LOUISIANARYRARestaurant Youth Registered ApprenticeshipRESTAURANT MANAGER APPRENTICELouisiana Restaurant Youth Registered Apprenticeship (RYRA)The LRAEF received 1.25 million of a 5 million grant awarded by the U.S. Dept. of Labor(DOL) to the NRA Educational Foundation. During the four year grant program, the LRAEFwill aid employers to identify an apprentice within their enterprise via one of two trainingtracks – Restaurant Manager or Line Cook. Additional tracks are in development and will beadded at a later date. The grant will help the NRAEF expand its Hospitality SectorRegistered Apprenticeship (HRSA) program, also funded by the DOL, and assist futuregenerations looking to make their mark as managers and chefs at restaurants andfoodservice establishments. In addition to expanding the HRSA program, the LRAEF willuse the funding to link HRSA to ProStart, which is currently offered in 57 high schoolswith more than 1,400 students in Louisiana; and Restaurant Ready, a program that trainsyoung adults, aged 16 to 24, who are unemployed or not enrolled in school, with theskills needed to begin restaurant industry careers. The primary purpose of the grant is tocreate a pipeline of ProStart and Restaurant Ready students into the apprenticeship program. The intended launch of the RYRA program aligned with the 2020 Louisiana ProStartInvitational and the LRAEF Serving the Future event. Unfortunately, those events werecanceled with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, thus the launch was postponed.Outreach and recruitment focused around twice monthly virtual employer acceleratorsessions, which yielded five employers who signed on aspartners, two of which aremulti-unit operators.During year one, an advisory board was formed and has been a catalyst to effectivelyincrease awareness of and participation in RYRA at both the employer and pre-apprenticelevel. It has been beneficial to have representatives from various sectors (employer, government, education, etc.) on the board, as each group has been able to make criticalconnections in their area of focus. For example, the apprenticeship coordinator from theLouisiana Workforce Commission connected us with a virtual job fair which sparked arelationship with Southern University in Shreveport. Their interest in becoming anapprenticeship partner led us to prioritize that region for future network-building activities. As another example, the Windsor Court Hotel connected us to another major hotel indowntown New Orleans. Delgado Community College has leveraged their experiencewith apprenticeships in the healthcare sector to make an introduction to the largestemployer in the state, Ochsner Health System. The LRAEF also partnered with the National Restaurant Association Education Foundationand the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation to connect Restaurant Ready Community BasedOrganizations such as Café Reconcile and Liberty’s Kitchen to the Apprenticeship Program.Registered Apprenticeship has long been recognized across a wide range of industries asan established best practice for workforce training and talent development. Since itsinception by NRAEF in 2016, the Restaurant Manager apprenticeship track has enjoyed amore than 80 percent completion rate, leading to an average annual salary of 52,000.Employers who adopt apprenticeship report increased employee satisfaction and reducedturnover, resulting in significant cost savings and a more highly skilled workforce.
