys if they getlocked out of their rooms.Computer Centersand SupportComputer Centers providecomplimentary access tocomputers, printers (up to250 free pages per quarter),scanners, Internet access, andspace for studying and holdingreview sessions. Desktopcomputers and terminals runWindows, Microsoft’s OfficeSuite, iTunes and Firefox. AComputer Center is available24/7 in all three residencehall areas with student staffavailable to provide computerand software support.13

Dining at UC DavisUC Davis offers one of the best programs incollegiate dining: exceptional recipes, local andsustainable food sources and options for a widerange of dietary needs, including vegetarian andvegan options.Eateries on campus range from the residence halldining commons to themed food trucks.The ASUCD Coffee House at the Memorial Unionbrews coffee and espresso and offers a variety ofsalads, baked goods, pizza and more. At The Silo,you’ll find Spokes Grill, The Gunrock, Silo Market,Peet’s Coffee and the food truck patio. At theActivities and Recreation Center, you can get snacksand drinks from Peet’s Coffee or the Pro Shop. TheBio Brew in the Sciences Lab Building is anotherspot for drinks and snacks. Scrubs Cafe, a deli, grilland specialty coffee vendor, is located in the HealthSciences District.14Dining With Student Housingand Dining ServicesDining commons (DCs) are Student Housing’sdining facilities located in each residence hallarea. DCs offer comfortable community dining withseasonal menus from themed platforms includinga soup and salad bar, grill, sautéed and pastaentrees, specialty entrées, open-fire brick pizza,Mongolian Wok and desserts. A wide range ofbeverages are also available, including Fair Tradecoffee and infused water and teas.A market is located in each residence hall area.Markets sell a variety of food, including housemade microwavable meals and a variety of saladsand sandwiches. Snacks, chips, candy bars, gum,ice cream and beverages, including water, tea, FairTrade coffee, smoothies and energy drinks arealso available. Markets are open from morning untillate evening every weekday and during eveningson the weekend.Meal PlansNutritionResidential Meal PlansEvery residence hall contract includes aresidential meal plan to be used in the diningcommons, and SHA contacts offer the option toadd a dining commons meal plan. Meal plansinclude 5-day unlimited or 7-day unlimited accessto the dining commons and 200 of Aggie Cashper quarter.Student Housing and Dining Services places anemphasis on planning and serving nutritious mealsusing food that is in season, local and sustainable,whenever possible. Vegetarian, vegan andgluten-free options are available at every meal,and entrées can be customized to meet specialnutritional needs or allergy limitations.Students may change their plan during scheduledmeal plan change periods in between eachacademic quarter.Aggie Block Meal PlansAll other UC Davis students may purchaseAggie Block meal plans to be used in the diningcommons. ApartmentsSolano Park tsSolano Park provides comfort, convenience,safety and affordability in a 15-acre, park-likesetting adjacent to the UC Davis Arboretum andwithin walking distance of the main campus libraryand downtown Davis.Managed by Student Housing, Solano Park offersboth one-bedroom [ 450 s.f.] and two-bedroom[ 600 s.f.] unfurnished apartments in two- andthree-story buildings. All units have a patio orbalcony, air-conditioning and a natural gas wallheater. Major appliances include refrigerator andelectric stove/oven. ApartmentsHousing in the City ofDavisInternational Studentsand ScholarsThe city of Davis offers a variety of housing,including apartments, rooms for rent in houses andcooperatives. In general, leases in Davis run fromSeptember 1 through August 31, and the renewalseason begins in January. Vacancy rates in Davisare typically very low, so it’s important to search forhousing early in the calendar year. You may have theopportunity to visit apartment complexes in Davisbefore choosing one, but if not, check Craigslist, thecampus and Davis newspapers for listings.Many international students attend UC Davis eachyear. Some international students come to studyfor a short amount of time—a few weeks, perhapsa quarter—while others enroll for a year or more,often pursuing a degree.
